Making investment back may be a producer's definition of flop. but it wouldn't be most people's.
Most people's is subjective, love. Only the business one is objective, it either did or didn't.
Not making back it's investment is the OFFICIAL definition of Flop.
Ham a Broadway Show being flop or not IS NOT based on artistic merrit. It is based on return from an investment. It is called SHOW BUSINESS not SHOW THAT WAS PRETTY ARTFUL.

Some definition of "flops" seem pretty narrow. E.g. 9 to 5 ran 5 months, that may not be a smash but not a flop either?
Once again the definition of a FLOP is a show that does not repay its costs.
9 to 5 die not pay off.
5 months is not long enough for a big Broadway musical to pay off. Even in the 1930s/40's shows needed to run at least a year to pay off.
There are rare exceptions: A few flop shows were also able to post a slight profit due to films rights sales. PETER PAN (1954) played 19 weeks so many assume it was a FLOP but because NBC had paid for the rights to do a TV broadcast the show was in fact out of the red before it even opened in Broadway with the run planned for just 19 weeks.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
