Can I just say how AMAZING these two women are? Can I get an AMEN up in here?
EDIT: I am talking about Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald if you did not know.

Spider, honey, Etta and Ella shouldn't need ANY further explanation! I've seem Etta MANY times - and HIGHLY recommend her CD "Love's Been Rough on Me" to anyone who wants to know what an experienced blues singer sounds like.
Ella is simply the best.
I am so jealous that you have seen Etta. I would kill to see her live. She is without a doubt my FAVORITE female singer of all time. I love her younger years when she had that "growl" in her voice and I love her now that she has gotten back to her blues roots. Have you heard her new cd? Here is a link where you can listen to full length clips of her songs. AMAZING!!!

Spider - I'm a blues junkie One of the greatest nights of my life was being in a small club in Texas and dancing to Etta and BB King playing together for FOUR HOURS! The King and Queen (with no offence intended to Muddy Waters or Koko Taylor
)
Etta still sings all over the place all the time - just keep your eyes and ears open!
OMG, you saw Etta and BB King, TOGETHER? Grrrr.....

Like two comets deciding to travel together for awhile, Spider
I want to see them together. God, I would die of complete happiness. And if she ever picked me out of the crowd and sang to me I would melt in her arms, with the biggest grin on my face.
Le BUMP!!! Come on now. There has to be more fans of these great women out there. Let your voices be heard!!!

For those who understand:
AT LAST
Written By:
M. Gordon, H. Warren
Lyrics:
At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song
Ohh yeah yeah
At last
The skies above are blue
My heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you
I found a dream, that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known
Ohh yeah yeah
You smile, you smile
Oh and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
For you are mine at last
I found a dream, that I could speak to
A dream that I can call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known
I saw Ella Fitzgerald once a year from 1971 until her final concert, either at Carnegie Hall or Avery Fisher or Tanglewood, and finally at Radio City.
There may be singers who are more emotional or singers who are more sophisticated, but no singer I have ever seen or heard communicated as much joy and love for music as she did.
If you don't know her scat to "Lady Be Good," find it and play it when you're blue. You won't be for long! If you do, how much of it do you know by heart? More than you think, I bet!

LOVE THEM!!!!!! At Last is one of my favorite songs of all time.
I JUST WANNA MAKE LOVE TO YOU
--Etta James
I dont want you to be no slave
I dont want to work all day
but I want you to be true
and I just wanna make love to you
love to you
ooh-ooh
love to you
all I want to do is wash your clothes
I dont want to keep you indoors
there is nothing for you to do
but keep me making love to you
love to you
ooh-ooh
love to you
CHORUS and I can tell by the way
that you walk that walk
I can hear by the way
you talk that talk
and I can know by the way
you treat your girl
that I could give you all the loving
in the whole wide world
all I want to do is bake your bread
just to make sure youre well fed
I dont want you sad and blue
and I just wanna make love to you
CHORUS
all I want to do is bake your bread
just to make sure youre well fed
I dont want you sad and blue
and I just wanna make love to you
love to you
ooh-ooh
love to you
ooh-ooh
love to you

Ever since I saw Pleasantville I've associated "At Last" with cherry blossoms.
Wow, what is stunning is that Ella and Etta are crammed into ONE thread and Edna, or whatever her name is, has 1000 threads.
There is something to be said for legacy, history and longevity. Ella and Etta are true legends.

Plum - "Love's Been Rough on Me" is extraordinary. It was released in 1997, when she'd lived long enough to really know what she's singing about, and still robust enough to make it soar. Absolutely drop-to-your-knees impactful.
Nothing beats seeing Etta sing "At Last" live. A fourth of July concert years ago...the price of the ticket was worth that moment alone.
Now, see...if my rude neighbors would blast Etta or Ella instead of a constant Rap music bass backbeat, I wouldn't have to complain and hate them.

Love Etta. Love Ella singing anything. She does a great job with "This Time the Dream's on Me."
Thank God this isn't a thread asking to choose between the two!
There is no way to do it.

Just - one of the greatest experiences I've ever had seeing anything live - theatre, opera, concerts, ballet, whatever - was a free outdoor concert with B.B. King and Etta. They played for FOUR HOURS, and the finale was a 20 minute improvisation mixing "The Thrill is Gone" and "At Last". I almost passed out I was so emotionally exhausted by the end of it - and I have never seen an audience reaction like they got when it was over.
