I think it's basically a cast recording of a show that has no production yet. They're just selling the "concept" of the show in hopes of getting a producer for it.
many shows have them- if you're into aida or ragtime, they both have one.

Fienstein, who plays Mother and Sarah in the concept of Ragtime?

Concept albums are usually released when the producers of the album or the music itself have enough money to finance a recording on its own before a major production is up and running, like "Jekyll and Hyde" or "Aida". Also with "Aida", Elton John I believe funded some of the recording, but it was also funded by the record label because he had his celebrity friends sing the score (Janet Jackson, Shania Twain, LeAnn Rimes, himself, etc.).

The Ragtime concept album has the most of the same principal cast as the Original Broadway cast, but it was recorded very early in rehearsals in Toronto. It contains Houdini and Evelyn's duet, "That's the Showbiz" which never made it to Broadway.
The only principal performers that changed from Toronto to Broadway were Emma Goldman, Booker T. Washington, Grandpa, and the two children.

The Show Biz never made it to Broadway? I LOVE that song!
I must have the Concept recording then.
thanks all - i thought that was too good of a cast to actually be on bway. its impossible.

When I saw the show in Toronto, "The Showbiz" had been replaced by another similar duet for Houdini and Evelyn called "I Got a Feeling". By the time it opened on Broadwaym they just had a secion in the "Atlantic City" producton number.

If you liked Jekyll and Hyde's concept album, Scarlet Pimpernel also had a concept album with Linda Eder called "Linda Eder sings Scarlet Pimpernel" ofcourse it is not only her there is some guy also singing the male songs hehe! But personally I enjoyed the OBCR better!
I love "That's The Showbiz" too!
Jesus Christ Superstar was a huge hit in the early 70's as a concept album. And Chess started as a concept album if I'm not mistaken (Chess fans?).
More recently, Jerry Herman's score, Miss Spectacular was released as a concept album. Has anyone heard recent news about the long-discussed Las Vegas production of this show?
judy_in_disguise if you have been listening to the concept album of Ragtime all the while and thought it was the OBCR then you are in for a treat!! Go out and buy the OBCR right away!
Evita also started out as a concept album (strange, because by that time ALW and Tim Rice were already big names, so they didn't need to drum up noise with a concept album. Maybe it was a standard practice at the time?).
