1. What are you doing this summer? What have you been doing for the summer so far? What are your plans in the fall and winter?
This summer's been a bit of a shambles...well, not entirely. Things just haven't been going the way I'd planned (which, really, I should have planned for!). Post-graduation, I went home for a couple of weeks, then I came back to my regular, outside the city, summer digs for work (after a brief jaunt out to San Francisco, which was chilly, but lovely). Work was a big ol' mess, and I've been sitting around for the past two months hearing "you'll be set at the end of this week...beginning of next week for sure." Well, it wasn't until yesterday that it finally panned out! Ugh! Oh well, hopefully this means I'll finally get my full-time job in the city now that this has finally worked out (doesn't it always happen that way?!?!).
2. Seen any good shows and movies lately?
I caught up on shows in the late spring/early summer. Lots of repeat visits to History Boys and Inishmore (LOVE both). Saw Sweeney again, and caught Wedding Singer for the first time last week. It was okay. I thought Steven (is he a v or a ph??) Lynch was surprisingly good, and Laura Benanti was unsurprisingly weak.
Movies...The good: Little Miss Sunshine (EXCELLENT!), A Prairie Home Companion, Monster House, Devil Wears Prada. The Not-So-Good: The Lake House (ICK!) A Scanner Darkly (totally wasn't in the mood for it), Scoop (I thought Scarlett was miscast, or went about the part in the wrong way), Pirates 2 (a disappointment).
3. What have been the newest song additions to your iPod/iPod-like device?
History Boys BBC Radio broadcast, Soundtracks to Shakespeare in Love and Brokeback Mountain, Pearl Jam's new album (which I still haven't even listened to!)...
4. Any travel plans?
None. If I'd known I was going to spend so much of this summer twiddling my thumbs, maybe I would have been a bit more proactive on persuing my "fantasy trip to Europe"?? For the time being though, it's looking like I'll be sticking to the northeast.
5. Love life?
Lacklustre, as per.
6. Apartment situation?
Ugh! Looking as grim as the love life. I actually thought I had a situation set, but with the job getting pushed back and not having any nibbles on the long term horizon, I had to pass. Nothing else of particular interest. It's hard to look in earnest, when I don't have a job squared away.
7. Will I see you in NY in December???
I certainly hope so, but realistically, I'll probably be home in NH. Who knows though, maybe if I'm living in the city and my roommate goes home (wherever that might be), perhaps my parents will come here???

Blueroses, here's a picture that gives a bit of credence to the Tiff/mabel theory of Adam's love for Bono...actually, this isn't the best picture. There was one from a Vertigo show that we got quite a boot out of. Bono was kissing Adam on the cheek and Adam had this half smile/half grimace that just said so much. It was like "Ahhh, Bono! I love you so...But I cannot have you. Woe is me." It was a great picture!

From U2log.com:
Rubin and Fidelman to engineer new U2 album this September
Overseeing the album is Greg Fidelman, an engineer/producer who worked with Rick Rubin on albums for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, System of a Down and Audioslave. The Robins and Fidelman will be ensconced at Sound City studio in Van Nuys (the same place where Nirvana made “Nevermind” and Tom Petty made “Wildflowers” and “Damn the Torpedoes”) through the end of the month and again in October.
Why not September? Because Fidelman and Rubin have to go to London to engineer tracks for U2’s upcoming album at Abbey Road Studios.
Oh my God, there's apparently a mouse somewhere in my bedroom. I had to come running to mabel for help.
HELP! WTF do I DOOOO?? We don't HAVE rats in Vancouver! It could be anywhere! It could eat through my photo albums, DVDs, cords, books, or worse, my shoes and clothes! WTF???
Well, when I've got to be up at 6:15am, you won't be finding me online at 1:30 on BWW, love!
