Assuming they're not just money-grubbing opportunists. Why on earth wouldn't you pull your child out and put them into a religious private school after the first traumatizing incident rather than risk another "distressing" exposure? I mean you're bound to see and hear some inappropriate things in a public school environment.

I saw Goodfellas in school when I was 13 or 14.
I'm not f***in' scarred, you mothaf***in' son of a b****! What? I'll have ya f***in' whacked, that's what! You know what? F*** you!
See? I'm f***in' poifect.
I want to know what book it was.

I highly doubt the claims of psychological harm, but it definitely wasn't wise to show an R movie to a bunch of kids without permission, no matter what the subject matter. We watched Schindler's List in high school, but we all had to get a permission slip signed by our parents.
Stupidity all around.
see? them gays want to indoctrinate the chillens into the man-love when they's barely old enough to be learnin' 'bout self-love. clearly, this sub is a member of the "homersectional baby-boy indoctrination brigades of the worldwide society for the proliferation of butt love."
given how sexually active kids are today, it's entirely possible that the scene where the mumbler nails the hottie* in the pooper could have given the student's bf (oh yeah, pun intended baby) ideas that left her packed tight, y'know what i'm sayin'? if that's the case, then she's totally got a case.
* for the record "hottie" refers to the dawson's creek trailer park princess looker, not donnie darko.

The Bible? That book is full of sex, intrigue, murder, sci fi and all that stuff.

But really, unless the book was by Harold Robbins or something, I can't imagine it was less appropriate than BM. Even if the dipsh*t sub didn't show the sex scenes, anyone with any sense would have known that the movie was bound to cause trouble when shown to a class of eighth graders.
Regardless of the film or book, the guardians gave warning that their child was not to be exposed to improper material and that child should have been excused from the class that day and sent to the library. I think they have a very good chance of winning this case. Chicago Public Schools are the worstest. Any child who can afford to be in a private school probably is already.
In eighth grade, all we got to watch was Gone With the Wind. What is the statute of limitations on emotional scarring?
Emotional scarring from having to witness Anne Hathaway's hair and makeup in BROKEBACK I understand and worth every penny of the lawsuit, but this is absurd.
It turns out the girl has a speech impediment and it was Ledger's insensitive performance that caused the distress.

Haha. I agree 100% Borstal. Her hair terrified me. It was one of the worst parts of the movie, and I thought the whole thing stank.
The poor little thing wakes up in the middle of the night screaming "TRITE!"
They are all dipsh*ts. The teacher who showed the film. The grandparents. The girl. People are so quick to sue in this country, it's crazy.
When I was in 7th grade one of my teachers got permission to show us Dances With Wolves, as long as she fast forwarded through the parts where you see Kevin Costner's naked butt.
Meh, we watch R-rated stuff all the time and no one's ever complained. We watched the whole of Bowling for Columbine and Network (there's some fairly explicit sexual stuff in there) and a few other films. No one's ever sued anyone, even if we didn't have permission slips to watch them.
At the same time, if the teacher was going to show something r-rated, she should have at least made sure that the film had something to diwht academics som that she could AT LEAST have a reason.
In any case, if the film was that scarring the kid should have left the room. I seriously doubt there was anything THAT emotionally scarring in Brokeback mountain. Then again, I guess I'm not the little girl, so whatever.
I am a little surprised they showed ANY R-Rated film; that being said, in the 8th grade, I did book reports on MOMMIE DEAREST & FATAL ATTRACTION, so there you go.
I find it hard to believe that there werent some a**hole hetero boys in the classroom screaming in protest during the opening credits. It's not like the content of brokeback mountain is a secret. Everyone who hasn't seen it knows its the "gay cowboy movie" I cant see straight 8th grade boys being cool with that. This whole thing sounds like a massive collaborative setup/ scheme.
Good point wickedfieyro. The boys in my 10th grade class still make jokes about the idea of Brokeback Mountain. My director (the good one) lovingly calls them ****faces.
But it's true. SHE'S the only one who's complaining? Unless the entire class was made up of homosexual boys or oddly tolerant 8th grade boys (let's face it, there are maybe 3 tolerant 8th grade boys in the world)...
Crazay. This whole thing.
