Elaborate lives, if you actually listen to it, it makes no sense.
"Gossip's worth its weight in gold" - Phantom
Gossip has no weight and therefore it is worth nothing. (sorry..makes perfect sense to me...and I highly dislike Phantom)
But they're making money off of the gossip...so...
A good 75% of Spring Awakening.

Agreed Scarywarhol
Some of it is quite beautiful, but the rest of either comes out to be stupid in an attempt to be poetic, or it just sounds like I am being sexually harassed. Pretty Music Thought :)

Andallthatjazz, I actually laughed at loud at that.
Totally agree with both posts. Anything from Aida or Spring Awakening. Problem with Aida is, you don't even know WHAT they're saying. Then, when you finally figure it out, you're like, W - T - F ?!?!
But don't get me wrong. I love both of these shows.
But maybe not as much as I love "purple summers." :)
"Don't cry for me Argentina"
Why would we? You don't die until the finale!
I feel like Steven Sater was water coloring as he wrote the lyrics to SA...
Purple Summer
Blue Wind
Mirror-Blue Night
any more?
I thought "don't cry for me, Argentina" didn't mean cry as in tears, but as in cry out her name. she comes onto the balcony after the crowd has begun crying out her name, and she's telling them there's no need to, because she's always there for her country.
at least, that's what I thought.
Nope. The side of Eva's cript includes plaques with quotes from her. One of them begins, "Don't cry for me..." Updated On: 11/25/08 at 09:54 PM
"Buenos Aires", though, really doesn't mean anything.
Also, a lot of the songs from "Guys and Dolls" have some random throwaway lines. My favourite being in "More I Cannot Wish You:"
Standin' there
Gazing at you
Full of the bloom of youth.
Standin' there
Gazing at you
With the sheep's eyes
And the licorice tooth.
I agree with Spring Awakening's lyrics. I saw the title of this thread and it was the first thing I thought of.
i dont get how "Elaborate Lives" makes no sense... i think it does
But they're making money off of the gossip...so...
the gossip is being printed in all the papers.
I'd like to know what silent music is.
"Silent music starts to play / One tear in my eye / makes the whole world cry"
With One Look, Sunset Boulevard.
i think the point is that nothing happened... and that it contradicts itself
I think silent music literally means silent music. It's a silent film, so there is no music, but you get so swept up that you hear everything you need to hear.

"It's our funeral too."
Evita is full of lines that sound "clever" and "cutting" and "pertinent", but on closer examination they don't actually mean very much.
Continuing with Evita...
Also during Oh, What a Circus
"As soon as the smoke from the funeral clears". Why is there smoke at a funeral?
In that EVITA lyric, I don't think Che means smoke literally. Rather, I think he is saying smoke to mean that since everyone is weeping over Eva's death, it's acting as smoke that is covering up all she did wrong for her country.
or that everything she achieved was done with smoke and mirrors?
or, when something causes commotion, dust goes up in the air and has to settle before you can see... something like that
