"I'm not thrown off by the time change. When you have a woman named Norma, she's bound to be old fashioned."

I am having a hard time following this.

sO - The opening scene, w/the husband dead on the floor and Norma w/that weird look in her eyes, and Norman screaming. Do we know why she (obviously) killed the husband (that backstory)?

We've got a Farmiga. Did the CF girl happen to have Downs Sydrome?

I don't get all the fuss about the timeline. PSYCHO was set in the present. It wasn't a period piece when the book was written or the movie was filmed. I like that the Hitchcock film was used as a framework, but setting the series in the present makes perfect sense to me. And even if doesn't, is it so hard to suspend belief, sit back, relax and enjoy the series on its own merits? Personally, I thought it was very well done. And the two leads were exceptional. I also read that the series starts off a bit slow and then really takes off around episode 3. I'll definitely be watching!

"...makes perfect sense to me. And even if doesn't..."

It's right at that intersection I start having trouble.

It seems to be the thing now for the networks to tell us everything starts getting good at episode three.

"It seems to be the thing now for the networks to tell us everything starts getting good at episode three."

It wasn't the network saying it. It was a couple of critics who were given the first 3 episodes to view. Anyway... time will tell. I was intrigued and entertained enough by the pilot to give it a chance.

I really don't see how the time shift is confusing people or putting people off? It's very strange to me. Parts of it do feel very Twin Peaks as I said since some scenes feel very period, I don't think they should have mentioned the year though. Did anyone else notice how much the sherif guy looked like Anthony Perkins? (just a bit more buff) it was a little creepy.

I just found this in one of the countless Vulture preview articles:

"I’m torn between condemning the series for piggybacking on a classic and promising an origin story it doesn’t really care to deliver, and praising it for avoiding the homicidal Muppet Babies formula and pulling a pretty brazen bait-and-switch."

Yes. I feel the phrase "bait-and-switch" nails it.

"PSYCHO was set in the present."

The movie came out in 1960. So if what we have now is the "backstory," doesn't that mean "what happened before?". For me, it would be much more believable if this was true to the timeline of Psycho, which would mean that if Norman is about 17, it would be about mid 1940's or so. Makes more sense to me, and seeing him maturing in the 2013 is ridiculous. I'm not buying it as the backstory.

I"m watching this series anyway.

Even the Chorus Line Playbills eventually said Time: 1975 rather than Time: Now.

Although I love this metaphysical notion of the Bates Motel existing in a constantly refreshing state of contemporaneity. It's like the string theory of homicidal maniacs.

Actually, it would be mid 50's, wouldn't it? Wasn't Norman just in his early 20's in the film?

Is "a prequel of sorts" like being "a little bit pregnant"?

If it's its own thing, then why make it about Norman, his mother, and the Bates Motel at all?

No not like being a little bit pregnant, it's a prequel to what will happen ten years down the road from when the tv series is set, not a prequel to the movie. It makes sense to me but I understand if some people can't make that jump. I think it's its own thing in the sense that the home, motel, and characters are familiar to us, but the show is putting a different and fresh spin on it.

I get you don't like it. I wasn't born yesterday. Your posts about it have been pretty entertaining actually. ("More entertaining than this show!" is what you're maybe thinking. lol)

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Then it's what used to be known as a remake?

To me, a reboot just means starting the exact same story over again. Either with an anomaly in the time/space continuum or because the entertainment industrial complex knows that there is an audience for a story they have just heard being told exactly the same way but by different people.

If we were to call this a remake because it starts at a different age for the protagonist then it makes a BIT more sense to me. However, why not give the motel an all new look? Why painstakingly recreate the same old same old? Why build the walls of the house on the hill and add computer graphic roof in every single frame? Why not have a Norman, have a motel, have a house, but change more than where the door in the kitchen is? They could have saved even more money.

Namo, we get it, you don't like the time change, it doesn't make it a prequel blah blah blah. Moving on. Thanks Jbarafan for posting that link
