Richard Linklater - Merrily We Roll Along
My skepticism about this movie has very little to do with “using years” to make it and more to do with not believing Richard Linklater can stage a number like “Now You Know” for film.

I think it teaches us what NOT to do in a long relationship. A lot of long term relationships and marriages have shades of this and I think the audience knows that. That’s why it’s a good piece of work. It’s not just alcoholism it explores. It also explores the weird compromises and ways to not go crazy when it’s just the two of you. These people are monsters but they have moments that make the audience of couples feel pointed at.

Yes the economy of Broadway is broken but this show also has no plot and is Cats.And there’s a lot of explaining you have to do to people who don’t know what ballroom is.It’s a wonderful show but it is tremendously niche.General audiences want plot. I don’t think we are in a “Let’s go see Stomp” economy

I think what’s interesting about how the mid Phantom of the Opera movie didn’t dim the brand and the show kept thriving was partially cause the movie kinda came and went. There wasn’t a mono culture/social media exhaustion that came with the existence of the movie. People all agreed the live show was still worth buying a ticket for.Wicked movies were a two year press tour constantly in the news and it all built to a finale that across the board underwhelmed.
