Posted: 1/20/09 at 5:44pmWell, apparently Parker herself was telling people at the stage door that she needed to work on her vocals. Not exactly a ringing endorsement.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 5:55pmWell, not to be saying the same thing as her defenders, but it was her first day. I imagine everyone needs to have some work on her vocals. I know they should be pretty much down, so I guess it's just to what extent does she need work...and part of that statement could have been modesty.

Posted: 1/20/09 at 10:38pmadamgreer, I believe Parker was referring to her familiarity with the score in terms of her singing (due to her lack of rehearsal,) not the quality of her voice.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Posted: 1/21/09 at 8:37amIt's true, I made the mistake of pulling out my phone at intermission.. she sucked in the entire balcony and then screamed us all out of the theatre straight from the diaphragmn

but seriously now, this was posted on another forum:
"P.S. - my friend who I saw the show with on Friday went back today and said Nicole completely blew the roof off vocally, and was "300% better" than her first show"
as well another member said they saw her Saturday and that she was AMAZING.

"Patti LuPone is now a full-time usher at the Gershwin, that's why."
I laughed a good 2 minuets. Thanks for that.
"said Nicole completely blew the roof off vocally, and was "300% better" than her first show"
Glad she's improving.

I went last night with an open mind regardless of what I've read here.
It's true: she can act BUT she can't sing! She's not horrible, but not great either -well, not yet?
I think in time she has the potential to do better once she has more confidence in her role and vocals.

What the Hell are you talking about? She can't sing? So the producers hired her without ever hearing her? Oh no, then you say she's not horrible but not great, but might be one day? We're supposed to take this seriously? Please.

Posted: 1/21/09 at 6:44pmI thought that review made sense. She isn't broadway worthy yet. Made sense to me.

I've found some audio!
Just the start of What Is This Feeling so not much, but better than nothing I guess! Not enough for me to form an opinion though.

P.S. Sorry if I'm not allowed to post stuff like that, any moderators etc. feel free to remove it.

Though that audio doesn't really provide us with much, it does say that she can hold her own when singing harmony. It's not a very tricky harmony, I'll give you that, but for someone with apparently limited experience (I don't really know her performance history), I'd say that was a decent little audio snippet.
Still waiting on the big ones, though.

Posted: 1/22/09 at 1:12pmThat sounds like they're both playing Galinda!
#116re: Nicole Parker reviews here
Posted: 1/22/09 at 1:30pmHer voice is certainly more high-pitched than most of the Elphabas, which allows for less of a harmony, but I think she sounds great.

The teacher in me noticed that immediately, too. I was very tempted to go looking for a red pen to circle it, then I realized it was a photo, not a student's work.
(It's the end of our quarter and I've been bogged down grading papers all week...)

She looks great as Elphaba!
Although, does anybody else think that the green body suit looks a little big for her, seems to be more baggy around the arms than I remember it being on Kerry Ellis or Alexia Khadime (the only two I've seen in the flesh).
