Thank you besty and tazber,
I have never seen "Fall of the House of Usher" - I will look out for it.
I am intrigued by "Cat People", just read more about it on Wiki, another one to buy.
I must say I do also like "Strait-Jacket" - I saw it years ago. There were a lot of campy horrors with aging female stars made back then.
I just read on Wiki that when it was first shown in the 60's, little cardboard axes were handed to theatre goers - now that's fun.

The swimming pool scene is in the original CAT PEOPLE. There's nothing particularly frightening about CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE, which is a sweet little movie about a young girl's fantasy life, well worth watching for some lovely black and white cinematography.
Let's not speak of Schrader's idiotic remake of CAT PEOPLE.
Some old favorites that I turn to over and over:
TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE -- not the avalanche of gore you might expect, the real horrors are largely kept off camera. For my money the most genuinely nightmarish film out there.
THE SHINING -- Kubrick's great mad freakout, with the one Jack Nicholson performance that I happily watch.
ISLAND OF LOST SOULS -- the pre-code version of ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, it was banned for many years and there's still something transgressive about it. Vastly entertaining, with a wonderful performance from Charles Laughton.
THE BIRDS -- hell yeah. The attack on the diner, the scene of Melanie waiting outside the school, and so on and so on.
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD -- probably the great American horror movie. Still shocking in all the best ways.
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN -- hell yeah.

I remember when You're Next came out, and there was a discussion on here within its thread about the most badass ladies or "final girls" in horror movies
Buzzfeed has a list for it now, complete with two dudes

It's beautifully filmed and for a slasher movie the acting is really just fantastic, especially by Jessica Biel. And it is the only horror film to ever make me cry.

Not to thread-jack too much, but I'm interested in getting a good (if there is such a thing) Blu-ray copy of Night of the Living Dead.
There are several out there (is the film in public domain?), released by different companies.
Do any of you have a good Blu-ray of the original movie, and if so, who is the distributor? I'd like to get it on BD.

I've always enjoyed the remake more than the original in that case. But isn't it sad/weird that most of the films being cited here need to be noted as "the original, not the remake?"

The Exorcism of Emily Rose! Love Laura Linney - naturally she makes it worth checking out.
Anyone seen See No Evil (AKA Blind Terror) from 1971? Mia Farrow, blind, alone, running around an English country estate fleeing from a crazed killer. I loved it.

xxdrewboy85xx, which Funny Games are you referring to? The original or the remake with Naomi Watts?

Does FREAKS count as a horror film? I was more disturbed with what I was seeing than frightened.

Posted: 10/17/13 at 4:52pmb12b, there have been so many rumors about a remake of The Exorcist in the last 20 years! I do know that one production went into casting for Regan, but have no idea where that went...it was a few years ago.

"IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS just came out on BD Tuesday."
I had NO idea. OMG, I need this NOW!!!
And Doodle, I was listening to the commentary on the new HALLOWEEN BD and Jaime Lee Curtis was talking about how Friedkin originally wanted her for Regan but Janet Leigh wouldn't let her do it. I had never known that!

I know she auditioned, Jordan, but didnt know if she was a favorite. Eve Plumb, Melanie Griffith, Brooke Sheilds and Kim Basinger also auditioned for Regan.
I do know that many parents took their kids out of the casting calls once they realized what the part was. The novel was already notorious.
I cant imagine Janet didnt know what the part was before Jamie auditioned.

Posted: 10/17/13 at 5:15pmJamie never auditioned. He told Janet he wanted her to do it and she just said no. From what she says, it sounds like she was his first choice.
