What do you think are the most romantic lyrics from Broadway songs? Ones that make your heart pitter patter?
I'm fond of these sung by Laurie in Oklahoma!:
"I will come, as evening comes, to woo a waiting sky..."

'Say it Somehow' from Light in the Piazza. The entire thing is so romantic and hopeful and just plain beautiful.
"have i mentioned today
how lucky i am to be in love with you..."
last five years
Carousel has some amazingly romantic lyrics, "If I Loved You" for one. "Love to Me" from Light in the Piazza is incredible also

I love "make someone happy" (I just heard it on the radio like 2 seconds ago.) But Brain Stokes Mitchell could sing anything to me with that voice and I'd be in love too :)

Yeah, I like "Say it Somehow" from Piazza, too. I think my favorite part of it is hearing:
"It's like a melody, like there you go just now."
Particularly the way "melody" is sung.
SAY IT SOMEHOW is incredible. I love the instrumental part right when they start making love. Such an incredible moment.

Yes, that "If I Loved You" from Carousel, especially the heartbreakers:
"Longin' to tell you, but afraid and shy..."

"Love To Me" is the most romantic song.
You're not alone
Now I see as I have never seen before
Since that moment in the square
When your hat is carried in the air
Just so you can chase it
Just so I can be there
This is how I know
This is what I see
This is love to me

Yes, Broadway Betty, and:
"...And do not know that you are beautiful
Or that anyone is watching you..."
"Like you're standing on a mountainside alone
This is what I see
Oh...
You're not alone."

And I like these "Move On" lyrics in Sunday in the Park With George, romantic even if the song is kind of sad:
"Look at all the things you did for me:
Opened up my eyes,
Taught me how to see,
Notice ev'ry tree"
I've never been in love before
Now all at once it's you
It's you forever more.
I've never been in love before
I thought my heart was safe
I thought I knew the score
But this is wine that's all too strange and strong
I'm full of foolish song
And out my song must pour
- Guys and Dolls
It's a little trite, but still quite pretty. I love how that song immediately goes into Sky telling Sarah his real name and then goes into My Time of Day.

From "The Man I Love," these lyrics dive into my emotions:
"And though it seems absurd,
I know we both won't say,
We won't say a word."

"A Small Umbrella in the Rain" -Little Women
"I won't be sweet, won't be demure,
this I prefer this I adore,
I'll speak my mind of that be sure,
I'll be enchanted to the core..."
"Garden Sequence" -Passion
"Love that fills every waking moment,
Love that grows every single day,
Love that thinks everything is pure,
Everything is beautiful
Everything is possible
Love that fuses two into one,
Where we think the same thoughts,
Love the same things
Live as one.
Feel as one.
Breathe as one
Love that shuts away the world
That envelops my soul,
That ennobles my life "

These lyrics from "I Wish I Could Forget You" from Passion are searingly romantic and intellectual at the same time:
"A love as pure as breath
As permanent as death
Implacable as stone.
A love that, like a knife
Has cut into a life
I wanted left alone."
Not necessarily the most pleasant circumstances, but I think "Unworthy of Your Love" from Assassins is beautiful.
I am nothing,
You are wind and water and sky, Jodie.
Tell me, Jodie,
How I can earn your love.
I would swim oceans,
I would climb mountains,
I would do anything for you.
What do you want me to do?
I am unworthy of your love,
Jodie, Jodie,
Let me prove worthy of your love.
Tell me how I can earn your love,
Set me free.
How can I turn your love
To me?

Sung so sweetly to Meg by Young Joe...
From "Near to You" in Damn Yankees:
"For it's just as though
He were standing as close as I.
I know it's hard to imagine, but try;
If he's really dear to you
He's near to you.
You may be far apart and yet
If he's in your heart
Really in your heart
How near to you can he get?"
Another good LITP one - The Beauty Is:
This is wanting something,
This is waiting for it,
This is holding breath and keeping fingers crossed.
All of it's just gorgeous.

Yeah, aegeusrocks, and same song:
"This is almost touching
What the beauty is"

I find these lyrics a good reflection of the feeling of "loss of self," or your individuality that you feel when entering into a romantic relationship. You want it; you don't want it.
From "I Don't Know How to Love Him," J.C. Superstar:
"Yet if he said he loved me
I'd be lost
I'd be frightened
I couldn't cope
Just couldn't cope
I'd turn my head
I'd back away
I wouldn't want to know
He scares me so
I want him so
I love him so"

Everyone's already said this song, but the first verse in "Love to Me" from Piazza is the only part of any song that has ever made me cry from just sheer romance.
"The day we meet
The way you lean against the wind
And do not know that you are beautiful
Or that anyone is watching you
This is what I see"

Eek! I have to get to sleep! What was I thinking; I have to work tomorrow! But this was so much fun...one more from me.
From Evita, the seductive, comedic edge of romantic lyrics from "Charity Concert":
"I don't always rush in like this
Twenty seconds after saying hello
Telling strangers I'm too good to miss
If I'm wrong I hope you'll tell me so
But you really should know
I'd be good for you...
I'm not talking of a hurried night
A frantic tumble then a shy goodbye
Creeping home before it gets too light
That's not the reason I caught your eye
Which has to imply
I'd be good for you
I'd be surprisingly good for you"

I actually like "Fantasies Come true" from Avenue Q for romance....sure it's puppets in bed, but there's a line I think is something like "Gosh, I don't know what to say, I'm really glad you feel that way, cause I'm afraid that I like you more than I've ever liked any guy before..."
It's precious. People would be more likely to say that to each other than anything else.
