frankly I'm more concerned with the war in Iraq and the many Americans and non-Americans dying there.
I think it's wonderful to have a cause, but sometimes I think people need to step back and look at the bigger picture.....
On the other hand we all affect a change where we can, so Munk I hope this helps your cause.
Okay, first of all, I typed that in about one minute. Believe it or not, I DO know how to spell "stomach," I was just typing very quickly.
My reason for posting this wasn't to "convert" people to vegetarians. That's preposterous. All of my family eats meat, it's not like I sit there and tell them how their food died. It's my decision - not my decision for you - I never once said anything to allude to the fact that no one should eat meat.
Second, just because animal rights is something I hold near and dear to my heart doesn't mean I'm ignorant about and/or don't care about other worldy issues. To try and demean me by saying that because I posted this, I don't care about bigger issues like people dying in the war is absurd and ignorant.
Yeah, it's wonderful to have a cause. If I were a millionare I would have hundreds. I would have sent money to Katrina victims, I would send money to build hospitals and schools in third world countries.
Never once in my post did I say that animal rights is the only important issue. Never once did I even suggest that everything else pales in comparison. You're telling me to step back and look at the bigger picture? Okay. Don't talk down to me and act like I'm ignorant on world issues. No - a duck is not a man. I never equated the two.
In short, the reason for my post was to put the information out there. Before I became interested in animal rights, I had NO idea how foie gras was produced. Education is the first step. And if, by this post, I educated one person on this board about how inhumane it is, then I succeeded.

Mmmmm....I love foie gras. I used to eat it all the time at my uncle's.
Oh, thanks for reminding me! I have a hamburger to eat! Score. I'm so hungry.

I'm with munk here. It's always interesting to see how bent out of shape meat-eaters get around vegetarians. Good for you, eat meat. No one's asking you to justify it (as you do whenever an issue like this arises).
Whenever someone finds out I'm vegetarian, they do one of two things - generally depending on the amount of brains in their head and on their maturity level. They either:
1. Put on the kid gloves and act like it's such a great acheivement, and they WISH they could do it.
2. "Ew! That's nasty. You're gay. I'm going to eat a hamburger."
But...you ARE gay.
*eats hamburger*
I'm too lazy to be a vegetarian. I tried it for a month and failed. It's a meat-eater's world, and it takes work to defy that. Maybe if the ghost of Linda McCartney could come be my personal chef, I'd do a better job.
As to foie gras -- in addition to the cruelty issue, why do people pay $20 for three bites of a diseased liver?

the same reason people pay 20 dollars for a hand full of diseased cheese, cause its yummy

I raised ducks and chickens as a kid, yet I still love foie gras!
Meanwhile, those big old beef livers at Gristedes are $1 a pound. Sure, they're vile. But what a bargain!

The only cruelty involved with Foie Gras is that it is becoming all but inaccessable. I'm with you Papa-- we'll eat up that Foie and get as Gras as possible.
And the single best thing I have ever eaten in my life was a warm Foie Gras & Lentil salad served at Everest no more.
It's not cruel if you pair the foie gras with figs and a delicate Sauterne or rose' Champagne.
You guys are proving that it's impossible to take something seriously.
If these were dogs being force fed until their stomach's burst, there would be outrage. But not - it's a duck. "Just" a duck.
I'm much younger than most of you people on here acting like giant ignorant bastards. Grow up.
We each can eat or not eat whatever we choose.
munk---you educated me, and I'm grateful for it.
Thanks.
Wow, now there's a notion I've never heard of before.
I guess I just don't understand how someone can sit there and order something that they know a living thing suffered for.
Whatever. You're all too immature and ignorant to actually see a problem with this. Hopefully Karma will get you.
Name calling and making accusations about complete strangers without knowledge of their belief system ... very mature.
I'm sure that there are many things that offend me that don't offend you and vice versa.
I'm calling people ignorant based on their IGNORANT comments posted on the board. I think that's pretty indicative of their "belief system."
I guess I just don't understand how people can see that this is happening and not care. It's astounding.
Thanks Munk. I'm not a vegetarian, but awareness in any form is never a bad idea.
Exactly. I'm not asking people to stop eating meat. I'm just trying to educate you about how this food is produced. Anyone with half of a heart would never eat this again.
hmmm, most dog is too stringy, this process might help with that.
Sorry, Munk, but the foie gras debate has been going on for decades, centuries maybe. Foie-gras production techniques may seem like a fresh outrage to you--and I honor your objection to cruelty--but bringing this up as if it were breaking news is apt to invite groans of "Not again..."
I know what it's like to have posters make fun of your passion, and I will apologize to you for seeming to belittle you. I'm sorry. Feel free to come on to any one of the political threads I start and spank me for being obsessed about Karl Rove.

Munk I admire your passion and your compassion.
I don't think this is fresh at all. The reason I posted it yesterday was because I got something in the mail about it, and I thought, well, if I post something and educate ONE person, then I have done well.
I didn't think I was delivering breaking news - but it's one of those things people turn a blind eye to. Sorry.

So...are lions bad because they rip apart their food?
Man has evolved from Homo neanderthalensis all the way to Homo sapiens sapiens. We, the meat eaters, have rightfully earned that second sapiens.
Why do you always get so pissed off at people who don't care about HOW. It tastes good. It's a delicacy. It's a part of life.
Dogs are different. When a duck listens to me, I will protect it from foie grasation.
Dogs are higher up on the evolutionary chain.
