Early word on "La Cage" is good. Assuming it wins Revival this year, it will be twice for "La Cage" Has a show ever won Best Revival twice?? Not even "Gypsy" has done that. What about on the play side???
It would be the first time.
It would be the first musical to do so, which woul be very cool, but "Death of a Salesman" won Best Play in '49 and for its two revivals, one in the early 80s and then again 1999. That's the only other work thats won for each of its Broadway productions.
Will it be the third time a production of La Cage wins the Tony undeservedly? (I think I'm actually asking... I haven't seen the current production yet.)

No. It is easily the best musical revival of the season, in my opinion, and I adored Ragtime, Finian's, and Night Music. But La Cage has them beat.
Better than Ragtime and Finian's Rainbow? Must be pretty darn good then...

If it wins, yes. I found this season's revivals of Ragtime and A Little Night Music to be much better productions than this trashy, campy, mess.
I've seen seen all 6 revivals this season. And yes, I prefer Night Music. But no matter what I write regarding this topic, I will be called biased and many other things. I do think this La Cage is a much better production than Promises, Promises.

ljay, even though I don't think you're referring to me, I must say that even when I disagree with you, I almost always find your opinions to be fair and well-grounded.
but re: the original question, the revival Tonys in their current incarnation haven't really been around long enough to have many multiple revivals of shows nominated.

No, I wasn't referring to you at all! But I really appreciate you saying that.

I liked NIGHT MUSIC - it's certainly a beautiful production, though lugubrious.
I think RAGTIME still deserves it.
I think that "La Cage" really deserved the Tony first time around. It was the best musical because it spoke about what was going on at the time. It spoke so much about the issues going on in the 1980's.
I have a feeling that there might be some SITPWG fans who disagree.
Well, if anything, Sunday contains some of the most beautiful songs written by Sondheim. Best Score?
Either way, I have some catching up to do in regards to this year's musical revivals.

Do you guys think Finian's has chance? It was a critical hit, wasn't it?
Once again, we have a season where the old stuff is unarguably better than the new.

The bigger question is: Will Jerry Herman get the chance to clarify his remarks from the last time he won? Was he taking a jab at Sondheim? OTOH, if he clarifies, then boards like this one and ATC will have nothing to discuss and may disappear into the black void.
See, I personally loved Finian's a tad more than Ragtime. I thought it was a joyous revival. I can get behind a Finian's win at this point, although I haven't seen the ones still playing (I will...).

La Cage won Tony Awards
Best Musical and Score,
No honors higher.
Well, what did you think?
They would go to the Rink?
Or Maltby and Shire?
La Cage even beat out Sunday in the Park by Sondheim.
It's those tunes you can hum of which the folks have found that they are fond I'm
Sure you will agree.
If you go see
La Cage Aux Folles by Jerry.
(sung to a song I cannot name, but It is What It is)

"Will it be the third time a production of La Cage wins the Tony undeservedly?"
I don't think so, because I thought it won deservedly the first time, and the second time too.
It won deservedly the first time because, well, it was a pretty poor year for revivals (Sweet Charity and Pacific Overtures). It wasn't just the front runner, it was the obvious choice. This year it will probably win again as the only other deserving revival (Finian's Rainbow) has closed.
Well, to be fair, that second time was pretty slim pickings.

Then why did you think it won undeservedly that time?
