Tune in tonight at 7 CST on Lifetime (3 for the TV premiere of the Beaches remake starring Idina Menzel, and then the one hour after party special immediately following. Post your thoughts on this IMHO unnecessary remake of the 1988 film...
I am actually watching the film for the 2nd time tonight! I thought Idina Menzel and Nia Long gave outstanding performances with a fresh/new take on a beloved classic. The movie soundtrack is also superb!
I know since it is a remake people will want to compare Bette's CC and Barbara's Hillary but from the get-go I don't think it ever intended to replace the original. Without spoiling anything, there are some minor character/plot differences.
But I definitely recommend at least giving it a chance and watching before passing judgment. Just like in theatre productions, different actors will portray the same role with a unique interpretation, and I really enjoyed Idina and Nia's.
watching it now... the song Idina sings about loving the love that loves alone was absolutely ridiculous.... but in like a wonderful way that was awful and terrific.
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
I was not a fan of it. Couldn't make it through. Most surprising of all is that a couple of songs that Idina sung had me wincing. Her voice just sounded off and no where near her usual caliber. Disappointed but not surprised that it wasn't good. Classics should not always be remade, that's why they are classics..
The only review of a show that matters is your own.
I always did wonder how the original BEACHES came to be a "classic" when most of its critical reviews were negative. Would that make it, by definition, a cult movie?
It falls in the same realm as people considering BARBARELLA and BEACH BLANKET BINGO classics. For all the good and for all the bad, they ARE indeed classics now.
