I never understood why it was called Cats... Doesn't really tell you what the show is about.

Trekkie2,
I think they were gonna go with "Total Waste of Your Time and Money" but that wasn't reading well with sample demographics.

As much as I love it, I've never really loved the title of RENT all that much.
But, then..."Seasons of Love" seems too corny. "No Day But Today"?

Posted: 5/26/08 at 12:27amI think Grease should have been called High School Musical and Fame should have been called Dancin' on the Sidewalk and High School Musical should have been called sh*t.

Posted: 5/26/08 at 12:50amGypsy doesn't make sense as a title. Mama Rose or something would have been more appropriate, though perhaps less catchy.

Posted: 5/26/08 at 1:17amI would change the title of this thread to "Delete".

I really don't like "Spring Awakening" as a title.
Doesn't do anything for me...
Although I guess PUBERTY! THE MUSICAL! didn't really work...

Lol, blaxx.
Ljay, I'm quite glad they changed it to FOLLIES as well.

"Seasons of Love" seems corny and "No Day But Today" doesn't????
And the title of GYPSY is absolutely perfect for that show.

Posted: 5/26/08 at 1:28amI personally was a big fan of "Teen Angst! The Musical!" for Spring Awakening.

Thank you. We'll pass the message to Wedekind at our earliest convenience.
Pointless thread of the day.

Thanks for that, Trekkie; I laughed all manner of unpleasant bodily fluids onto my monitor because of you. :P

"Grease" got its title because the authors wanted to connect it somehow to "Hair" - they were both irrevernt musicals about young people.
"Grease" was a lot more irreverent in it's original incarnation (the version that played in a tiny theatre in Chicago). Now it's more irrelevant.

If you change the title of a musical, it ends up being an entirely different musical.
This is silly. Just deal with the titles.

There was quite a nice article by Neil LaBute in the Guardian the other week about titles. Bear with me a sec...

I rather liked it. ^_^

Posted: 5/26/08 at 7:13pmDidn't I read somewhere that Gypsy Rose Lee made it a condition that her name be the title? It was only after work began the focus of the story shifted to Rose.

Rent is called Rent because you don't own your life, you rent it, that's what I got from the song...
Spring Awakening is called Spring Awakening because it's the awakening to the Spring of your life, your body and life starts to truly come alive, leading to the summer and most fertile part of your life... that's why the show ends with "purple summer." Purple being a really rich, beautiful color and summer being a realy fruitful part of the year, if the metaphor for a person's life are the seasons.
I never really understood why 110 in the Shade was titled what it was... they never say those words in the show, and I get it that it's hot... but... it's not really metaphorical other than saying it's uncomfortable when your hiding from your real life? Which is a stretch... Audra nicknamed it "Lizzie's big day..." I don't know what I would re-title it...
Why was Grease called Grease? I'd probably re-title it "Rydell Days" or "The Show that will be re-vived to death."
