Touchme--I'm here at work with a WGA member, and he didn't get Dreamgirls. Mom's in SAG, and she didn't get it.
Who did? DGA? PGA?
And Munk--I do think some people got off their asses and saw it in a theatre. Enough to get the nods they did. And I understand they sent out CDs to the music people (which would help possibly explain the 3 songs)...
...and I'm not saying that some voters didn't care for it. But if you mix the "I don't cares" in with the "I didn't see its" you've got enough to push it out of the running, obviously.
just a note, justagirl. Susan Lucci finally won a couple of years ago, so, she eventually got to be the bride.

"Lucci finally won a couple of years ago, so, she eventually got to be the bride."
But she SURE as HELL didn't wear white!
Apparently BAFTA got it, so says a member of BAFTA here.
BAFTA?
I'd love to know if anyone else got it besides the Brits.
So far (based solely on personal responses, and Ms. Collins' TV comment) the answer's "no."
You're right! Thanks!
really pissed about dreamgirls

I thought Dreamgirls would be nominated too but I guess we can never tell with the Oscars. They don't beat to the other awards show's drums so you can never be too confident as to who will be nominated.
I just want Martin Scorsese to win finally!
Well...sorry?
I have to say, I feel a bit of schadenfreude for the fact that Dreamgirls wasn't nominated. While I really enjoyed the movie, I'm not sure it deserved *all* the hype it was getting. Murphy and Hudson were the standouts to me (as they were to most everyone), and as long as they're recognized, I'm OK.
I know I'm just pouting...
...but I think I would have gotten over it a lot quicker if Paramount/DreamWorks hadn't seriously dropped the ball with the screener.
So now I'm pouting AND pissed!
Instead of just good, old-fashioned, American pouting.
You're justagirl2 after my own heart!
Usually, there's one person I root for each year and this year it just happens to be Jennifer Hudson. I'm satisfied that she got her nomination.
Dreamgirls still has a lot to promote and "crow" about in their campaign and on their key art...
"The film that garnered eight Academy Award nominations, more than any other film this year..."
Crap like that.
Plus they'll be pushing Hudson and Murphy big-time.
But you know what I have a big problem with?
These Academy members that take everything so seriously (apparently) yet if they don't get the free DVD in the mail, they won't watch the film?
Well you know what? If I were in the Academy and I didn't get a DVD in the mail, I would get off my ass and go to the theatre (and I'd probably pay for it to) and see the film.
It really pisses me off. "Oh, I didn't vote for it because I didn't get the DVD." THEN GET OFF YOUR ASS AND GO SEE THE DAMN MOVIE.
I'm pulling for Borat and Arkin...I know they probably will lose, but I always go for the underdog.

Screeners or not, I am still really shocked Dreamgirls didn't get the BP nod.
I'm rooting for Scorsese. The Departed is his best film since Goodfellas. I'm still not completely sold on a victory, because this man is really unlucky at the Oscars.
If I were a voting member of the Academy, my ballot would be:
BP: The Departed
Director: Scorsese
Actor: Whitaker
Actress: Dench
Supporting Actor: Wahlberg
Supporting Actress: Blanchett
*Not predictions, by any means.
What, no Streep, PJ?

This is how it will go and how it should have gone:
Picture - Iwo Jima Should be: - Pan's Labyrinth!
Director - Martin Scorsese Should be: Guillermo del Torro
Actress: Mirren Should Be: Mirren
Actor: Whitaker Should Be: Gosling
Supporting Actor: Murphy Should Be: Jackie Earle Haley
Supporting Actress: Hudson Should be: Rinko Kikuchi!!!!!
Didn't Kikuchi show her coochie? It that doesn't get the voter's (to stand at) attention, I don't know what will.
Yeah, you see her big hairy beaver. she's brilliant in it, though.
I think Peter O'Toole will win.

I obviously loved Streep in Prada. However, Judi Dench delivers a an hour and a half master class in Notes on a Scandal. She goes through every emotion you can think of, and you feel for her character. You feel for her even though she is at times a bit creepy in her pursuit of Blanchett. I've said this before and I'll say it again--Helen Mirren does not deserve an Oscar in my opinion. At least not for this particular film. I went in to the The Queen expecting to see a fantastic performance, and I wanted to take a nap half way through it. I realize that you can't deliver a performance full of fireworks when you're playing that particular character, but I just didn't get all the hype. Still don't. I'm sure she'll win, though.
I went to see Babel again two nights ago. I have to say, I enjoyed it a lot more this time around. The theatre had a decent sized crowd, and I happen to notice that many of them had the same trouble I did in round one. The movie is hard to sit through. It's one of those films that fares better on DVD because you can stop it at anytime and go back. Babel tells an intriguing story, but it's not necessarily the most entertaining film for today's audiences. Many people were noticeably bored and uninterested, which is what the the audience was like the first time I saw it.
Best Supporting Actress should go to Blanchett. I've seen Dreamgirls twice, once at a screening in November, and then again just a few weeks ago. The first time around, I loved Hudson's performance. I thought for sure she deserved the Oscar. Then, I saw Notes on a Scandal, twice, and realized that anyone who can go toe-to-toe, figuratively and literally, with Dench in that movie, deserves a hell of a lot more than just a nomination. Cate absolutely swallows Dench up during their big fight scene, and her entire performance is jawdroppingly good. These are the kind of performances that should be awarded. But back to Hudson: The second time I saw the film, I realized how amateur-like the performance truly was. Vocally, she's a f*%#ing powerhouse. But there are moments when she fell flat, in my opinion. Particularly in the second half of the film. And there is no doubt in my mind that Bill Condon babied and coddled her until he got exactly what he wanted. If she wins, that Oscar should have Condon's name on it as well. I'm not completely against Hudson winning. It would be a fine ending to her "Cinderella-like" story. And just like Mirren, I'm sure she'll win.

PJ...
First of all, I fell asleep during THE QUEEN.
Secondly, thank you for saying "uninterested" instead of "disinterested."
And thirdly, what was your opinion of Kikuchi?

Yeah, that post needs to be edited right now. It just ruined the entire thread.
In regards to both the Babel ladies: I wasn't blown away by either of them. Rinko left me feeling a little cold. And Adriana was good, I suppose. If I had to vote for one or the other, I would go with Adriana Barraza. But like I said before, Blanchett deserves to take home her second gold guy this year.

I also loved Dench in "Notes on a Scandal" but let's face it. The Dame has moved herself into the same category as Meryl Streep. She will never win an onother oscar because the people, studios, academy and anyone who has eyes can tell these women could do this in their sleep.
Mirren was outstanding in "The Queen". A master performance. I hate when people assume someone has to chew the scenery to qualify good acting. Her performance is quiet and sublime. She deserves every award she gets. Blanchett was great in "Scandal" but the role was not a real departure for her (as far as range). Kikuchi was incredible. Such a strange and fascinating performance. Let's not forget Adriana Barraza, who gave Babel its heart.
