Re: Deaf West Revival of Whistle Down the Wind

Aug 5, 2026 — 11:03:52 PM

Timon3 said: "I used to find the premise of the book to be unbelievable, bordering on preposterous that a revival meeting comes to town in small part of the US in a big top, meanwhile a young girl loses her mother only to discover that a man hiding out on a run as a escaped convict believes this person to be Jesus and can reunite her with her mother, you have to really think is that story plausible in any shape or form? But then again most of America believe that Trump is the savior!"I don't ...

Re: Deaf West Revival of Whistle Down the Wind

Aug 5, 2026 — 4:04:13 PM

I was also there over the weekend. In terms of production value, it was about what I expected. I'm grateful I went, not because I think this particular staging "worked" (I'd say it's still very far from figured out), but because for me it was a gateway into getting to know a musical I can't believe I'd kept out of my awareness for so long. Before Sunday, I had basically only known the title and had heard the title song two or three times. The show is far from perfect, but I honestly can't sto...

New Jennifer Nettles musical, GIULIA, will premiere in NY this fall

Jul 2, 2026 — 1:40:10 PM

I'm eager to hear more reviews and word of mouth. I'm excited to see this later in July and very hopeful. The music sounds exciting and the rehearsal footage looks awesome. I will say, the lyrics I've heard so far leave a lot to be desired for me... very broad strokes lyrics about rising, dreaming, fighting, darkness and light that feel like they could be inserted into any story. But I'll reserve any further judgment until after seeing the whole thing. I suppose her branding it a "pop-eretta"...

Is the Hercules Transfer Dead?

Jul 1, 2026 — 6:06:58 PM

I honestly hope they just let this one go and stop trying. And I say that as a huge Hercules movie fan who spent years wishing for a stage adaptation. I agree that the closest they've come to success was the Delacorte Public Works production. It still wasn't great, but it was closer than any of the other attempts. The Paper Mill production was tragic. They stumble right out of the gate with that slowed-down "Ba dada dada" version of "The Gospel Truth." How they managed to fumble one of the mo...

Lincoln Center Theater 2026-2027 Season

Jun 24, 2026 — 9:50:35 AM

This is so exciting!! I think Jasmine Amy Rogers is going to be incredible. Personally, I don't find arguments about Black women having existed in 1930s Austria, or comparisons to Lauren Ambrose not actually being a Cockney "guttersnipe," super persuasive when it comes to defending this casting choice (though I know some of it is just sarcasm). Lauren Ambrose was performing/acting a social class and accent. Elphaba is costumed to be green and performs magic. Jasmine Amy Rogers won't be perfor...

Lincoln Center Theater 2026-2027 Season

It wouldn’t bother me at all if the Von Trapp kids were of different races. But if they ‘re all six feet tall, well, obviously, THAT would be a problem.

Caps in theaters

May 26, 2026 — 1:18:46 PM

EvanstonDad said: "This entire conversation sort of boggles my mind. I had no idea people had such strong attitudes about baseball caps. I wear baseball caps almost all the time. I don't have a medical condition, but I am bald, and a hat protects my scalp from sun, and it also helps keep me warm as I tend to run colder anyway and not having hair doesn't help. Also, I just like the way it looks on me. I can't conceive of a situation where a baseball cap would be obstructing someone's view to a...

"Follies" coming to DC

May 20, 2026 — 5:34:56 PM

CoffeeBreak said: "I agree. Both of these theatres produce productions that far exceed anything in NYCNow that's just silly. I have been to both of these theaters shows'. They are good regional theaters. Many are. But like my post said. They are indeed regional theaters doing a co-production - as regional theaters do. "far exceeding" NYC shows is ridiculous. It's the reason they source talent FROM NYC for their shows. "Far exceed anything" might be hyperbolic but I try to catch most of their ...

Who's taking Leading Actress in a Musical this year?

May 15, 2026 — 1:44:09 PM

MadsonMelo said: "I actually think Ragtime can win for Nichelle but not Ben, feels so much Like DeShields’ to lose"It feels off to be so perplexed by this as a huge fan of his, but for those of you who feel like this is the case, is it because you think the performance warrants it or because of his command of presence and legacy? Don't get me wrong, I loved him in Jellicle Ball... I just have trouble wrapping my head around this being a Tony winning performance considering the volume and scop...

Who's taking Leading Actress in a Musical this year?

May 15, 2026 — 7:05:13 AM

I love Caissie Levy and I’ll absolutely be rooting for her, even though I have to admit this wasn’t my favorite performance of hers. I haven’t spent much time in the Ragtime threads, so it’s kind of relieving to hear I’m not the only one who wasn’t totally blown away by her Mother. For me, her arc didn’t feel as defined as it has in other productions I’ve seen. Slightly off-topic, but since someone brought him up, Andre DeShields is one of my favorite performers. He was amazing in Hadestown, ...

THE LOST BOYS Reviews

Also, Alididn't do anything for me with the choice of doing the voice of HIM by the powerpuff girls, but maybe it was just not for me."The voice of HIM??? A layered falsetto with heavy reverb and a vaguely British accent??? Did something change in previews that I missed?

Trump takeover of DC

Feb 2, 2026 — 11:46:18 AM

“I would prefer Congress first deal with his personal extra-judicial militia that is assassinating US citizens but that’s just me."I think most of us would strongly, overwhelmingly prefer that what you mention happens first. Expressing hope that Congress steps up about the Kennedy Center and sharing that here doesn’t mean it’s anyone’s top concern overall. It is relevant to this discussion about Trump’s KC takeover though. For those mentioning the possibility of him leveling it: is that an act...

LCT's MAN OF LA MANCHA Concert

I’m very partial to Aldonzas who skew older (40–60). I’ve seen so many regional productions cast a bombshell in her twenties, and it always feels like a missed opportunity. I think the story is sadder and more beautiful when the Dulcinea illusion is projected onto a more wor...

Michaela Diamond, Andrew Durand, David Hyde Pierce, Jasmine Amy Rogers & more to star in OKLAHOMA! concert at Carnegie Hall

Jan 13, 2026 — 7:17:25 PM

I was there too and thought it was fabulous. Almost no notes. So well sung and perfectly cast. Micaela Diamond is such a star. Also, I don’t understand why Shuler Hensley said there wouldn’t be costumes or choreo. There were both. Not to the degree there would be in a fully mounted production - and dream ballet was orch only, but it was not at all pure concert. I guess to manage expectations for people not used to these semi-stagings?

I think Schele Williams is a terrible director (I’ll never forgive her lazy hand on the Wiz revival), BUT she was also part of the original productions of AIDA, and so she may have some insight that an outside director might not."I’ve longed...

SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS with Raul Esparza @ Lincoln Center

Nov 23, 2025 — 8:36:05 PM

Jordan Catalano said: "That was sublime. I love these master voices concerts, they’re like old school Encores shows. I wish we could get more of not only these concerts but beautiful scores like this."Completely agree. One of my favorite things I've seen all year. master voices has really upped their game. I loved The Frogs, too. But this I felt was next-level. Now I wish they'd redo Anyone Can Whistle with a different Cora. I also much prefer their productions in the Rose Theatre over Carneg...

Anyone seen Linda Eder recently?

macbeth said: "Was considering seeing her at 54 Below, as it's been about 16 years since I've seen her live. My memories of a fantastic voice, but not much of an audience connection. Has anyone seen her in the last couple of years?"Saw her back in March at the Keswick and thought she was terrific. Loved her set and found her to be very charming.
