Lucky! And free, too!
Etta only sang two songs toward the end of the concert, and "At Last" was so powerful I forgot what the other song was! I also remember that she was actually sitting down the entire time (I'm sure it was for health reasons) and I was thinking...my god...if she was standing up the belting would have knocked the audience down!

What I love is that her sons are so involved with her career and music now. It's obvious how much they love, honor and respect her - as well they should!
Etta is without a doubt one of my all time favorite singers, if not my one favorite. I rarely play favorites. I recently bought the "Let's Roll" album and I'm soon getting my hands on the "Blues to the Bone", and I just ADORE her.
I got a heart full of trouble, a house full of sin
things are bad as they ever been
if trouble were money
I'd have more money than any man should
I'm open for business in your neighborhood
the blues is my business, and business is good
The perfect combination of blues and rock&roll.
Has anyone else read....."Rage to Survive: The Etta James Story"....it's one of those books you just can't put down. What a life this woman has had...a MUST read for all of her fans and for all of those who aren't familiar with this amazing singer.
Aiming for the day that I can play Etta's "At Last..."
What will you play it on Cookie?
Boobs--that's a really great bio.
But this thread is supposed to be about Etta AND Ella! We need a little more Ella love here!
Twelve songs from eight musicals:
* “ Warm All Over ” and "Somebody Somewhere" from Frank Loesser's Most Happy Fella (1956)
* “ If I Were a Bell ” and “ Guys and Dolls ” from Frank Loesser's Guys and Dolls (1950)
* “ Almost Like Being in Love ” from Lerner and Lowe's Brigadoon (1947)
* “ I Could Have Danced All Night ” and "Show Me" from Lerner and Lowe's My Fair Lady (1956)
* "No Other Love" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Me and Juliet (1953)
* "Dites-Moi" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific (1949)
* “ Hernando's Hideaway ” and "Steam Heat" from Adler and Ross's Pajama Game (1954)
* “ Whatever Lola Wants ” from Adler and Ross's Damm Yankees (1955)
Awarded 4 stars by Down Beat jazz magazine in 1963, the review commented that it was "A perfect complement to Fitzgerald's classic series of 'Song Book' albums."
Listening to Ella's rendition of Anything Goes on Pandora right now - it just don't get any better than that!
Who doesn't love Ella and Etta? There is simply nothing bad you can say about either. They just make you feel...
Thanks for posting that PJ. I do not have that Ella recording I will have to look for it if only to hear her sing Dites-Moi. Of all the songs to choose from South Pacific!
Here you go boys ....

Well, put it this way: French is not her forte. But it swings!
And it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...
Amazon, Boobs? Hell, I went to i-tunes and am already listening to it! Ole! Just puts you in a good mood!
Except now it is making me sad...Ella's gone and I will never see her live! I am loving this recording. Thanks again, PJ!

*BUMP*
For all the Etta lovers, she's got a new album coming out next month! How bout that picture? She seems to have lost some weight. I thought it was Daphne Rubin-Vega in that picture.

Etta was on Austin City Limits earlier this season, and I was shocked at how tiny she looked.
What a song list!
Can't wait for Etta's takes on Purple Rain and Holding Back the Years!
There isn't a more perfect intro than Ella's seguining into the swinging sequence of Night and Day...
The beat beat beat of the tom tom....
It doesn’t come out until Tuesday, but Amazon has added samples of Etta’s new album. I missed it when I first looked at the track listing a few weeks ago, but she’s doing “Calling You” from Bagdad Café...such a great song.
Ella is one of my all-time favorite singers. I have a HUGE CD collection of Fitzgerald's, including every single Verve "Songbook" remaster out there. (Yes, that wasn't cheap... but it's my Ella!)
I was also lucky enough to see her "live" in Kansas City in the early '80s. It was supposed to be a double-bill of Count Basie and his Orchestra for the first half, and Ella and her trio for the second.
But they made an announcement before starting that Count Basie was too ill to perform that night. (This was shortly before he passed away.) The announcer went on to say that "Miss Fitzgerald has agreed to do an extra set tonight." ...And members of the Count Basie Orchestra would be sitting in on her sets.
She ended up singing for 2 1/2 hours solid with one 15 minute break in between! And she was no spring chicken at that point. But she was ELLA. She ran out of planned and rehearsed material halfway through her second set... so she started laughing and then began asking us (the audience) what we wanted to hear! I couldn't believe that.
We were shouting out song titles, and she'd turn to her musicians and they'd "discuss" for a few seconds. Then she'd ALWAYS turn back and say, "All right, let's do that one." It was the most amazing thing... like having our own LIVE Ella jukebox. Such a consummate professional, and I have never seen anything like her in concert before or since.
I miss her on this planet every day.
Why are Etta and Ella always so closely associated? They are very different artists... I'll never understand it.
Ella stands alone!
They are closely associated because they both are goddesses of the vocal talent. LOVE them both!
