I think eastwood made a better film, so I'd rather see Eastwood win, but Scorcese will win (or my name isn't touchmeinthemorning).
Spider, I do agree. I've never seen a movie yet to have applause at the end. That has got to say something!
Does anyone know if DREAMGIRLS set an Academy record for the most nominations without a Best Picture nod?
Quite often I see movies where the audience applauses at the end.
Most recently, Pan's Labyrinth.
Well, that's great. I was just saying I haven't seen it happen before.
I know.
I wasn't trying to be snarky at all.
I just found it interesting that DREAMGIRLS is the first movie wheresome people have witnessed applause.
I enjoyed 'Dreamgirls' but wasn't blown away by it. In the end, I think the Academy has acknowledged the parts that deserve it (Murphy, Hudson, the songs) and looked past the rest of it, pretty much like I did. It wasn't nearly as effective as the stage show in utilizing the music as both show songs and the pop songs of the era and he avoided showing the singers to a fault.
Oh, that's cool.
Even when I went and "Chicago" three times in the theaters, no one applauded at the end. **shrugs shoulders**
I heard applause in CROUCHING TIGER, MOULIN ROUGE, FARENHEIT 9/11, BROKEBACK...
Yes, DREAMGIRLS is the first time in Oscar history where the leading nominations tally doesn't include a Best Picture nomination. Its also the first time since 1927 that the Best Picture lineup doesn't include a single Best Actor nominee.
people clapped after Brokeback?

"people clapped after Brokeback?"
Please, please, PLEASE don't go there . . .
Where? I just didn't think it was a movie worthy of clapping.

I'm just referring to BROKEBACK discussion in general. Kind of OD'd on it last year
I'm actually pretty excited about all of Little Miss Sunshine's noms (but totally shocked at the same time!) I really didn't think that they'd recognize Abigale Breslin or Alan Arkin.
Ryan Gosling for Half Nelson is a shocker too. Great film, but...
Absolutely pulling for Scorcese to FINALLY win for directing.
Gosling really isn't a shocker at all...
I don't think there was actually applause at the end of DREAMGIRLS when I went, only after a couple musical numbers.
I saw THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND again last night, and all 6 of us clapped afterwards. And when I saw VENUS, many people gave a healthy ovation for that as well - while dancing to Corinne Bailey Rae's "Put Your Records On." It was funny.
I find that applause at the end of movies is more common at smaller movies in NYC. I don't know that I've ever seen it in the burbs where I grew up.
since when does applause merit an oscar nomination?
....i'm just asking.
It doesn't. I was just stating that I never witnessed it before (well, clapping I have). Both audiences I saw it with, gave it a standing ovation. But, anyway . . .

Threadjack - DJ - love the icon! I know I could have sent that PM, but I want others to notice it, too
It's definitely a feel good, crowd pleasing movie.
Haha. Thanks, DG!
Some of yous should avoid IMDb -- they're ripping the movie and Hudson apart over there!
Which means I need to get over to IMDB to see the snark!
I surfed over there a couple weeks ago to read the boards. Don't waste your time - they are all incredibly immature, they all have HORRID taste.
They're a bunch of children, and if you read those boards for more than a couple days, you realize that it's just a big waste of time.
And the difference would be....?