Anyway, I feel for ya, Tiff. I totally freaked out when that little mouse was in my room last semester, but I've got to say, I'm with Plum here. Of course, if you can trap it in one of those box things, where you can release it, go for it. Otherwise, your options are: sitcky paper (NO! NO! NO! I was traumatized for days) a snap-trap (still kind of gross, but at least it's quick) or picking up all food items (the fact that you mentioned my care package still kicking around is tres amusant...sorry!) and sticking it out together. Unless you've got a slew of them and they're really brave (in which case, you'd probably have to seek professional help), I don't think you'll really have problems with it running around out in the open too much...Though I agree, the thought of opening a box and seeing it sitting there is nervewracking!
Good luck!!
Tiff, sorry about your rodent infestation. Get a cat.
As for the U2 playlist - that is WAY too hard for me to wrap my brain around after this week, so I'll just attend Nicole's concert if she allows me to switch out one of her songs for the "Dancing Barefoot" cover.
Hey all!
Sorry I've been MIA lately; work has been insanely busy. From last Saturday through Wednesday I was on set every single day and probably got 1/4 of the sleep I usually get. Saturday and Sunday were quite an adventure; I promise I'll spill the details later! Now I'm in South Carolina taking a break and relaxing at my grandparent's house; my mom and I came down here to help my grandmother as she recovers from surgery. Anyway, I'm glad to see that our thread has been resurrected! BlueRoses, it's great that you've joined us!
A new album? Already?? (Okay, Atomic Bomb is a couple of years old, but it's just too soon for me to save up to fly out for ANOTHER concert!!)
Claire, where are you working now?
I should fill out my questionnaire soon.

Sorry I haven't been around this thread much since bursting onto the scene a few days ago! Here goes:
1. What are you doing this summer? What have you been doing for the summer so far? What are your plans in the fall and winter?
I have been sitting around emailing my internet buddies which my parents don't know about (and I'd be dead if they found out), I was in the West of Ireland for three weeks, I was in London the day before the chaos, and now I'm home again and still emailing buddies and BWWing. I'll be in New York for a few days this december - so get ready for Andy!
2. Seen any good shows and movies lately?
Miami Vice was quite crap, Pirates was okay, but so far this summer the winner for me has to be cars, it's just so clever and another good production from Pixar. The critics were not too impressed, but it's hard to improve if you're already on top.
3. What have been the newest song additions to your iPod/iPod-like device?
Whistle down the Wind - I finally got around to putting it on and i still love it.
4. Any travel plans?
New York. I hope to go to New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong next summer, hopefully...
5. Love life?
SH*T. No one of the opposite sex wants me and I'm not sure I want them anymore...
6. Apartment situation?
I'm 15, I'm hardly going to own an appartment.
7. Will I see you in NY in December???
I hope so, maybe we could meet up. Depends if I have time and if I'm not too scary for you.
Morning gang!
How is everyone today?
Random short poll: What new artist have you recently discovered that you can't get enough of?
For me there are two - Erin Boheme and Sophie Milman. Both are young jazzy/standards type singers and they are getting heavy play for me lately. Boheme is a more youthful sound and Milman has that deeper, sultry sound. Milman's voice has some qualities that remind me of Fiona Apple's, but a different type of music entirely.
If you are in the mood for Jazz, check them out. You can stream their albums at their sites.
Tiff's questionnaire:
1. What are you doing this summer? What have you been doing for the summer so far? What are your plans in the fall and winter?
I've been interning at MTV this summer; it's been keeping me incredibly busy. I'm on an average of 2 shoots a week (14+ hours each), and when you add in commuting time, that means I'm hardly ever at home and never get enough sleep. Right now, though, I'm at my grandparents' house in South Carolina, which is very relaxing. My grandmother and I sit around all day eating Oreos and watching soap operas! I go back to school in less than 2 weeks (I'll be a senior in college), so I should be preparing for that (packing will be a mess, especially because I know I'll just be starting the night before I have to leave).
