That's sad. Though, I wonder where these remaining 300 stores are located. Mine closed last year, I believe.
Funny, I was actually going to bump up Jordan Catalano's post about video stores for something I just saw on buzzfeed. But, I guess this is appropriate now.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

Oh god, those people who are freaking out over K-Mart right now are soooooo annoying.
They couldn't two craps about the "poor employees who have to work". They're just pissed that all the freebies will be gone by the time they get to the stores.
I'm sad about this. The final Blockbuster store in Dallas is closing next month. I've had many good memories of visiting these stores. Fortunately, there are some independent video stores in the area. Farewell, Blockbuster.

the only blockbuster I know that is around is in Burbank... i used to frequent it a lot when I lived there... i drove by it and i was like WTF?! I thought for sure it had closed down..
Nothing beats getting lost in a book store and losing track of time. Think this will be a much greater loss for future generations...being able to randomly discover books on the shelf, sitting in the store, thumbing through magazines you didn't know existed, deciding that a misplaced book in a wrong location was a treasure waiting for you to find it...
Just looked online. I'm surprised there are still 3 stores in NJ. None are close to me though. You can probably buy a lot of stuff now or soon, depending on when the stores are closing. I got single disc dvds (no case) for 49 cents each. Plus, they are selling off the rentals in boxes and the new ones as well.

I think artsy or specialty independent video stores will stick around for a long while. The top one here reportedly had a big increase in sales this year.
I feel the same about independent book stores. Even specialty music stores. But in the case of the big franchises like this or Barnes and Noble, it makes sense.
What I find funny is though all these video stores are closing, my local REDBOX always has a line out the door. It's inside a grocery store and every time I go, the line has tons of people in it and even the other day a verbal fight of who was cutting in line started...it's too funny...we can't go to a video store anymore but vending machines are ok...
Apparently some stores are staying open. Those that are franchised are. I can't find a list of every store, but I remember Alaska and South Texas being on the list for franchised stores.
