I was very intrigued by the "coming out" process Alfie Byrne ("man of no imprtance") goes through.
are there any other "coming out"s in musicals?
just a few gay characters that come to mind are:
those in La Cage,
Falsettoes,
Spring awakening,
a new brain,
Avenue Q
Cabaret, I suppose
EDIT: Cliff is the character- he (moreso in the movie than the show) blurtingly admits to Sally that he screwed a man.
Naked Boys Singing. I'm sure you could find something there.
Well it is talked about in A Chorus Line, although its hardly a focal point like, say, Falsettos.

AHAHAHHAHHA. I mean, I like it and all. But spare the hyperbole. :)
No one comes out in Spring Awakening.
Most definitely -- Chad coming out to "Ed" in ALL SHOOK UP!
BARE rocked! So glad I got to see it!
I don't think that either "La Cage Aux Folles" or "A New Brain" exactly fit into your category.
No one in "La Cage" "comes out" in the course of the show. Georges and Albin are both out gay men. I'd say that the problems come when they try to act straight.
And, I can't be one hundred percent sure about "A New Brain," having only listened to the album and never having read the script, but I don't think anyone "comes out" in that show either. I'm assuming that you don't know that the main character is gay until his boyfriend comes to visit him in the hospital.
True, but the importance of coming out is a major theme of La Cage.
His name is Lancelot! And, in tight pants a lot...
Wait! I never saw All Shook Up so does Chad really come out to Ed?

All Shook Up had a gay relationship?
I agree Spring Awakening doesn't really feel like someone "coming out" to me--it's more ambiguous.
Howabout Sondheim's Bounce?
Molina comes out in a sense in Kiss of the Spiderwoman but I think it's pretty obvious to everyone that he is from the start

Would Michael's kiss in Billy Elliot count as "coming out" ?
Having only seen the movie and not the musical, isn't there a coming out in "The Full Monty"?

Well, if you count Cheyenne Jackson falling in love with Jenn Gambatese only when she's dressed as a man, then yes.

Ah so it's the classical Shakespearian comedy definition of gay love :P
mattonstage -- yes, there is. Although I saw the show only once and don't even remember which character. I'm thinking it was the dude who ran into walls.
First one that comes to mind is Spamalot.
Also, in Altar Boyz, Mark comes 'out' as a Catholic...

No one comes out in A New Brain--they are known to be gay before the show. No one really comes out in Falsettos either--I guess Marvin sort of comes out in In Trousers.
There is the same character coming out in the musical of The Full Monty as in the movie, and they have a lovely duet in the mother's funeral scene.
There's also a coming out, albeit a minor one, in Urinetown.
Oh, and there's technically a coming out in The Wild Party, I think, too.

I thought in Wild Party it was more or less just taken for granted that everyone was "abisextrous"
i think you all are forgetting about avenue Q, duh.
you silly kids.