2. Seen any good shows and movies lately?
I guess it depends on how you define "lately." This summer the best shows I've seen are The Drowsy Chaperone and The Lieutenant of Inishmore. I also saw The History Boys (would have been better if I could have actually seen the stage), Three Days of Rain (not stellar, but I was expecting that), Awake and Sing (which I really enjoyed), Satellites (off-bway; I loved it and especially though Sandra Oh was great)...that's all I can think of now.
Movies: Little Miss Sunshine is definitely the best movie I've seen in a long time. It was fabulous, and I know I'll see it again while it's still in theaters and buy the dvd when it comes out. I also enjoyed A Prairie Home Companion and The Devil Wears Prada.
Concerts: Nic and I went to see Counting Crows and The Goo Goo Dolls, which I loved. I also listened to Damien Rice and Fiona Apple in Central Park this summer.
3. What have been the newest song additions to your iPod/iPod-like device?
A bunch of Counting Crows bootlegs that a fan from Malta(!) was kind enough to send me for free, and some other random stuff.
4. Any travel plans?
Right now I'm on vacation.
5. Love life?
Nonexistent, unfortunately.
6. Apartment situation?
I'm moving into an apartment with 3 friends on campus when I go back to school, and I'm really looking forward to it.
7. Will I see you in NY in December???
Yes! I'll definitely be around, so hopefully you're not too busy and we'll actually get to meet!
Pat's random poll:
That's a tough one. I've become hooked on a few artists that aren't new to the music scene but are new to me. I can't get enough of Joe Purdy and Kendall Payne right now (extra points to anyone who can figure out how I found out about them; I bet Tiff knows!).
I saw "Scoop" last night.
I actually liked it a lot more than I thought I would considering the mixed (at best) reviews and the fact that I am not really "into" Woody Allen. I thought Scarlett was great and I actually laughed out loud a couple of times.
Oh my GOD, Claire, I thought I was the only one who started listening to Kendall Kayne (isn't that the best porn name?) because of "Grey's Anatomy"!!!!!
I'm only on here for a bit. Just had to tell you guys (well, mostly mabel) that I got sucked into the "Snakes On A Plane" hype and while I still think it's going to blow, I have to go to the cast and crew screening in Vancouver on Saturday because my bosses can't make it. Oh well, maybe I'll get some swag and I can sell it on eBay!
Hey! I posted a reply here this morning. Where the hell is it?!
Oh well, it wasn't really anything of interest. I just said that I've been out of the loop music-wise, so I have no new discoveries to contribute.
And Tiff, I hope you get some fun swag. I'm sure SoaP will be terrible, but I'm still looking forward to it. I'm hoping it will be safely on the worth-while side of that fine, fine line of badness, well into It's So Bad It'd Good territory. Probably doubtful that it will be though.
What else is up?? Not a damn thing. Claire, hope your enjoying your vacation and visiting with your grandmother! Do you go back to school this weekend or next weekend??
I think I'm going see Inishmore again on Sunday (David Wilmot and Domhnall Gleeson's last show...and who knows when they'll be back in NYC).
Guess that's about it for now. Very exciting, huh?
Ooh, maybe I'll try to go to Inishmore on Sunday! I have nothing to do that day and I'd like to see it again before I go back to school.
My last day of work is tomorrow (Friday), and I have a week at home before I head back to school. I'm planning on vegging and watching tons of movies.
Tiff, her name is actually Kendall Payne, which is not as cool a porn name as Kendall Kayne, so we'll just have to change her name for her. Isn't she fantastic?! Do you have "Grown"? I love it.
I will never in a million years see Snakes on a Plane. Even if I were offered a million dollars to do so, I seriously would not. I am absolutely paranoid of snakes; I can't describe how bad my fear is. I cannot even look at a cartoon drawing of a snake without freaking out (and I'm absolutely serious, so if anyone posts a picture of a snake on this thread I will be absolutely furious and never return, so don't even think about it). So yeah, I'm not seeing that movie. But I'm sure you'll have fun at the cast and crew screening, Tiff!
