That's the Mother's Day Eppie, Reg...love the two eppies they let Bonnie sing, the other one is at the bowling alley.
I also think that Roseanne grew alot and became a pretty good actress. Another highlight of the eppie where their dad dies is her final goodbye scene with the coffin. Top acting from all of them.

Isn't there an episode where during the credit roll, Laurie is sitting on the sofa polishing a Golden Globe award...or was it an Emmy?

Yes, that's one of the pleasures of watching the show in syndication: you can watch Roseanne go from being funny but, frankly, a terrible actor to being pretty damned good.
I mean, I wouldn't want to see her Hedda Gabler, but still . . .

"Burnett's show was considered a variety show."
I know, but still...
"And then there's Janis..."
"Oh Janis, yeah. You know, I learned the truth at seventeen too."
"Not Janis Ian, you idiot...Janis Joplin!"

Posted: 10/30/08 at 4:20pmGood list, but I agree the order is totally out of whack. I would put Taxi somewhere in the top 15 of all time. That was one of the funniest shows ever. Shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy do not even compare with shows like Taxi, Roseanne, All in the Family, The Honeymooners, etc.

That reminds me of when Roseanne and Jackie sneak into their old house and talk about their father (was it the same episode?). The acting was excellent and the chemistry between those two was always perfection.
OH! And Estelle Parsons was delightful. I loved how the writers found ways to make Bev completely surprise us. Her coming out of the closet (and the family's reaction) was brilliant.
I do agree that the final season was completely off the rails, but I actually enjoyed it. They turned what had been previously reserved for a series finale into an entire season of mayhem. While it didn't always hit the mark, I found it totally compelling at the time that it aired. I was always curious to see what the next episode had in store.

Of course there are some glaring mistakes. Three's Company didn't make it into the Top 50 and probably should be there.
Bewitched probably should have been in the running. (Moreso than The Brady Bunch).
I think shows like Third Rock From the Sun and Mad About You could be argued for a spot somewhere in the Top 50.

Fun list and good to see most of the shows I thought 'had' to be on there are.
And I LOVE that 'Soap' got its due!

Posted: 10/30/08 at 8:16pmI think they got the number one slot ABSOLUTELY right. The Simpsons has been running consistently for nearly 20 years now, holding solid ratings all the while. Not every episode is classic, of course, but it is STILL good for at least a few laughs, if not complete belly shakers, every week. Besides, with as many episodes as they've had, if even a third of them sucked (which they don't), that's STILL more excellent episodes than most shows PERIOD, let alone shows that still sustain the laughter. I would say it would be VERY easy to pull together a list of 100 GREAT episodes of The Simpsons with no trouble -- what other show can you say that of?

Posted: 10/30/08 at 9:20pmSorry but an animated show is not a sitcom in my book. It is a cartoon with adult themes. Look back at the classic comedy shows over the years. What made them funny was the classic writing and acting. These people became part of the culture and you almost felt like they were part of your life. Can you honestly say that about The Simpsons??

mc, I was thinking the same thing. Not to disparage animated stuff at all, but the unquantifiable contribution that a live actor makes is, well, unquantifiable.
And again, I'm completely aware of the contribution of animated characters' "voices," from Mel Blanc to Yeardley Smith.
But I can't quite compare them to those of Agnes Moorhead, Estelle Getty, or, hell, Morey Amsterdam.

I wish they wouldn't have stuck to "categories" and just kept the "funniest shows of all time."
That would include variety shows like:
Carol Burnett
Your Show Of Shows
Jackie Gleason
...oh, and where's the George Burns and Gracie Allen Show? One of the funniest ever, because of the genius that is Gracie.
