I just love when you get "that way" DG. I happen to agree with you, loving everything about this film should not be an expectation just because one is gay. Only time will show how signigicant a film it is or isn't.
When did THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST stop being the most successful Independent film ever made?

Good point, Brendan. No matter what anyone may feel about it, it can't be ignored.
The Passion of the Christ or Brendan?
I saw it. I liked it but didn't love it. I do think it is good film making but I didn't think it was "the end-all-be-all." I expected to be moved more but I didn't really feel anything until the very end right before the credits. I thought Michelle Williams gave an excellent performance. Ann Hathaway's wigs were out of control.
I feel the SAME way, Tom, but what IS amazing is how the films resonates with one days after.

After having taken a couple of days to let this film sink in, I have to just write the most basic review possible:
This is the best film of the year. Go see it.
Thank you for the apology David. It was very hurtful to be attacked that way. Having reread my posting, I cannot find anything in it that would have justified your cruel and insensitive words. Though I have very strong and yes political opinions, I do not believe that I have ever attacked anyone personally on this board as you have attacked me. In fact, I always try to be polite, even while expressing feelings which admittedly are stronger than ever as attacks on gay people by the "religious" right become increasingly strident and full of lies. The apology is accepted, but the slap of those angry and uncalled for words remains.

You'll both always have....Brokeback Mountain...
I'm interested in hearing a heterosexual take on the movie.
I plan on seeing the film again on Wednesday...I have some VERY conflicted thoughts on it and want to see it one more time before I make any sort of pronouncement of those thoughts.

SOMMS,
Well aren't 99% of the major critics -- who have given the film 4 stars and "A" ratings -- heterosexual?
Dan Dunn in the NY Daily Metro loved it--and he's a raging, sexy hetero. :)
Yes Margo. I wasn't looking for reviews, rather impressions.
I didn't cry until two days after seeing it. It snuck up on me from behind. Well, you know what i mean...

Not the first time something's snuck up on you from behind and you've ended up crying, huh, Middie?
I'm hoping that's my reaction...or that I can re-appraise after seeing it again on Wednesday...if not...there are gonna be A LOT of fags not happy with me. I'll have to give back my card!
It's ok, robbie--I'm also hoping after a second viewing I will love it more. I felt like the hype got me. I did think it was a good film.
Oh, Robbie, this is why we're all human! We sometimes like things, we sometimes don't.
I can objectively see why some people, even gay men, won't love this film. But I can tell you VERY specifically, from story to cinematography to acting, why I loved it.
So if you know why you didn't like it, why would I take issue?
Except, of course, that you're undermining the very war on fundamentalism and possibly destroying the future of homosexuals in America.
But I mean other than that.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN dominates the New York Critics Circle picks:
Best Picture: Brokeback Mountain
Best Director: Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain
Best Actor: Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
(The rest are
Best Actress: Reese Witherspoon, Walk The Line
Best Supporting Actor: William Hurt, A History of Violence
Best Supporting Actress: Maria Bello, A History of Violence
Best Animated Film: Howl's Moving Castle
Best Screenplay: The Squid and the Whale
Best Documentary: Grizzly Man and White Diamond
Best Foreign Film: 2046
Best Cinematography: 2046
Best First Film: Capote )
With both the LA and NY critics won over, I think it's safe to say that BROKEBACK is the front runner for the Oscar, and Ang Lee is pretty much guaranteed that long-overdue Best Director award.

FYI -- The DGAs are announced January 5th.
Again, bluey, Sideways won most all critic awards last year...
GG are tomorrow!
And, from what I could see, the only bad audience reviews on yahoo were bigots. It wil be interesting to see if non-bigots will review the film as badly.
Personally, I would prefer the film to be a commercial success over a critical success.

JRB, I don't understand why you feel the need to second-guess yourself. Why not accept your original impression instead of forcing yourself to 'love' it? It's a helluva lot more honest and refreshing than subscribing to received opinion like a desperate camp-follower.