Call me if you're seriously thinking about going to Inishmore Sunday. If we're both going to be there, we might as well try to get seats together. I'll be so sad to see Domhnall go!
Snakes give me the creeps too, but I really am looking forward to this. I don't know why I've joined the bandwagon in SoaP mania. I'm sure it'll just end up being bad bad and not fun/campy bad.
Enjoy your week off, Claire! Are you planning on Netflixing your movies or is there anthing else coming out in the theaters that you're going to try to catch on your week off? I finally saw An Inconvenient Truth on Tuesday, after a couple of botched attempts. It was good...depressing, but good. I have very little faith that we'll get our acts together to change things). Bleak, bleak, bleak.
And Pat, I saw Scoop a couple weeks ago. I was actually pretty disappointed. I didn't hate it as much as the friend I went with, but I didn't buy Scarlett in the role at all. I didn't see any reason why Hugh's character would spend more than a day flittering around with Scarlett. They had her in the frumpiest clothes and her neurotic Allen-esque schtick certainly wouldn't have won him over, I wouldn't think. I think her sizable rack would have only gotten them as far as a one night stand...that's about it. I know it's supposed to be a silly comedy and I'm way over-analyzing here, but it just didn't cut it...Most people on BWW seemed to love it, but it was just kind of eh for me. Definitely liked Match Point more.
Interesting mabs. I actually felt like the response to Scoop was "mixed" at best. I didn't read a much of the thread on BWW but it seemed like the general consensus was that it was weak.
I think the fact that they had her in frumpy clothes and had her acting all goofy/neurotic was a very calculated character choice actually. The style of dress I thought was key to make her seem like a "real woman". Anji actually really liked her based on the way she was dressed because she didn't seem fake. She seemed like someone you might actually see walking down the street in Brooklyn. I think the fact that Hugh Jackman's character mentioned that his mother was beautiful and unfaithful was pretty telling as to why he'd be with someone so plain (well, as plain as Scarlett can possibly be). I don't want to ruin the ending, but I think given all of the "complexity" that had been going on in his life he viewed Jade as someone who was a safe, faithful and unpredictable in a controllable way.
Maybe I was reading too much into minor dialogue points to try and fill in holes but it just worked for me and Woody Allen hasn't really worked for me in the past though it's likely time to give him another try.
I liked Match Point quite a bit myself, but comparing these two movies as anything other than polar opposites is tough to do.
I think Scoop got pretty mixed to negative reviews from the critics, but from what I recall, I thought most people here seemed to like it a lot. And while I get what you're saying re: Scarlett and her "frumpiness" (and I agree, can Scarlett ever be truly frumpy...I think not), I just think trying to pass her off as a regular gal on the street would have been more refreshing for another part/movie. Trust me, as a bit of a bespectacled frump myself, I'm all about having the non-glamourous on screen...eh, it just seemed like a stretch here, to me (and I find it hard to believe that anyone would find an American accent sexy, as Lyman supposedly did! ).
Mabs, you just don't think American accents are sexy because you're American and they're normal for you. :-P
I haven't seen Scoop and I'll probably NetFlix it because I am interested even though it didn't get great reviews. I might actually like it because my expectations are low now!
I just got back from seeing Little Miss Sunshine for a second time. It wasn't quite as funny as the first time, but it was still fantastic.
I'm now almost positive I'll go see Inishmore on Sunday. When do you think is a good time to get there, Nic?
I know, re: the accent...but really! I love my homeland, but a Boston accent?!? Ah boy's wicked smaht! Sexy, sexy!
My mom and I are going to see Little Miss Sunshine today...I think. We were going to go tomorrow between getting tix and the show, but long story short, the people at the credit union gave her movie passes for the wrong theatre even though she asked for AMC and we refuse to pay $11!
And as far as Sunday, I think 11:30 should be fine. I haven't seen any threads or anything about them leaving and when I went on a Sunday a few weeks ago, the mezz was about 2/3 empty (and I think they just sell whatever's left in the mezz, not a limited number).
