Telly is getting the best notices, too bad he wasn't cast as the Savior of this production.

New York Magazine is VERY positive
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/11/theater-review-is-godspell-worthy.html

so I guess it ended up being not straight slams, kind of a mixed bag.

And based on what I heard from someone tonight this shows weekly cost is incredibly low (i.e under 100,000 a week), so I have a feeling this will actually make it through at least the tonys

The word is, they didn't prepare the way of The Lord well enough.

I can see why they slammed the show, it's very flawed, but the cast and the score were fantastic! I had a great time seeing Godspell last week.

Exactly, thisismyshow. What does their budget go to, newspapers? Costume jewelry? Mops? I'm sure there isn't much crew, and the cast and band are few in number.

So...um...not to be *that* person but...

...is there any chance we can now get Arena Stage's production of Oklahoma! to fill Circle in the Square this season??? God I loved that show!

A one man play on Bway costs more the 100k. There are over 20 unions working inclusing at least 14 AEA contracts. Not including advertising which is VERY expensive. My guess is the show is costing 300k min.

Can someone explain why Godspell had no Gypsy Robe ceremony because there are no Chorus contracts?

http://twitter.com/#!/tellyleung/status/133692955121827840

Does that mean everyone in the show is on a Principal contract?

Can someone explain why Godspell had no Gypsy Rose ceremony because there are no Chorus contracts?

If cast traditionally, Godspell has no chorus. Every cast member has a feature number and nearly all of them carry the same weight as multiple characters from scene to scene.

Though it does make me wonder if Spelling Bee had any chorus contracts. I can't see how it would.

@musical comedy man

No way is it 300,000 most of the money to run it is going to the cast and crew, theres 1 costume change for each characters and one set piece, and the prop budget is almost nothing, keep in mind aea weekly contracts can be as low as something like 1600 a week times that by 10 and its only 16,000 (i am sure people like hunter, telly, anna and wallace are getting more though)

Well just a little run down... 10 actors 4 understudies and at least 2 stage manager... so 16 AEA contracts. Adding benefits and payroll taxes so about 40k right there (minimum). 6 band members roughly 15k. Theater rent 22k. Then add the box office staff, ushers, dressers, local 1, all the creative team weeklies (director choreographer, all the designers, orchestrator, etc) PLUS all the lighting and sound rentals. The general manager, company manager, house manager, producer charges... not to mention all the advertising and marketing... Trust me.

Namo, he has the solo throughout the song. And he has just as much to do as everyone else in rest of the show.

Plus the costs associated with having, like, 12,000 investors.

I would say 300k sounds about right. A lot of people don't realize what all goes into a show, what all has to be paid for, and where all the money has to go. From the Theatre rental, royalties, actors, equipment rental, staff, management, musicians, technicians, fly operator (who must be there even if no scenery is being flown), advertising, the list goes on, and everyone gets a slice of the pie.

I find it a little ironic that thismyshow is now stating a ton of figures with some degree of authority, as if having personal knowledge of the show. I wonder if (s)he still expects us to believe (s)he (still unsure of the gender) doesn't work for Davenport.

Not that it matters, really, at this point. Just a little observation.

That's the cutest quote of the week!

And how many musical revivals are there this season? With the ones coming up, this one might not even make it by default.
