I'm just so happy that DREAMGIRLS got pushed out of the Best Picture race.
All the other films are far superior.
It got the nods it deserves.
And the reason it has the most nods, 8, and still got shut out of best picture is partly because 3 of its nods came for Best Song.
DREAMGIRLS is good entertainment, but is not a good MOVIE.
The Academy got it right in this case times 10000.
i just watched for the second time on Good mOrning America.
Martin Scorcese does not need Leonardo DiCaprio's help.
Well, he might, marty hasn't been able to get it done on his own yet.
That's hasn't stopped him from being the most prolific director of his time.
Woody, for better or worse (lately worse) has WAY more films to his credit than Marty.

Hayek was interviewed afterwards and said that she found out all of the nominees several minutes prior to them going live and was so overcome with emotion -- ecstatic for Cruz, del Toro and Inarittu, who are all friends and sad that there were no nominations for Volver and Almodovar -- that she was weeping and had to reapply her make-up before she went on camera.

He'll go down in history as the best of those who never won if he doesn't win this year. Keep in mind that his previous lack of wins isn't a fluke. He lost to great films:
1981- Raging Bull (lost to Robert Redford: Ordinary People);
1989- The Last Temptation of Christ (lost to Barry Levinson: Rain Man);
1991- Goodfellas (lost to Kevin Costner: Dances with Wolves);
2003- Gangs of New York (lost to Roman Polanski: The Pianist);
2005- The Aviator (lost to Clint Eastwood: Million Dollar Baby)
I just want Al Gore to win -- and to return as a presenter the next year. I mean, Hillary Clinton already won a Grammy.

I'd have picked Raging Bull and Goodfellas over their competitors in a heartbeat, not to mention Taxi Driver which wasn't even nominated the year that Rocky won (also beating out Network and All the President's Men).

Raging Bull was his first time up, and they rarely win their first time up -- even if they deserve to.
I think Goodfellas was seen as the only competition for Wolves that year. And Wolves won because of its epic feel. I would've voted for Wolves, too -- it was a bigger project that required more "direction" than Goodfellas.
Taxi Driver should've been nominated, for sure.
I think Salma got choked up presenting the Best Picture nominees because director Iñárritu and writer Arriaga (BABEL) are Mexican. Personally, I don't like how she handled herself, especially after Penélope's name was announced. It just seemed... unprofessional.
BTW: Is it just me or did Salma appear embarrassed for BORAT's adapted screenplay nomination? Some people off camera could be heard snickering, too.
And what's up with some of the nominees not getting applause (i.e. O'Toole, Smith, Hounsou)? It felt awkward.
Taxi Driver was nominated Margo.

Personally, I never cared for Dances With Wolves. I thought Goodfellas was far superior. It's actually one of my all-time favorite movies.

I was referring to the fact that Scorcese was snubbed as Best Director for Taxi Driver, not about whether or not the film was nominated.
Ah, I understand.
what . . . What . . . WHAT?!?!?!
How in HELL did "Dreamgirls" not get a nom. for best picture? I have never been in a theater where at the end people have a standing ovation (both times I have went) and walked out telling others waiting outside the door that it was "amazing" and that "they are going to love it." I think "Dreamgirls" is leaps and bounds better than "Chicago" (Which I love). Also, it won "Best Picture Comedy/Musical" at the Golden Globes. I just . . . I just . . . **cries**
I'm really hoping that Scorcese pulls out a win for Director. The Departed was a great film. To be fair, I haven't seen Iwo Jima... Eastwood's work tends not to be my style. I don't feel that it's a sentimental nomination at all, since it was the best-directed thing I saw this year.
I'm so surprised that DiCaprio is nominated for Blood Diamond -- a decent enough film, but with moments of distinctly poor writing and acting that failed to rise above that. I thought that he gave a much more solid performance in The Departed.
"Raging Bull was his first time up, and they rarely win their first time up -- even if they deserve to. "
It's ironic you said that, as he lost to two first-time directors: Redford and Costner!

I agree about Leo, sweetest.
But, the Academy likes their actors to use accents from strage foreign lands like Europe and South Africa. And most have no idea if they're done well or not*.

Very true, lildogs. The exceptions are the actor-turned-director. They eat that up.
The Academy Awards are a big popularity contest. It has never had anything to do with quality. Scorcese has always lost because he is a New York based director who has never been part of the Hollywood in crowd.
If he wins this year, it will be because he has accumulated such a massively impressive body of work, the AMPAS will basically feel forced into a wall to give it to him.
There is a reason why Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson, Warren Beatty, Clint Eastwood have all won Best Director Oscars and Scorcese hasn't. And it has nothing to do with craft!
is boston not strange and foreign enough?
yes, touchme, but it IS ironic.
With Kubrick, Welles, Chaplin, Hitch, Vidor, Hawks, Lang, Murnau, Lubitsch and Altman (to mention just a few) Scorcese's in WAY better company being a loser....
So let's keep him there for this year.
