I am not hard to please... but GODSPELL was awful.
I went with my 14 year old daughter and think she summed it up best when she said..
"It reminded me of a skit from girls camp."
I was really looking forward to this show... BIG DISAPPOINTMENT

Posted: 10/24/11 at 3:25pmI, for one, thought GODSPELL was an absolute blast. I typically don't like the show, but I hope to make it back to the city to see this production again sometime soon.

Posted: 10/24/11 at 3:32pmI was tempted too. If I were sitting on an aisle, I would have left during the first act. But morbid curiosity convinced me to stay and see the rest of this trainwreck. Godspell is one of my favorite shows, but this production is just dreadful.

Is this production really that bad?
Did the words "awful" and "dreadful" not give you a bit of a hint?

Posted: 10/24/11 at 4:33pmI believe the correct phrase would be, "Yes, it was that terrible for THEM." Which, of course, has no real bearing on how it was or wasn't for anyone else - or would be for you.

Posted: 10/24/11 at 5:05pmHahahahahaha, you guys just can't get enough! It's obvious with all of the talks about shills on the previous post about Godspell that there are people that jump on here and make up negative stuff about shows in general because of dumb reasons. Many of the people that get on these blogs are bitter ass kids who hate to see a production that they didn't get cast in,go down the drain. Nobody who has any real common sense, critics of papers included, could give two ****s about what u kids are on here talking about. Some of the best shows on Broadway right now have gotten the same if not worse comments. So give it a rest. The opinions on this blog are not the majority, they don't change the masses and the masses love the show. Stop trying to fight it and go find your place in the world where u can make a difference cause this is not the place.

1. The word is "you" not "u." Which is especially amusing as you are denigrating everyone else here as "kids."
2. This is not a blog.
3. "Many of the people that get on these blogs are bitter ass kids who hate to see a production that they didn't get cast in,go down the drain."
So if they hate to see such a production go down the drain, that means they want it to succeed.

Well, the first act was bad, but the second act was worse! Sadly though, you missed the trampolines! I still laugh thinking about those.
In the end I remember these two things: That hunter parrish didn't take off his shirt, and that they brought out trampolines in the second act.

Left at the interval?! Now you'll never know how it ends.
Never fear, apparently there's a book tie-in should you regret your decision.

Posted: 10/24/11 at 5:47pmSondheimFan, when I saw it, the audience was very enthusiastic about the show. Long ovations after every number. It certainly seemed like a crowd pleaser. Is it a perfect production? No, but if you go in with an open mind, you might have a surprisingly good time. And I was expecting the worst based on the feedback here...

I actually thoroughly enjoyed it when I saw it. Is it corny? Yes. Are the topical references somewhat overdone? Yes. But is it a good time that you will remember and actually take something away from? Hell (oops), Yes.
I think many of the people who criticize the show are guardians of the original, which I do respect. But isn't the point of the show to update and ad-lib so the show won't become a relic? As long as the parables and beatitudes and such remain intact, you'll always have the heart of GODSPELL.
(Go ahead, call me, a 17-year old Jersey boy, a shill. I dare you...)

Updating and adjusting is natural for this show. But change for its own sake is not good; GOOD change is good. Crap is crap, and this production is utter crap. I don't think people are really complaining about this incarnation being different; they're complaining about this incarnation sucking. They are complaining about it being dim-witted, charmless, heavy-handed, spectacularly unfunny, and boring.
It's great if anyone had fun at the show, and I'm glad that they felt that their money wasn't wasted. Personally, I felt as though I had paid for a below-average middle school production.

Dumb kids who spent $1000 dollars to invest in this show are trying to convince themselves that it was still worth it, despite the fact that it was cash down the toilet on a show their peers now hate.
