I doubt I'll live long enough to know when Phantom closes. And it will probably require a seance by my greatgrandchilren for me to learn when Wicked closes.

Phantom, The Lion King, and Wicked will easily be the three longest running shows in Broadway history. It is hard to say if anything will ever overtake Phantom. It may have another 10+ years left in it.

Who knew that "Phantom," a musical by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit, has run 25 years on Broadway? Oh - you probably mean "The Phantom of the Opera," running at the Majestic Theatre.

Right. Because when you mention the words "Phantom" and "Broadway", it's just TOO DARN CONFUSING! The rarely seen Kopit and Yeston musical that never had a Broadway run is the first thing that comes to mind.

And when people mention lay mizz, I never have any idea what they're talking about. And don't even get me start on How to Succeed!

Mr. Wonderful is probably confused by nick names too, or first names for that matter.

I notice he did shorten the title of Kushner’s play "The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism With a Key to the Scriptures" to simply "The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide..." Maybe we should just start putting the ellipsis after the word Phantom. Maybe that would stop the confusion he was suffering.

Oh, and when I say Kushner's play, I am referring to Tony Kushner. I don't want anyone to be confused by just using a portion of a well known playwright's name.

I hate to be a spoil sport, but does anyone really care if another show eventually will surpass the curious phenomenon that is PHANTOM OF THE OPERA?

Considering someone started a thread that went on for 2 pages, yes.

I know I can't be the only one who continues to be baffled by Phantom's staying power. Do I love the musical? Yes. Have I seen it more than once? Yes. But do I think it belongs in anyone's Top 5 Musicals of All Time - or even Top 10 for that matter - ? Not by a long shot. It's long on spectacle and music but short on substance and character development. It's a pretty mediocre musical, if you ask me. I don't understand how it has lasted this long. That said, I think Lion King is even more mediocre and don't think it deserves to even come close to breaking Phantom's record.

I do agree that until Phantom actually closes, this is a moot discussion. Personally, I think Rent is 10 times the musical that Phantom ever was or could ever hope to be. It deserves that top spot. I guess tourists disagree, though.

There is no definite. Phantom is still running. The rest is speculation. Something else could come in and wipe them both off the map.

Well, if the show is still doing as well as it is, then why did they stop the tour? It came to Tempe several times and ALWAYS sold out within a couple of weeks of the tickets going on sale? Are they just taking a break, or are they planning to do not tour at all anymore. (excluding if and when non-equity tours may arise.)

Looks like Phantom will come back on tour in 2012 with new sets and costumes.

Makes sense. After 25 years, it could probably use a facelift.

Seems like it is following the steps of Les Miserables.

Not to be confused with Dave19.
