Thanks for all your interesting responses! There are a lot of names there that I hadn't considered, so now I'm re-evaluating my original answer...however I do feel that, had she lived, Lorraine Hansberry would be the definitive choice. I've also wondered about the lack of female playwrights, or at least successful/popular ones, and yet to come up with an answer.
