Kennedy Center Honor for Liza!

May 20, 2013 — 11:34:32 PM

Liza is also a good international ambassador for American entertainment. She's not only known worldwide she's actually better regarded internationally than in the US.

Liza Back To Broadway In New Musical?!?!??!?!

"I just don't want her to go out like Mama. Diminished capacity, on her last legs, put on the road just to make someone a buck when she should be resting. If she's healthy, keep truckin!" She's nothing like Mama in that regard. She's had her own production company for her solo shows for most of her career. She works when she wants to, she doesn't need to.

Liza Back To Broadway In New Musical?!?!??!?!

It really wouldn't break my heart to never hear her sing NYNY again, but I know a lot of people expect her to do it. She's capable of so much more than being hemmed in by casual fan expectations allow. I wish she would bury a lot of the stuff that's "expected."

sometimes it seems like Liza lets friends and favored organizations use her name just for pre-show publicity

Liza's Australian Medley

Sep 1, 2012 — 1:12:23 PM

Wow, she pronounces "Melbourne" as Australians do, which is unusual for most Americans might have to do with marrying an Aussie that same year

Ethel Merman/Ethel Waters

Aug 28, 2012 — 6:38:22 AM

it would be lovely if I had access to a physical library right now You live in LA and don't have access to a physical library?? C'mon, get out of the house! Even if the local public library doesn't have anything they can get you books from other libraries. Most public libraries also have useful online resources available (e.g. The New York Times). A simple name search of the historical NYTimes database produced over 2,600 hits for Ethel Waters, including many original critical reviews.

Most Depressing theatre photos ever

The vast majority of these are old movie palaces. Most of them likely closed and aren't viable just due to local economics.

re: Liza's At The Palace broadcast.. a few thoughts.

Nov 25, 2009 — 9:34:26 AM

Huh, my initial post seems to have disappeared into the ether. Moving on. Liza certainly showed here that she's her father's daughter. Her dad was known for his frequent lack of fluid verbal expression when trying to communicate directorial specifics. It drove some of his actors to the brink.

re: How is a performer's employment set up?

Jan 12, 2009 — 1:27:59 AM

In many (most?) states self-employed people (contract hires) are not eligible for unemployment benefits. However, if a production company is a corporation (which is an entity unto itself) and the performer is employed by said corporation along with being a (or THE) shareholder, the corporation can technically cease employing the performer, rendering the performer eligible for unemployment. I think my state has some restrictions on eligibility in such a case but I don't know if NY does.

How is a performer's employment set up?

Jan 12, 2009 — 12:48:44 AM

Are Broadway performers contract hires or direct hires? If they are contract hires how are they eligible for unemployment when the contract expires? How about for major stars who own the production company that is employing them? Are they also eligible for unemployment if the production company existed just to mount a single show?
