American Horror Story: Freak Show Thoughts?

I don’t normally look at this thread because I watched the show one time and found it as awful as everything else Ryan Murphy has ever done, but this made me LOL…

“But, yeah, Sidibe was very flat. And that wig!”

…because I’m imagining you say it like Johnny in “Airplane!”

American Horror Story: Freak Show Thoughts?

Just watched this weeks episode and LOVED it. I think they just keep getting stronger and stronger as the season goes on...

*SPOILERS*

Was anybody else super disturbed after seeing what Penny's father did to her? And I was also so sad about La Petite (?) dying.

I thought the stuff with Penny is one of the scariest things I've seen in the show. I was genuinely disturbed, which happens maybe once or twice a season in AHS.
Oh, and yeah, I pretty much figured out Gabourey Sidibe can't act the second she uttered a line in the awful THE BIG C pilot (though my suspicions were initially raised when she bombed on SNL with the same flat, "I'm delivering lines" line readings). She just doesn't know how to deliver dialogue.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Is it just me, or does Dandy remind anyone else of a massively demented Reggie Mantle (from the Archie comics)?

I've given up. I missed the last two weeks because when 10pm hits, I just would rather choose South Park.

"Is it just me, or does Dandy remind anyone else of a massively demented Reggie Mantle (from the Archie comics)?"

Absolutely.

As for the post JC linked about why AHS should end--I think his overall point is valid (though sometimes I *almost* feel sorry for Ryan Murphy--all the stories and tropes he reuses mentioned--except from Popular--are from shows co-created with Brad Falchuk who is never mentioned or blamed. Of course this is partly because Brad likes keeping quiet, and Ryan is a media whore--and many of the problems probably are Ryan's, but...)

However, I thought most ofthe examples given (mostly) were not major ones I have issue with with Murphy's shows, and some seem pushing it (honestly, I didn't even remember the song in Nip/Tuck apparently was born with lobster-boyhands.)

This season is far from horrible. It gets better every week, and may end up being my favorite season to date. It's leagues above COVEN. Loving it!

But sauseech his own.

^ Agree. I love this season, and all of the characters. So much better than the boring first half of the second season or the entire third.

I'm liking this season but not sure yet which one is my favorite. I miss Twisty (as well as, already, Ma Petite), and if I could buy a licensed life-sized window decal of Meep (complete with "meep!" word balloon) to display in the back windshield of my car, I so totally would. I don't think it's the best show on tv, nor am I sure what is or if I can even judge that past what my own personal taste dictates; as Bugs Bunny said, "One man's meat is another man's poison." (I know the quote goes back farther than Looney Tunes, but I've seen that cartoon far too many times.)

What I enjoy even more than the show though are Price Peterson's photo recaps/reviews. I can't remember if it was someone here on BWW who first led me to his recaps, but who/how/wherever I was led there, I'm grateful. They are excellent. Latest one, the caption with Penny, "Is it Friday yet?" -- I died dead.

It's miles better than Coven. I have no clue though how much praise that is...

I almost feel bad for my old crush Finn Whitrock saying that he was only going to have one episode but Ryan Murphy saw his performance and decided to build his character...

I was about to give up on Asylum midway through and then I thought they somehow made things work (I still give credit to the fact that Tim Minear was showrunner that year.) But I do agree the show is quickly running out of steam--before the horrific Penny stuff the last episode was like Passions with better actors, and episode 6 had nothing going for it at all.

Still it hasn't gone back against quite EVERY rule it worked hard to establish like Coven.

And I do agree with JC's link in one key way. I love Lange. I am tired of her playing essentially nice or mean versions of the same character (often on the same season.) I know she doesn't plan to come back, but if she does, I hope it's in some completely different kind of character. But that will never happen with the men behind this show. Murphy is saying the series are all connected--my guess is that Lansbury plays some tormented demon who tries but can't adapt to each era she's thrown into.

I've been with you from the beginning, Jordan. I enjoyed the first two seasons as a guilty pleasure, but found Coven to be truly horrendous. Freak Show wasn't much better.

American Horror Story: Freak Show Thoughts?

It's easily the least frightening the show has ever been, but I'm still enjoying it, if for no other reasons than the performances. But, like last year, it does seem to be meandering around for an actual story. Here's hoping, though it's highly unlikely, that something gets shaken up in the formula.

However, if Ryan Murphy wants to keep showing us naked Finn Wittrock and Evan Peters, I can live with that.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Besides some of the first season, the show has never been scary. Maybe a tad suspenseful in a few moments in season 2, but never scary. This season is just so STUPID and even worse, infuriatingly boring. But I agree, if they just change it to the two of them bare ass all the time, I'd be fine with that.

See, the first season didn't really work on me, but mostly because once I figured out they were dead the whole time I got so bored because I didn't see how the characters didn't realize that. I think more the subject matter of Asylum was what scared me- I'm cool with ghost stories, but Catholicism and serial killers? That's scary.

Looking back, it really is a shame they got rid of Twisty. I think Dandy is the most interesting character on the show by a mile, but he isn't genuinely scary in the way that clown was.

Last night I almost turned it off because I realized that at long last I was finally over it. I stuck out the episode, and I guess I'll finish the season, but this is the most tediously plotted season ever. I did think it started out generally scary, but it's fallen into the same patterns of nonsense each season does.

Oh, I know. This one just seemed to start out more solidly than the others, so I guess that made me optimistic.

I've never seen prior seasons to compare this to. I didn't even decide to watch this. The husband put it on. I'm watching with him because he is interested in it. Turns out that I'm actually finding it amusing and wished that I paid more attention to it several episodes back. I'm enjoying the Side Show plots. I don't find it even the slightest bit scary.
