I believe Eli Wallach is older than Carol Channing -- he's over 90 now and Channing is just turning 90.

All snark aside, a major loss. I was no fan of the most recent GYPSY (loved the Laurents-derided Sam Mendes production), but without him we wouldn't have that show or WEST SIDE STORY. And then were would most of us be?

Wow. Echoing what others have said, difficult personality and all, his contributions to the art form are matched by very few.

Worshipping at the shrine of Chicago, Carousel, My Fair Lady, Kiss me Kate, Guys and Dolls, Show Boat, etc., etc., etc. Gypsy is a great show but it's not the ONLY great show.

I just thought he'd live forever.

I know a few people who were in the recent WEST SIDE STORY and GYPSY. We had many lively discussions about the man.

"May flights of angels sing him to his rest" (Hamlet)

"Long live God!" (GODSPELL)

wow. . . jaw dropped. shocked!

I am really sorry if I sound ignorant to this, but could someone please inform me about the hatred or unpleasing thoughts about Laurents?

Wow. This is sad.
He truly shaped our modern definition of theater.
For that I'd give him a big thanks.
Rest in peace, old man.

He was known to be a difficult man to work with due to his snarky tongue. Nevertheless he was a great contributor to the art form.

I was honestly starting to think he was a vampire.

All joking aside - RIP. Now, where is PJ?

We owe this man a great deal. Some will be happy, others will mourn. R.I.P Arther Laurents.

So, now that the Streisand monster has had him killed, does this mean her Gypsy will be back on?

I can't even take it.
West Side Story is and will always be the greatest piece of theatre ever created.

I am so grateful for what this man has done.

RIP. This is horrible news. I thought he would live a lot longer. He looked like he was in great shape when I met him during WEST SIDE STORY's out of town tryout. I am grateful to have seen his GYSPY and WSS, both of which were brilliantly directed.

I know many people said he was difficult to work with, so I'm glad I never got to, and only met him when he was in good spirits.

Thank you, Arthur, for all you have contributed to the world. You will be missed.

We should all live as long and productive a life has Arthur Laurents.

I honor the man: his merits and faults; I honor the work: his triumphs and failures.

Thank you, Mr. Laurents.

Will Obama be releasing a picture of the corpse? If he doesn't, I won't believe that he is dead.

Honoring the work is the best way to remember him. And despite his reported warring with Sydney Pollack, don't forget his excellent screenplay for THE WAY WE WERE.

Wow, I usually don't know of the people that BWW announces passing, but this one shocked me. RIP Arthur Laurents. His contributions to theater really were tremendous, and that's what matters right now, not the fact that he made many miserable. Never thought I would see this announcement.

R.I.P One of the most visionary men in the history of modern theatre.

I'm seriously wondering how Patti LuPone is feeling about this? (Only because I had read the GYPSY chapter of her memoir during school today)
