So interesting. Michelle would have read 2/3 of those queens for filth over their workroom entrance and runway looks. Just a totally different aesthetic in Canada, I guess. Almost like they’re a decade behind us.
Some random thoughts on just a few queens -
Ilona gets on my nerves. I don’t understand being a bitch just to be one. Also those looks were A MESS.
Scarlet Bobo reminds me of John Cameron Mitchell
Rita gives off Tempest vibes. Not at all sure how her runway look was called the “most polished” but ok, sure if you squint, maybe.
Did Anastarzia Rip off Mayhem’s cowgirl look?
Boa is crazy and I love her.
Juice Boxx reminded me of Sonique and that’s the most interesting thing about her.
Lemon’s entrance quote made me choke I laughed so hard. She’s cute but is gonna get on my nerves fast.
Kyne is super cute but that attitude. GURL. And those balls...
Jimbo. I. Love. Jimbo. I am #TeamJimbo
Overall besides a couple girls, I’m just confused as to the fashion - it mostly all seems very 2010, Drag Race season 2 (at best). And was the lip sync they aired the same one the judges saw? Comments like “this is fire!” And “THAT’S how you lip-sync for your life!” confused TF out of me. But I did enjoy it and can’t wait for next week!
Yes!! They were like “THAT’s how you lip sync.” I’m like, well, one of them clearly did better? And then she said she “danced her ass off” - Momma, ya sat down.
Overall I’m interested in the queens - Boa, Jimbo - enough time watch it and stick around.
But I hate the format. I don’t like having 3 “hosts.” I don’t get, in the event of a tie, who has the final say? At first I thought how is Brooklyn hosting when she didn’t even win, but she won me over by the end. I liked her comments and commentary. Just wish we had just her as a host/judge since the other 2 have no foot in the drag world so they should just be judges and not in the workroom. I also miss a “tough love” judge Michelle. But maybe someone will grow into that roll.
The judges just came off so fake and over the top for no reason. But I really liked the blonde girl and her commentary.
I’m curios to keep watching. And see how it evolves.
Thinking upon it.. I think Brooklyn should be the Tim Gunn (I think Project Runway is the best model for competition shows), but maybe we need someone older who has the experience to be the actual judge.
I really had to think about the hosts/judges thing. It’s different, that’s for sure. But without Ru there, someone who is the ultimate decider, I think it makes sense to do it this way. The thing I found odd was having the guest judge play such a big part in what Ru normally does and then have zero say in the outcome.
Yeah, I don’t like the guest judge doing the Ru bit. It’s all very strange, and needs some ironing out.
I always go back to Project Runway. That’s the best model for a reality competition show. And you need judges you trust and believe. Bowyer was the only one who felt forced and fake and I don’t get why he’s a judge. He has no foot in the fashion/makeup/drag world.
Again, I enjoyed it. But especially looking at Drag Race UK (my absolute favorite season of this show EVER), Canada seems like a couple steps backwards for the franchise.
I always try to pick a queen from the first episode and I really like the uniqueness and quirkiness of Jimbo. Look forward to seeing what else she produces. :)
"I hope your Fanny is bigger than my Peter."
Mary Martin to Ezio Pinza opening night of Fanny.
Whatever Jimbo is selling, I’m buying. What a bizarre weirdo.
I really enjoyed the first episode. The lip sync was... just alright. It’s one of my favorite CRJ songs, so I was disappointed. They made the right choice, but neither Queen was particularly impressive. Thought Juice Boxx’s runway was maybe one of the worst ever on the show. Like, “me cutting up a Hanes t-shirt when I was 5 and tying it around myself like a dress” levels of bad.
The 3-headed judge panel is strange, I gotta say. And none of them felt particularly comfortable. I think they also need to find the line of harsh criticism and constructive criticism. It felt like they were just giving their unfiltered opinion but not necessarily critiques.
I’m excited to see where the season goes. Drag Race UK and Drag Race Thailand have been great specifically because they felt fresh and like a departure from the kind of “over it” attitude generally held by the US queens. I’ve yet to see what distinguishes Canadian queens, but episode 1 was a good time. (And during such a lackluster All Stars season, we need it.)
I'm enjoying the season so far. I think I may be in the minority but I actually quite like that the queens are a little less polished, I enjoy the "crafty" element that sometimes gets lost on the US show.
I will say, however, I'm not a huge fan of the judges/rotating host set up. Don't get me wrong, Jeffrey and Brooke seem like lovely people and they certainly look great but they are the least interesting and most forgettable part of the entire show. I'm not a great admirer of Ru either but at least his schtick is amusing. I wouldn't be mad if Stacey took the front seat going forward, she seems like good fun!
So far my favs are Jimbo and Rita - I also feel like BOA is going to be great tv. Excited to see how the season turns out!
I’m truly obsessed with Jimbo. I don’t know that I would have given her the win, but she had my favorite runway.
It’s hard to judge most of these Drag Race acting challenges because the queens we’ve seen across each season and franchise are - by and large - really horrendous actors. Honestly, this pair of scenes may rank as some of the worst. No one came out looking good.
I’m still waiting to get a read on the other queens. I’m glad Khyne is gone because she wasn’t even the fun kind of delusional.
This was the first episode I can say I just really truly enjoyed. The only thing that had me rolling my eyes was the lip sync that again was so boring Ru might have sent them both home, yet the commentary again is like “THIS IS HOW YOU LIPSYNC! YAAAAS!” which just makes me wonder how boring a Canadian drag show must be.
But Jimbo’s Nancy Grace was amazing. Detox must have been pissed. I’m also falling more and more in love with Boa and Scarlet. Priyanka is great too and she reminds me of someone (an actor, maybe who’s a different race) and it drives me crazy because I can’t place who it is.
I don’t know what these judges are inhaling before judgment, but those critiques were BOOBOO.
Ilona was boring and that outfit was horrible. She’s a mess. I would’ve given the win to Scarlet or Lemon. Definitely not Priyanka. Her runway was not all that.
Tynomi should have gone home. She’s been boring every week and was obviously the worst both last week and this week. I’ve never seen a queen skate by on unrealized potential with absolutely zero personality like this before.
I’m enjoying this season, but some of the choices make me seriously question Canada’s taste levels.
