Gleen Close in Sunset Boulevard... Horribly miscast, didn't even know how to sing New Ways to Dream. Never understood the piece until I heard Patti sing it.

Is there some sort of Idina backlash going on? It seems like a few months ago she was a goddess, now it's "she's overrated", "she can't sing", "she's miscast."
Haylie Duff in Hairspray. Not horrible, but she dropped every joke line of Amber's and mugged way more than necessary.
Gary Beach in the revival of LA CAGE AUX FOLLES
Faith Prince in the revival of BELLS ARE RINGING
Deborah Gibson in revival tour of FUNNY GIRL

Vanessa Williams in Into the Woods
Granted I didn't SEE her in it, but I've heard her on the cast recording and her voice hurts me inside, especially on The Last Midnight. Maybe I was just spoiled by Bernadette.
Vanessa was good in it. I think Laura Benanti was miscast in the wedding singer, some may disagree. As much as i love Rebecca Lucker, she was not the best Maria. Hunter Foster i feel does not have a great voice for seymour in little shop. That may be because the guy who played him in the orginal had a terific voice. But either way i loved all of the shows!
I totally disagree with the original poster:
Idina's casting in Wicked was right on the money. If it wasn't (and the audience/critics agreed), she probably wouldn't have been asked to open the London Production. I am PRO-IDINA, especially after I saw the production of See What I Wann See.
Back to the topic at hand, I felt the only casting I hated to date was Constantine in The Wedding Singer. He really didn't fit and he seemed a bit off at times. Also - didn't care for the original Cathy (Lauren Kennedy) in THE LAST 5 YEARS. Sherie Rene Scott nailed the role.
SorryGrateful, For me Vanessa Williams is the witch. I think you had to have seen her, but I know a lot of people dissagree. She is just more dark and haunting then Peters was.
A bit OT, but not really:
I read a review that said Williams never really stepped outside of herself and her "diva" image and really allowed herself to get into the nastier/darker character of the Witch. However, on her recording of "Our Little World" she uses a very prevelant character voice, that is certainly not the light, pretty voice thats he usually uses, and it seemed more in "character" than any other witch I ever heard (not to discredit Peters at all). For those who have seen her performance, was it just that her performance wasn't very daring? Because on the recording it sounds like she took a lot of character risks.
I dunno, maybe it was just that one reviwer's opinion, but it just surprised me because the first thing I noted was how well she got into the character on the recording.

Well, I will grant you that. I just really don't like her sound on the revival recording.
jewishboy, did you see Peters in the role?
daphne in les miz 100%, she's a little too rocker for that
and though shoshana bean is very talented (awesome in hairspray) i don't think she was a great elphaba
and matt caplan. he's just kind of annoying-looking and not quite... soft enough for mark, i guess. i dunno. he bugs me.
and i agree with the duff in hairspray. really no need to put some half-celeb in a role that's so easily screwed up
Shoshana Bean was trying way to much to not sound like Idina. She tried so hard to sound different and, she sung the music way different than the way its supposed to and ended up sounding terrible.
i agree, becoz. my voice teacher is having me sing gravity, and i tried listening to sho just to get a different take on the song, and it's just a little ... uh... too different.

I found Shoshana Bean to be HORRIBLY miscast in "Wicked." I saw her before she added the God-awful riffs she introduced about half-way through her run, and very seriously considered leaving at intermission. I thought she over-acted, and next to JLT who was very internal, it looked bad (I actually thought during Morrible's speech before "Defying Gravity", that she was gonna vomit all over the set). She was incredibly nasal on anything with an "E", and she suffered from what I call "Darlene Love Syndrome" where she dropped character after EACH song to soak up the applause and mug.
However, that said, her performance of "As Long As You're Mine" was very enjoyable, and was probably her strongest moment in the show.
