I must say those "backstage photo-ops" bug the hell out of me. A video would have been nicer, and wouldn't have that photography student "look I'm artistic, I take black and white photos at odd angles" aspect going on.
Back on topic Nicole's green seems alot more pastel than previous Elphaba's
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
Listening to the clip of her doing Defying Gravity she sounds like she has a nice voice, just needs to work on it a bit. However, the gal playing Glinda sounds horrible!!
I think she sounds very good all things considered. She doesn't stand out against the "big Elphaba's" (Idina, Sho, Eden and Stephanie) but I think she can carry the role (or atleast Defying Gravity) quite well.
You're reminding me of people you hear at the movies asking questions every ten seconds, "Who is that? Why is that guy walking down the street? Who's that lady coming up to him? Uh-oh, why did that car go by? Why is it so dark in this theater?" - FindingNamo on strummergirl
"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor
"That's, like, twelve shows! ...Or seven." -Crazy SA Fangirl
"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott
She definitely sounds better than she did her first night, but still, without a doubt the weakest Elphaba they've had vocally. Not even in the same league as most of the others.
she definitely sounds a little nervous during the flying part, but she is a million times better than what I was expecting. i think cassie levy and lisa brescia also both sounded weak in their first performances, but turned out to be great so i'm sure nicole will improve too!
She DOES look very pale green. I've never seen the show live, but from what I've seen, I always thought Elphaba was usually a brighter green. She looks cute, though.
In my pants, she has burst like the music of angels, the light of the sun! --Marius Pantsmercy
That may also be because these were shot under bright halogen lights backstage and during the show they use the lights to enhance her green, at some point even using a green spotlight directly on her face.
Everyone looks like **** under halogen lights.
And I listened to the audio and she really is not that bad at all. She seems to be actually trying too hard and once her nerves settle and she has more shows under her belt she'll be wonderful. Especially if she as great as acting the role as everyone is saying she is.
I agree that the Glinda sounds awful.
I love America. Just because I think gay dudes should be allowed to adopt kids and we should all have hybrid cars doesn't mean I don't love America.

I for one, am VERY impressed with that clip of Nicole. From what people said, I was expecting a very poor performance, she does sound nervous as people pointed out before, but like someone said, once she has more shows under her belt, and her nerves are calmed, she'll be incredible. I'm not a huge fan of that Glinda, Alli, isn't it? I really like Nicole, though.
"That's a good point. Next time I pee on a Starbucks couch and throw straws and napkins at a barista, I'll just yell, "YOU DON'T KNOW ME OUTSIDE OF STARBUCKS! YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL!" and that should do it. "-LizzieCurry
Alli Mauzey is easily the worst Glinda ever to come through. Even more than Kate Reinders. And that's saying a lot. She was particularly bad in that audio.
However, it was Nicole's THIRD SHOW. Ever! While everyone says she should be perfect by the time she hits an audience, that's just not going to happen. She already sounds good and, in time, she'll improve. You can tell a phenomenal performance is in there. She has the vocal power and she hits the notes, but nerves are a big factor in the unsureness in her voice. She'll be swell. She'll be great.
She sounds like if Ana Gasteyer tried to borrow bits from SJB. She can make it work if she uses her own voice to do so, because now it sounds like her singing and then, suddenly, she's channeling another person. If she can take those riffs and acting choices and craft them into her own, she can have something really great.
I saw Nicole last night, and was shocked. After reading all of the negative reviews on here, I expected her to be terrible, and low and behold, she was quite wonderful. Her voice was in top form last night and her acting choices were unlike any other Elphaba I've seen (which is a good thing). It is always nice for multiple-Wicked-goers such as myself to see the role in a new, fresh light, and Nicole certainly does this. I was truly impressed. I hope she has a wonderful run as Elphaba and that people go see her and enjoy her performance.
In other news, when I saw Alli Mauzey and Marcie Dodd's first performance a few months ago, I did not care for Alli's performance as Glinda. Well, she has improved tremendously in the role and was getting tons and tons of laughs. Like I said earlier about Nicole, I think Alli is doing things with Glinda that have never been done before, and it makes the character more interesting. She is great.
I also loved PJ Benjamin, Alex Brightman, Brynn O'Malley, and Jayne Houdyshell (as I always do).
Kevin Kern was horrendous as Fiyero though, and I am glad he will be leaving the production tomorrow. Make way for Aaron Tveit (who I didn't love in the role, but will certainly be an improvement).
Congrats to the current cast of Wicked. The show is in great shape.
Nicole is good, but not in this audio by any means and let me tell you why. She has been on youtube listening to people and shes riffing. Riffing isnt for everyone, but its a common mistake a singer can fall into, shes clearly an alto and needs to stop reaching for flashy high riffy notes. She needs to embrace her Ana/SJB/Julia sound and not fall into the Marcie/Sho/Eden sound. I mean who doesnt wanna riff up the score, but it is just not for her. She needs to listen to Dee
I for one love Alli, one of the best singers in the role

Oh love, I'm so sorry. Did the producers come out and said "Dear audience, who paid $125 a ticket. You're really out of luck. It's only this honey's first performance. She'll be great in time, but you're going to see her nervous and her vocals will not be that good. Thank you for paying full price to our sold-out show, however. We wish you better luck next time!" Yeah?

blaxx, you keep on stating the fact that tickets cost $125 and therefore you should be guaranteed a good show. i completely disagree with you. this is live theatre. people payed the same amount of money to see some horrendous performances by some understudies in wicked whose names i wont bring up... and people also pay that amount of money to go to some really horrible shows, most of which have closed or are closing (although mermaid's still running.....)
but anyway, when you purchase a ticket for the theatre, you are always taking a gamble. if you really think that every performance should be worth the price of the ticket, i suggest you go see a performer after they have had time to settle into their respective role. $125 does not guarantee you anything. which is why i rarely sit in the orchestra. Yes, I do think that every performance on BROADWAY should be nothing but excellent. Otherwise, I'd buy a subscription to my local community theater and, gee! I'd be sure that little Peggy Anne won't be as nervous on her fifth performance of Grease.
Please...

you have been a member of bww since 2005 and you think that every performance on broadway is excellent? i'm not challenging you, i just disagree with you. ive seen far too many less-than-excellent performances, but i still love going back. and i am definitely not just talking about wicked.
Oh, love, I've seen MANY awful performers on Broadway. But the last thing I'd try to do was to justify their performance because of any excuse I could come up to.
It's not the quality of her first performance, it's just that Wickedites and other fan-based productions seem so obsessed with the show they love, that I could bring a dying ostrich to perform the role and they could justify it "Oh, it's an ostrich, and it's dying, give it a break - in two weeks it will burp those notes on key!"
Anyhow - back to Nicole Parker...
