Liza's 'Palace' to get TV reprise
by Gordon Cox
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are among the exec producers of a filmed version
of Liza Minnelli's recent Broadway show, "Liza's at the Palace," to be aired
on public television later this year.
"Liza's at the Palace," which played Broadway last December and picked up a
Tony for special theatrical event, will be filmed during reprise
performances set for Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 in Las Vegas at the Hollywood
Theater in the MGM Grand.
Matthew Diamond ("So You Think You Can Dance") will helm, with Zadan, Meron
and JoAnn Young -- producer of "Johnny Mathis Live: Wonderful, Wonderful!"
among other specials, as well as a writer of "Broadway: The American
Musical" -- exec producing.
"Liza's at the Palace" includes performances of the singer-thesp's signature
numbers as well as a tribute to Kay Thompson, the performer, writer, musical
director, arranger and vocal coach who was Minnelli's godmother.
Pianist-singer Billy Stritch also appears, reprising his Rialto duties as
musical director. Backing quartet of Cortes Alexander, Jim Caruso, Johnny
Rodgers and Tiger Martina also return.
American Public Television will distribute "Liza's at the Palace" in
December, with the special to be released on DVD by MPI Home Video in early
2010.
Show is a co-production of Jubilee Time Prods., American Public Television,
HDNET and Young Prods., in cooperation with the MGM Grand.
Zadan and Meron, exec producers of the screen version of "Chicago" and
producers on the "Hairspray" pic, previously presented the digitally
restored version of "Liza with a Z" seen on Showtime. They're also attached
to a potential Broadway revival of tuner "Promises, Promises."

Shouldn't it be called "Liza's (not really) at The Palace"?
I believe the title will be:
LIZA AT THE PALACE
AT THE HOLLYWOOD THEATRE
AT THE MGM GRAND IN LAS VEGAS!
Wish I could go and see the show in Las Vegas. But, I'll be out of town on that weekend. And, going during the week, wouldn't work out. Started a new job a few months ago, and wouldn't really be able to come in late the next morning. Looking forward to the dvd!

I saw this show in its out of town tryout in Woonsocket, RI. It was hands down the most incredible show I have ever seen.. she danced and sang her brains out and only sat down once during the whole 2 1/2 hours to sing "maybe this time"!!! I am thrilled that they are filming it in its entirety. you better believe i am taping it and buying the dvd!!!

It was fantastic! Saw it at The Palace in December, and again in July at Cabazon/Morongo Casino. Her performance of "Maybe This Time" was unbelievable! It's such an anthem! When I saw it, she also sat down near the end of Act 1 and sang "Cabaret," "Mein Herr," and "The World Goes Round."

Thrilling news. Saw her show 11 times on Broadway and am looking forward to owning it on DVD.
I will be there both nights front and center. Very cool.
Believe me, I wish I could go. That weekend - Sat/Sun, I'll be in San Fran. Had I not all ready had plans, I'd go.
I'm really excited this concert is being captured on film. I saw the show on Broadway last December as well and had a fantastic time.
I'm assuming; however, that the most moving moment (for me at least) won't be a part of the repertoire? Her rendition of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" that she sang at the end?
This particular song struck me on a personal level because I had just lost my mom earlier in the year and hearing her sing this song in tribute to her own mother literally brought me to tears. I believe it wasn't supposed to have originally been a part of the set list either, yet the song was added during the show's run at the Palace to coincide with the holidays?
Anyhow, would be nice to have that song included, but I will take anything she decides to perform for the concert recording.
TexasYankee, I assume so too. My mom found that moment the most moving as well, and actually so did I. We saw the show 2 glorious times. I am looking forward to the DVD. It annoys me that these things always take so long to come to fruition, but patience is a virtue.

The night that I saw Liza at The Palace in December, she did not sing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." Was quite surprised as she had sang it at other performances that week. But, she was probably still tweeking the show.
Did she sing "I'll Be Seeing You?" It was listed in the program and she sang it neither time I went. Unless it was an instrumental outro that I missed or something similar.

No, I don't think so.
Great news. I was worrying it would not get done.
I don't feel guilty for not spending $300 to see her at the Sydney Opera House now :).
I am hoping there are plenty of extras in the dvd featuring not only moments from the broadway run but moments from the previous two years of life on the road getting this all together.
It should be interesting as the Sept 30 show is the last one for paying audience members and the Oct 1 show is a special midnight show for Gypsies of the Strip shows. She does one whenever she's in Vegas just for show kids and it can get very wild & fun.
nealb, you and I were at the Palace the same night, and Liza definitely sang, "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." It was the last song, and I was sobbing.

Damn good idea to film this and sell it. I will definitely be buying this one.
