Not when there are more important things about which to be concerned.

Importance is a matter of opinion.

Sure, if every world issue could be solved with the slaughter of 4 million ducks, I would endorse it. I'm not placing animal rights above human rights.

This thread wasn't created to influence others, it was created to educate others.

I never looked down upon anyone who eats meat or anyone who will continue to eat this "delicacy."

I called people ignorant NOT because they eat meat, NOT because they eat fois gras - but because of their immature reactions to this thread.

If you think for a split second that I am immature because I posted this thread, then you're not seeing the point.

Why is it that meat-eaters get so defensive and demeaning around vegetarians? Suppressed guilt? I don't know.

I don't know why people are up in arms about this thread. As vb said - it was about education. That's all. CHILL OUT.

Munk - I can tell you that I, personally will never eat foie gras again. And additionally, this thread encompasses all I detest about these boards and the reason I so seldomly post.

"maybe when he learns to spell stomach" - what a ****ing moron you are.

To those of you who say "there are other things I'm worried about" - what are you doing about them? Even if it was something as small as starting this thread, at least Munk acted on his convictions.

Most of the responses you've received on this thread, Monk, came from the "usual suspects" - the self-absorbed, wittier-than-thou, losers whose opinion should not phase you in the least. I've learned it's best (however difficult) to NOT ENGAGE them in conversation. Just keep doing what you're doing.

I never looked down upon anyone who eats meat or anyone who will continue to eat this "delicacy."

But you did, Munk. You said something like: "Anyone with half a heart would never eat this again."

Which brings me to your earlier point, Kringas, about how bent out of shape and silly non-vegetarians get around vegetarians. I think I can answer that one. In any situation where you have one group taking what it believes to be the moral high ground over another, you're going to see a similar reaction.

What's the first thing that goes through your mind if you're talking to someone and they say something along the lines of: "I believe marriage should be only between a man and a woman." A self-righteous homophobe, right? Does it make you feel bad about being gay? No, you just feel indignant toward that person. How dare he/she think the his/herself as morally superior to me!

Along those same lines, when you have people saying stuff like this, which was said on the first page of the thread:

amazing how easily meat eaters put out of mind the practices of butchering when they are shoving a dead carcas into their mouths.

It's coming from the same place. It's saying, "Because of this decision I made in my life, I am better than you." And I know this is not the attitude of most vegetarians. Hell, if/when I finally become vegetarian, it will have nothing to do with my thinking that eating meat is wrong. It will be for health purposes. Or there's the co-worker of mine who doesn't eat meat simply because she doesn't like the taste/texture of meat. (Side note: She has to deal with the same silly jokes/nonsense as anyone else, too).

Fair or not, human nature is to assume the most vocal/obnoxious of any group represents the whole group. And that might be why some non-vegetarians always feel the need to make the "Excuse me while I go eat a hamburger" joke.

As to the foie gras question: I don't eat it and haven't since I found out how it was produced. And if I'm in a restaurant where it's offered to me by my dining companion, I say why I don't eat it. So I can admire the intent of the post. Just don't take the jokes/standard threadjacks so personally. If nothing else, they're keeping the original thread on the first page, so one other person might read it.

I'm a vegetarian and I understand where Munk is coming from. I also understand the reaction of those who say that there are "bigger things" to worry about. Our tolerance of the incredible cruelty involved in some of the non-vegetarian food industry can arguably be seen as on a farther end of the same spectrum as the dismissive way we tolerate or turn a blind eye to the cruelty inflicted on others in the world, who aren't quite like us.

On the other hand, Munk, in the long run, you'll catch more flies with honey when it comes to this kind of issue. Make people defensive right at the get-go, and they won't see the forest for the trees.

"Not sure why Munk appeared to push so many buttons, but is there something wrong with someone being passionate about something?"

absolutely not....but there IS something wrong with someone berating people because they do not believe as he does.......ie the "stupid and immature" comment.

"when ducks grow thumbs then maybe my opinion will change."

hehe, love that zone

Munk, as you move on in life, you'll find that pushing your beliefs onto people and calling them "stupid and immature" if they do not agree will not get you anywhere. That is my only problem with your post, that truly was rather pompous. As iflit said you get more with honey.......

you need to step back and allow people to NOT agree with you without berating them. That is the sign of adult thinking (and really I have no idea how old you are)

I don't even eat duck, as it was my college mascot.

Being passionate is one thing....being "Ass"ionate is quite another.

M J R,

"maybe when he learns to spell stomach" - what a ****ing moron you are.

These types of personal attacks will not be tolerated in this forum. You have crossed a line. Perhaps you won't be bothered by your banning because you "so seldomly post".

As to the nature of your comment, it is incredibly important to be concerned with your spelling and grammar in a worldwide community. This is especially the case when you are trying to draw attention to an issue which you feel is important. Nothing cheapens a message more than something as key as spelling 'stomach' as 'stomack'.

And I'm the ****ing moron.

Cordially yours.

In Munk's defense, I think that his approach is fairly typical of the young, thoughtful, and passionate. I love that he cares and believes he can make a difference. I remember being every bit as intense and in your face about my favorite issues when I was his age. I mellowed over time (in my delivery, not my beliefs) and he will, too.

this delusional jihad against poor spellers is indicative of all that is wrong with bww.com, mr. keaton. to frighten hapless posters with the idea that you have the power to banish them borders on maniacal. i demand that you hereby apologize to the community as a whole and specifically to rob and craig who alone control the destiny of this board and its posters. you oughtta be ashamed of yerself!

You are too right Papa.

I'm merely a ****ing moron, who himself wanders the hinterlands of BWW slaying windmills. I barely have the credibility to use the "Report Abuse" link at the top of the boards.

But I shall only apologize to the phantom moderator. Rob and Craig are too busy building this place to be concerned with the abuse and insecurity that fills the off-topic board all too often.

I understand where you're all coming from, but there are a few things here that just aren't right:

-I never called people immature and stupid because they ate this - I called them that based on their immature reactions to my thread, as in "Oh, I'm going to go eat a hamburger now." The nastiness and personal attacks came my way first.

-My mispelling of stomach is such a non-issue it's almost ridiculous. You're acting as if I don't know HOT to spell stomach. And, how often on these boards do I utterly misspell things anyway? Chill.

The spelling issue only arises because the seldom poster M J R chose to call me a ****ing (one more star and it could've been charming) moron.

You fixed the problem, at that point our transaction was complete.
