I've just started using my ATM card at stores. I used to use it only at the bank. I may go back to that. Yikes!
It's beyond frightening.
Makes me want to go back to the old fashioned way of passbooks and bringing checks to the teller.

Mooney, we had our account emptied last fall! An awful experience!
I only use my ATM card to withdraw money from the bank. I won't use it to purchase anything at a store, restaraunt or online.
After listening to some of the stories my friend tells (she works in the card division of a credit union), I've started checking my accounts online or via phone a time or two a day.

I am just vigilant - but still use my debit card.
I live on my debit card, I hate carrying cash, which I blame on Chris.
With Chase buying WaMu, I guess they sent out documentation I missed saying that as of Friday all WaMu debit cards were deactivated. I was very upset when i went to the ATM and my card was rejected. 20 minutes on the phone and well I am debit card less until the Chase one gets here this week. I feel SOOOO lost.

Just got a call from my daughter. Turns out all the withdrawals were made yesterday from two different Chase ATMs in MANHATTAN!
Geez, guys, if you needed funds, you could have asked!
Can't blame me for this one
That's another thing. Didn't her bank get suspicious after, oh, maybe the second, third or fourth withdrawal? I think I have something set up on my card/accounts that if so many withdrawals are made in a certain period of time, a warning is raised on the account. Something like that.

That's what I like about my bank - the minute something's not right they check. Even when I shop for something unusual, they ask me to get on the phone to confirm. I love my credit union.
My bank will say "you exceeded your limit for the day" which pisses me off because it's my money !!! Guess I should now be happy for that feature.
That's true, too! I don't think my bank lets me take out more than $400 at a clip, but I'm not sure how many withdrawals are allowed per day.

No, the only thig they alerted her about was the fact that the last withdrawal caused an overdraft and she was being charged $45.00. That's when she said "What the hell....?"
After this is fixed she needs to change banks.

The bank will likely waive all fees. If not, call Tim Geithner and he will take care of it.

True, Brd - good advise for all of us.
Yes, Boobs, she says this has convinced her to change banks (which can also be a hassle).
I think I'm going to call my bank and find out for sure what their exact policies are for amount and number of withdrawals per day. And what would have to happen on the account(s) to raise the red flag that something's not right.

I have to say that my own bank (different from my daughter's) is pretty good about getting in touch with us if they think something's funny. The last time hubby was in Europe, they called me because he was using his card in France and I was withdrawing funds from the same account here.
Yea Moony, I hate changes banks too, but this is good reason too. The hassle will be worth it in the end.

Better safe than sorry, Moony.
I NEVER mind if my bank calls to see if activity that is out of the ordinary is really mine...
I'm so sorry she has to deal with that.
So, I thought I had 9 to 5 tickets tonight. Turns out I have Guys & Dolls tickets for tonight. The 9 to 5 tickets are for Thursday, which now I can't use because I have a work dinner. (At the Rainbow Room, so I'm not complaining!). I'm a total dunce.
Very sorry to hear that anyone has been having bank problems. (Wish I could say that's rare, but....)
Also, everyone, banks are closing credit card accounts "due to inactivity." I have a bunch of credit cards I never use (but have because they helped push my credit rating to the top) and discovered that banks are now closing down accounts that have not been used in a long time. I called every bank I have a credit card with and sure enough they shut down about 4 of my credit cards. Their advice: "Use your cards, even if it's for something small and then you just pay it off at the end of the month. Keep your lines of credit open and your credit rating high."
On top of that, American Express is scrutinizing your purchases and adjusting your credit limit based on what you're buying. For example, if you have charges to a "dollar store," they assume that you're having financial problems!
