Because the show's principal tracks are all demanding, either physically, vocally, or both (arguably with the exception of Ernest, but that's not a role you want a big name in).

Death Becomes Her is a VERY physical show. You need to really be able to do the physical comedy as well as everything else.

Can't say I didn't see this coming, but it's still so sad. My beloved DBH! I'll never understand how the producers let this ship sink while losing millions of dollars

Love this show! Was so hoping to see stars like Sherie Rene Scott, Stephanie J Block, or even Jane Krakowski the mix. Pipe dream was Miss Piggy for a special performance!

I'm already expecting the Lunt's roof to blow off during that final "For the Gaze."

I’m sure they might have been approached but many, including Laura Benanti, declined due to the physical demands of the show as well as the vocal demands. No one was up to the 8 performances a week scenario balancing all this AND a personal life.

Well damn. Not surprising. But what is completely mystifying is how they seemingly just let this thing freefall without any major shakeup in tactics to try and reverse course. If new casting wasn't possible, how about new marketing strategies at least? This show held steady in grosses for so long, but then stumbled in the winter and continued to lose more and more each week. But it felt like they didn't try anything new with their advertising to save it. I'll miss this show, it was so much fun and an easy recommendation to folks coming to the city on a trip.

It's interesting, as I know of a few "names" that could definitely sell tickets that recently auditioned for the creative team. They must have realized that running cost outweighed projected ticket sales. Sad, It was such a fun show.

When I saw it recently, I knew the writing was on the wall if they didn't switch it up, I'm surprised they didn't even bother through the Summer, but the energy and spark just wasn't there anymore. It will do well on tour, tho.

Viola could have been a contender too. Good chance they TRIED a dozen+ ladies and couldn’t get anyone bigger than M. Williams. And it’s so expensive to run that a C-or-D-lister probably wouldn’t help them much at all.

Joining the chorus of the bummed.

The closing has been obvious for a bit but it's still frustrating. As noted above, I'm not sure why they didn't try... anything else? It's true that the two leads are quite demanding and probably hard to replace but why wasn't Viola cast with a rotating assortment of gay icons? Yes, it's quite a sing as written but I'd think they could find some folks to look fabulous and belt it... or even changing the songs so folks could sing it. Or even casting Broadway icons in the other roles... get some repeat business?

I'm sure there are reasons but this whole thing feels like a missed opportunity.

I wanted to love this show so badly that I bought and refunded tickets three (3) separate times between June and January trying to catch the original leads. And yes, I fully understand understudies are talented and often just as good (sometimes better) than the principals.

When I finally did get to see the show, there were still absences. I understand the material is incredibly physical and demanding, but I still think there were major missteps here:

  1. The producers should have implemented and announced alternate schedules much earlier — well before Megan’s injury in June.
  2. The run could have been extended with stunt casting to help maintain audience interest. I get that it’s difficult to find replacements, but I just can’t wrap my head around this with so many talented actors at a time when there are shows closing.

I’m grateful I did get to see Hilty and Simard’s final performance together, even if it cost far more than I originally intended to spend. But Sieber and Williams were both out, and there were moments where the cast felt like they were phoning in the material. Honestly… really disappointing, especially with how great the music, costumes, sets, and premise are.

It deserves better and I only wish I could go back in time to have seen it around opening/prior to all of the constant callouts and awards season.

Shocked but not surprised.

They really let it go into freefall. Even if the casting aspect was tough, like someone said earlier, there was no real attempt to reinvigorate the marketing to make it seem fresh or “must see”. Going back to casting, it also seemed that the most viable replacements (Bean, Vosk, Gasteyer, Cox)

I’m glad they had a good run but it definitely had legs for much longer. Also, a bit weird to hear this is closing and yet not a peep on Beaches 😂

I'll guess and say they tried to stunt cast one of the lead roles and nothing worked out. The tour should do well.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
