Victoria Clark could do it very well. Ditto Christine Ebersole.
Those two women are the same age as Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone who have both played the role (one currently is, in fact).
I'd like to see either one of them tackle the role because I think they'd be really amazing. I think Ebersole might bring out the vulnerable, human side of Rose really well. (I tend to think Rose had to be really insecure to do the things she did.) And yes, Christine Ebersole does have the pipes for the role. She'd be amazing.

Caroline O'Connor would be interesting! Dollypop, I really hope you are kidding about Loretta S*it. She was AWFUL in Drood croaking her way through her "songs".
Why the heck are some of you saying Victoria Clark needs to wait 10-15 years!?!
In 15 years she'd be almost 65. That's entirely too old. She's almost 50. She's the perfect age NOW. Remember Rose is the mother of small children in the beginning.
Honestly... I don't want to see this show again for a while.
As good as it is, it's cycling around way too often. Every other year now, and more often in regional and community theatre productions.
I've already seen a brilliant "Rose" (Tyne Daly), and countless others on every level, ranging from very good to terrible.
And I'm done for a while. I know every line. I know every step of Jerome Robbins' choreography, whether done by Broadway professionals or the kids in a summer youth program. I know the jokes and the beats, and I can hum along with the incidental music, let alone every song.
"Gypsy" = Back of my hand.
I wish we could all smell and stop the Roses.

"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."
Why wouldn't Victoria Clark or Christine Ebersole be good as Rose? Both are excellent actresses and singers and have a combination of the strength masking a vulnerability that the role requires. I really think either one would be quite good and may surprise even you, thesbijean.

I think we all think that Mama Rose has to be played by a larger then life persona (a la Ethel Merman).... Mama Rose was not a Meman-esque looking person.
So Thesbijean -- how would you feel if a Rita Moreno or a Tanya Pinkins where to do a take on Mama Rose?

Victoria Clark especially, for me, she is too subtle of a performer to play the bombastic Rose. All of Clark's "famed" performances are all characters who are subtle and quiet on the outside, complete opposite of what Rose would need. The picture I see in my head of Clark as Rose is already boring me out of my mind.
Amen, jrb! Totally agree. I'm all for atypical portrayals-aren't they part of the reason we revive these shows? To see someone else's interpretation? (and hopefully be blown away and surprised.)

God forbid you ever think outside the box. I never listed "the name of my favorite actress". I just think some people get it in their head that a part can only be played a certain way or that an actor is only limited to what we have seen them do.
I'm not saying you did, I'm just saying, that WHENEVER a thread like this comes up, the SAME people always list the SAME actors, and I just find it mildly amusing.
Um, no offense to Sara Ramirez, but has she even shown she is capable of playing Mama Rose? I'm all for thinking outside the box in casting, but she hasn't really shown that she could act the role.

I doubt many people thought Bernadette could have played the role. In fact, they did doubt. Loudly. And while there are plenty of people who didn't like her in the role. Again, loudly. She was regarded by most others as quite excellent.
