"7. Will I see you in NY in December???
Yes! I'll definitely be around, so hopefully you're not too busy and we'll actually get to meet!"
Oh. Well, I guess I just see what I wanna see, huh? Hee.
Argh, time for dinner out, ladies! We shall discuss more later!
Well, Tiff, you never know what'll be happening by next year. It'd be glorious if I could get this gig and perhaps finangle some sort of trip out of it. Can you imagine how fun that would be if by some stroke of luck something would work out timing-wise/financially?!?! (HAHA! Yeah right! Like that would ever happen.)
Enjoy dinner...ttyl, Tiff!
Bye Tiff, have a nice dinner! A question for when you return: where are you planning on going in Asia next summer?
I'm going to start in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, then go down to Singapore, Bali, Borobudur, and then go back to KL (for my Dad's 50th birthday), then up to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, and from there either go back to Malaysia or fly up to Mainland China and HK - and in a perfect world, there would be a side trip to Japan and/or India somewhere in there.
Geez! How long are you going for? Sounds like a very busy (albeit exciting) trip!
Speaking of trips. There's a chance that I get my paws on a free roundtrip plane ticket (and there's a slim chance that it may be good for both the US and Canada). My friend's flight yesterday got bumped twice, so they gave her two free roundtrip tix, and she mentioned that I could have one. I guess yesterday they said they were good for the entire US and Canada, but this morning they said it was just for the continental US. Anyway, perhaps if I indeed get it and it's good for Canada too, I'll finally get my ass up to Vancouver!
Nothing else new here. It's been really rainy lately.
Oh, Claire, did you start classes yet? Have you had your children's lit class?
Who the hell cares?? Fly to Seattle and take the 2 hour comfy bus ride to Vancouver!!!
Well, I could totally do that too...assuming I get my grubby little hands on one of those tickets!
how did you score such a sweet deal anyway? Is your friend following through?
On a business trip, Monday, my friend got bumped from her flight, twice. She said she was so fed up with US Air, that she'd rather give away her free flights than fly with them again.
While she was there, she was talking to a fellow bumper(er..bumped??) and he was saying that someone he knew (either his younger brother or just a friend, I don't remember) would, when he had nothing better to do and a few extra bucks to buy one flight, find a city that had bad weather reported for the day, buy one flight there, and allow himself to get bumped (and somehow make the rounds, doing it several times) and just rack up 6 or 7 free flights. Kind of clever, if you're willing to gamble that the flight will be cancelled and you'll get bumped!
Wow, that's an interesting idea! I'm not sure that I'd be willing to risk it, but I suppose it could pay off.
Anyone else here hit by Ernesto? My classes were cancelled on Friday and power was out for much of the weekend. My roommates and I just hung out and relaxed, and now (on Sunday night) I realize that I haven't really gotten much homework done. Whoops. So I have to do a bunch of reading tonight for tomorrow's classes, and then tomorrow I have to spend my birthday getting ready for the rest of the week. I'm such a procrastinator. Ugh.
...Sweeney Todd is closing...
*gets out the rope*
jay kay (sorta)
You're a Virgo, huh?
Nope, not his by Ernesto here - if only. We've actually been going through a drought and in fact one of the towns on Vancouver Island has had to shut down entirely because their reservoir is out of water. Actually out of water. Hotels have to close, businesses and restaurants, too...isn't that crazy?
(I SWEAR not all of Canada is like this. If there's one thing we've got in abundance, it's water! If there's a second thing we've got in abundance, though, it's inept governing!)
Oh, wow. You could definitely have some of our water; we've got the opposite problem (flooding).
Yep, I'm a Virgo to the bone.
Nic went to Sweeney's closing today, and DRS (unless she managed to sell the DRS ticket and get one to Inishmore instead). What a sad day! Sweeney and Inishmore, the two best shows on Broadway, closing on the same day.
nuh-uh! There's still The History Boys!!!
Sorry, but I think Sweeney and Inishmore are both superior to The History Boys.
let's not get into this argument.
I'm not a u2 fan, you're not a history boys fan.
let'sagree to disagree.
Fair enough.
I don't dislike The History Boys, though; it is a good show, I just think it's slightly overrated.
Same about U2, I guess, for me.
in a related story...
when will company tickets go on sale!!??
