I'm sticking by my predictions, sentiment or not.
SUNSHINE won the PGA and is the only film in the line-up with RABID fans--it's a Sundance success story and has shown to have remarkable legs. And they have ALL seen it. But I think BABEL could win as long as they don't feel like they're voting for CRASH again.
SCORCESE will win because Leo is waging a campaign for him much like Julia Roberts did for Denzel when he won for TRAINING DAY. And what sense would it make to give 3 to Clint? John Ford he's not. Greengrass I think has the real outside shot here.
O'Toole--He's getting great press, Whitaker plays a villain, the Academy is still a bunch of old folks, and the young hip faction will vote for Gosling.
Mirren-nuff said
ARKIN-I think he's due, he's frequently on the short list for awards, he's in a Best Pic nom, and Murphy has been openly critical of the Academy in the past. Remember, it was a few years before Hoffman won his Oscar too.
HUDSON-nuf said...though if they say Rinko, don't be shocked.

I personally find Scorcese remarkable. I think Taxi Driver is one of the most psychologically disturbing films ever made by an American director, Mean Streets is stunningly intense, After Hours is a very funny romp, King of Comedy and Alice Doesn't Live are high underrated, Goodfellas has a dazzling visual style and is one of the best films of that decade and Raging Bull is a masterpiece. I'm happy he's been recognized here and while The Departed doesn't break any new ground and is little more than a well-made entertaining genre picture, I wouldn't mind seeing it win.
Now that you have gone all but ignored every time, you still feel the need to come back and act like you are somehow more human, smarter, or more couth becuase you don't care about the Oscars?
Wow, aren't we insecure! It was a serious question. I just don't get it, and was hoping someone could explain it to me. I'll take that as a "no", then.
Maybe, Lildogs:
But..I think people will come to their senses regarding LMS. Its true that not enough comedies have been nominated (or won) the Best Picture Oscar, but I think voters will realize how silly it will look in 10 years when people look back and see that LMS won Best Picture. Its just too slight a movie. It's just not good enough a movie.
And a small pocket of rabid fans are enough to secure a BP nomination but not enough to secure a win. MOULIN ROUGE is a very good example of that.
I don't think Leo has enough clout in Hollywood to get Scorsese an Oscar. I do think he's still the frontrunner but I just think having Eastwood suddenly very in the game is going to give people an excuse NOT to vote for him.
And JIMA is NOT MILLION DOLLAR BABY. Of all the nominees, it probably is the film that will best stand the test of time.

Margo - you CERTAINLY aren't alone in your thoughts - I just don't be one of those who agree. Ultimately, I just don't think he tells a story very well. There's all these fabulous elements, but they never add up to a cohesive whole for me.
Except for RAGING BULL - I concede that one (Yay, Cathy Moriarity! )
I think MB did a fine job of expalining it, you jsut aren't paying attention.

James Taylor wrote the CARS song - does he have an Oscar yet?
The Cars song was performed by James Taylor, but the music and lyrics are by Randy Newman, who finally won an Oscar in 2002 for a song from Monsters, Inc., after a total of 16 nominations over the years. I really hope one of the Dreamgirls songs wins over the Cars song.
MB: You're right. In 20 years from now, MILLION DOLLAR BABY (and THE DEPARTED, frankly) will fade away. IWO JIMA will become one of those classics.
Rosie just said on The View that she's an Oscar voter. They just offered her membership when she started doing films?
To answer your question, JB2, it all boils down to vicarious living. Watching the Oscars and rooting for your favorite actor et al is analogous to Watching the Super Bowl and rooting for the home team.

I've never been a fan of Eastwood's, but I think Iwo Jima is -- along with Pan's Labyrinth -- easily the best film I saw this year and wouldn't mind seeing it pull an upset.
I'm pretty happy with the nominations, especially Mirren, Breslin, Arkin, Hudson, Murphy, and the general support of Little Miss Sunshine.
I see what you're saying, MB, but we disagree in a HUGE way about LMS--and that's all there is to it...I thought it was much better than you obviously did. It may be a "small" movie, but hardly slight. I think it has alot of unsettling truths about how we raise children in this country, how we treat our elders and what success means. It also has a very subtle through-line about addiction. We just don't like the same movies I guess.
And I agree about SANDS being the film that will likely last, but since when has that mattered? Why, even last year's choice will seem dated in 10 years.
I also think MR probably almost won--it'll certainly win the test of time, I'll wager. It was also such a unique piece that I'm sure many voters turned it off before it was done--can you imagine Mickey Rooney picking MR over ABM?
I do think Leo has the clout to get Marty his Oscar---he still has the looks to draw any kind of publicity he wants and he's a box office giant. He just got his 3rd Oscar nod-I think he's riding pretty high and can take Marty with him.
I also agree with Margo about Marty's career--I think he's a real master filmmaker and his films are always well-made if nothing else. And sometimes it IS nothing else.

Well, thanks for the explanation SM2; but, I just don't see the comparison to a sporting event where, for the most part, a person or a team wins, because they do the best job at the sport. These acting awards aren't that at all, just a popularity contest, among some voting members. If the public was voting, then I'd get it. But, whatever.
Can we type movie titles instead of abbreviations? I'm having a difficult time translating.
What are:
SANDS
MR
ABM

I'm thinking SANDS is referring to LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA (although Sands of Iwo Jima was an old John Wayne movie)
MOULIN ROUGE, BEAUTIFUL MIND,
Whoops--Sorry, I did mean LETTERS--damn that TCM!!
And yes, MR was Moulin Rouge and ABM was A Beautiful Mind--thought my references made that clear but I guess not.

What's bizarre is that I immediately knew that you were referring to the current Iwo Jima film -- too much TCM for me too!
JB2: Sports fans don't contribute to their team's victory any more than movie fans do. It's all about vicariously living (as I said before), having someone to root for.
I cannot believe that Volver was shut out of the best foreign film race. I thought it was excellent.
And I just watched the actual announcement via msnbc. Is it just me, or did Salma seem like she got upset when VOLVER wasn't nominated for best foreign film?
oh she was definately upset. She dropped down and missed her cue to start the Best Picture noms.
Maybe because of her affinity for Penelope Cruz, but VOLVER is of course a film from Spain; Hayak is Mexican - so it can't be a country loyalty thing.
well her reaction to penelope's nomination shows why she was upset.
I know that. Did you see the accouncement? Go to msnbc and fast forward. It looks like she's about to cry.
The MSNBC video is not loading for me. I mean, the audio is fine, but I can't see anything. What gives?
ETA: Never mind. I got it to work now.
