Okay I know theres already an Oscar Prediction thread and if you think this one's unnecesarry then sue me but I was wondering what the consensus was on here about which of these films will take the Oscar for Best Picture? I'm thinking Crash will because of the momentum shift re: the year's films. It seemed that Brokeback was the frontrunner for a looooonnnggg time but all of a sudden, Crash came out of nowhere and won the SAG award (which shows it has the acting community etc's support) and it really looks like its going to make a comeback and win this year. So, I think both movies equally deserve the award for the most part but I think Crash will take it on March 5th.
And please, before you predict, clear all of your favoritism for the films and think logically and clearly without just saying BROKEBACK! because I know you all support it very much on here mainly because of the barriers it has broken for gay storylines. And I support that but just think clear-headed..ly. If thats a word LOL.
While both are among the best movies I've EVER seen, I think Brokeback will still win.

Can you give me the address in order to serve the subpoena?
Patronus, what did you think of Magnolia?
The other thread on this is only 11 threads below this one.
It's one of my favorite movies of all time. I absolutely loved every second of it.
Well, that is one thing we disagree on.
I thought it was interesting, and maybe I will have to watch it again.
But interesting in an "what the hell?" not a "hell yes!"
YWIW? this indicates you did not listen to the podcast. For shame!
The SAG award is for "Best Ensemble", and although it seems like that is what was voted "Best Picture" I think that CRASH is a total ensemble picture, so the actors voted it such. That doesn't mean they think it was the best film.
I have not had time.
Bad bad YWIW -
Work has been insane, and there has been some personal stuff going on with a friend.
Bad bad YWIW.
It is actually one my to do list for today.
Every article I've read in the past couple of weeks has indicated a shift towards Crash over Brokeback. Until a couple of weeks ago, I was 100% sure Brokeback was going to take it -- I'm leaning the other way now.
Personally, I haven't seen Brokeback or Capote yet, but of the other three nominees (which I did see), I thought Munich was the best film.

I think Crash should win. But I don't think it will.
Crash made me think, Brokeback just made me cry. *shrug*
I just don't get the big deal about Crash. I thought it was a good film with a couple of really good performances (neither of which got recognized by the Academy), but I just don't put it up as a "Best Picture" quality film. It was too heavy handed from a direction standpoint. The ending was overly sentimental in my opinion and it just seemed rushed. I liked it, but I didn't love it.
I realize that it has become Brokeback Mountain's biggest competiton, but I'd be very surprised and disappointed if it won Best Picture.
ETA: We'll definitely be talking about this on this week's Sunset & 42nd which will be available for download on Wednesday.

I just think that it should win Best Picture over Brokeback.
But, I have not seen any of the other nominations. I think I should before I get into any Oscar discussions.
I agree with Patronus on Crash.
I understand it is love it or hate it though.
I have seen all 5.
Munich was far from deserving in my estimation as well.
Capote was nice, but mainly Hoffman and the overlooked Actor who played Perry Smith.
Good Night and Good Luck was my favorite, but does not seem like a winner.
Brokeback is left by default.
Again on the podcast and 150 other threads already.
(YWIW, I know you are busy, I was kidding with you. )
Brokeback is going to win. If it doesn't, it would be the biggest upset in Oscar history--no film has this number of precursor awards that I am aware of.
I liked Good Night, and Good Luck and Crash more, so I would be thrilled if either of them won.
overlooked Actor who played Perry Smith.
Yes, I loved Clifton Collins Jr. in Capote. While he obviously wasn't as flashy as Hoffman's performance as Truman Capote, he was the "yin" to Hoffman's "yang" so to speak. I really thought he was almost as important to the flow of that film as Hoffman's breathtaking performance. I was disappointed that he didn't get a Best Supporting Actor nod.
I know, but I do like listening to it!
I can't dicuss it with you now P, but I agree.
I will no longer participate in these threads, other than to say that I will no longer participate in these threads.
That said, Brokeback should and will win.
Curiously, if CRASH wins, it may make BROKEBACK that much more famous -- the beloved (not my take; look at the awards list -- probably the greatest consensus ever about such a small movie) film that was suddenly shut out in the eleventh hour.
More to the point -- it's hard to fathom that Lee and Osana/McMurtry won't take those categories. And possibly the cinematography. So if CRASH pulls the upset, we'll be left a film having been awarded "best" in key elements, but not best picture. It happens sometimes, but it makes the Oscars look rather silly. (Happens at the Tony's, too, ditto.)
In terms of the "landmark" status to be awarded BROKEBACK? -- and it is that, whether you like the film or not -- it's a win-win. If it wins the top award, it's an Academy and industry lauded landmark. If it loses, it's the movie Hollywood ended up very fickle about. And probably discussed MORE, now and forever, as the "loser."
I think Brokeback will win with no problem. Award or no award, it will be in the history books. It has won everything up until this point, why wouldn't they award it now?
Also...
It seemed that Brokeback was the frontrunner for a looooonnnggg time but all of a sudden, Crash came out of nowhere and won the SAG award (which shows it has the acting community etc's support) and it really looks like its going to make a comeback and win this year.
Crash was ALWAYS going to win that one.
Yeah... what the hell does Best Ensemble have to do with Best Picture, anyway? I would have been surprised if Crash hadn't won the SAG for Best Ensemble. It means didly.
