I am posting this due to the success of the last thread of this nature that I posted regarding J. Crew.
For those of you that don't know, Foie Gras is a "delicacy". If is the fatty liver of a duck or a goose. Sure, one might say that if people are going to eat duck anyway, they might as well make use of the liver as well.
That's not so. Ducks are bred specifically and soley for the production of Foie Gras - and nothing else.
It is absolutely despicable and inhumane. If you wish to learn more about the practices, read below:
Three times a day, a worker will go up to hundreds of ducks and shove a foot-long metal tube down their throats that forcibly pumps a massive amount of food into their stomachs. By the end of the day, the ducks have ingested 1/3 of their normal body weight. After a few weeks, their livers begin to fail, causing them seizures and shock. Teetering on the brink of death, they're then hung upside down from shackles and killed.
Many ducks and geese die when their stomachs literally explode from the huge volume of food. Others suffer deep lacerations and abrasions to their throats, due to the huge metal pipe and the brutality of the "farmers."
In a matter of weeks, the liver of a force-fed bird swells up to ten times it's normal size and ceases to function, allowing toxins to build up in the body and literally poison the animal. The diseased, fatty liver is then cut out of the birds' bodies and shipped off to upscale restaurants.
The abuse must stop. Foie gras is known to be one of the cruelest foods in the world, yet production continues each day in the US.
A dozen European countries have already banned this practive, and in 2004, it was made illegal in California.

Yet another reason I am vegetarian. I just can't support an industry that uses those types of practices.
Papa....can I join you? I'll bring the toast.
Cruel.
I would be more inclined to give this some thought if the individual knew how to spell 'stomach'.
It sounds pretty bad, but I have trouble mustering outrage when there's so much other horrible stuff happening in the world.
The question is: If the shoe were on the other webbed foot, would the ducks be doing this to US?
in a freakin' heartbeat, pj. y'know why the ducks didn't have a bigger part in the birds? hitch felt the world was not ready to see the pure calculated savagery that is the duck way.

my love for tasty duck liver far out weighs my love for ducks
This is pretty damn disgusting, though.
This could apply to anything
Veal meat from young calfs ain't pleasant. My dad drove a truck for a living & he saw the inside of a slaughterhouse & said it almost put him off meat. A fish is caught by it biting on a hook which stays in it which has to be painful
Bottom line is unless you eat leaves & lettuce, there is no way around it
yay for us vegans
amazing how easily meat eaters put out of mind the practices of butchering when they are shoving a dead carcas into their mouths.
Emeril's Delmonico Steak House creates a different foie gras for each day of the week. I'm just sayin'...
Corine2- What do you have to say about all this? Is there foie gras on your corner?
If being a veggie works for you great
It is equally wrong to force your views on others. If we stopped eating meat, the economic consequences on the economy would be catastrophic.
Micky D's is exempt for, as you know, the burger is not meat. No idea what it is but it ain't meat. Seriously, protest in your way by being a veggie. I commend you for it. Please do not tell me what to eat & i will do likewise
Thanks
Where is Jessica Simpson when you need her?
Yuck, yuck, and more yuck.
One more reason I commend vegetarians. And one more reason I want to be one.

If you want to be a vegetarian, be one. It's not that hard. It's just a lifestyle change.
I know, and I've been considering it much more as of late. But it is hard when you live with your parents and they eat meat all the time. I'm finding it's much easier to avoid now, mostly living on my own.

Have you ever seen what people do to lettuce? Filet Mignon medium rare, please.

The idiots in the Chicago City Council banned the sale of foie gras. Ridiculous!

I will stick to my plain chopped liver!
Bravo Ckeaton
Well said - Medium well for me please
Over the moon.... it's not THAT easy to be a vegetarian.... i was a vegetarian three years ago, and had to stop a year after that because my body could not handle it and i got very sick... i did everything properly, but some people just can't be vegetarians
I wish I could say that I had the energy or the will to invest in animal rights causes...but I don't care enough. There are many more things for me to worry about in the human world.
I've never eaten foie gras...but that sounds disgusting. I'll stick to the less fancy meats, thank you very much.