Good question! Broadway.com just says "on sale soon." I have no idea what "soon" means. Do you know if they'll have some sort of rush?
Company better have some rush (or at least a couple rows of "cheap seats" a la Sweeney)! There are so damn many shows opening this fall. There's no way I'm going to be able to afford keeping up with them all.
Anyway, back from my day of closings. I ended up going to Scoundrels and Sweeney. I came *this close* to thinking I'd get a "reprieve" and sneak into Inishmore at the last gunfire (literally! I was looking at an apartment in Brooklyn and found out I might have a taker, but I didn't get back to the Lyceum until almost 2:30), but it didn't happen. I didn't feel too terrible, because they were SOLD OUT! Hoorah! I was so sad thinking about the reports that would be coming back from people tonight and tomorrow saying there were only 20 people in the mezz, like Domhnall and David's last. Don't get me wrong, I think we had a hell of a great audience that afternoon, but it's nice to have them go out on such a high note.
Scoundrels was fun. I still would have much rather been at Inishmore, but I did have a good time. Brian was funny, but he was really just copying Norbert. He had the same vocal inflections and there were lines that just screamed Norbert (like he'd watched the show with Norbie a bunch of times and just "stole" stuff). It wasn't necessarily a bad thing, because he did it well and it was still very funny. I just think that Brian is a great actor and it would have been nice to see him really make the role his own (though, considering he was there for such a short time, it's not entirely surprising that he didn't).
Keith Carradine was fine. No Lithgow, and (though I didn't see him, but from the reports I read) certainly no Jonathan Price. A friend I was with said he seemed like he was giving an understudy performance, and I think I agree. It was good, but just didn't have any "star quality."
Richard Kind was pretty bad. TOTALLY miscast, imho. I think he was just way too schleppy to play Andre. I really didn't get all the hooplah about Greg Jbara (with the Jbara love thread that's on part 8 or something crazy now) but I REALLY missed him this afternoon.
Lucie Arnez was fine. She'd just had knee surgery, so they had her understudy come out to do the dancing in Like Ziz/Zat (whatever the hell the name of that song is), and they made it into a really funny and totally unique live theatre moment.
Sherie and Sara Gettelfinger were both still great (though Sara seemed to be totally winded by the end of Oklahoma?...There was a speech from a producer at the end, and they brought out Yazbeck, Jack O'Brien and Jerry Mitchell (oh, and then all the crew, and one of the dressers was a dresser at Ui!)
Sweeney was excellent. GREAT audience. They were so enthusiastic and appricative of the show, without being obnoxious. I've been to lasts where people are just excessive about spontaneous applause and stuff...It was great at the very top of the show, as soon as the house lights went down, there was thunderous applause that went on for quite some time. The curtain...or whatever you'd call what they have for a "curtain" went up and the cast just stood there, totally still. Continuous applause, and then, everyone just stopped. It was amazing. It was like everyone was on the same page. There was no slow winding down. There was no signal from a cast member that we really needed to stop so they could get going. I doubt other people really noticed it or thought twice about it, but there was something about it that was just electrifying.
We had seats in the last row of the center mezz. Two of my friends were in the same row on the opposide aisle(we didn't buy our tix together for this) and another friend was in row E of the orchestra. Believe it or not, there were three empty seats next to her, so we all got to go sit there for Act II!!! I've only been in the orchestra for that show once, and even that was way in the back. It was really something to be able to see everyone's faces (especially at this particular show).
Sondheim was there and there were a bunch of total loonies who were FREAKING out. I had a great vantage point in the mezz for the pre-show goings on. I saw a couple people pointing (and crying...there may have been some hyperventillating in there too!).
Great long standing O at the end (before the lights even came up for curtain call, and a really nice speech from Michael (and a brief, tear-filled speech from Patti). Someone across the aisle from up threw a TON of roses up on stage. I'd really be curious how many dozens of roses were thrown. It was kind of a beautiful moment though, watching the flowers flying up on the stage, rather than having someone in the front row handing Patti a bouquet. They ended up passing them all around.
Pat, I looked for you at intermission, but I didn't really see you. I saw Clay, but he was across the orchestra, and I had a hard enough time getting through the mobs to get to our seats, so I didn't bother going over since I didn't really see you. Clay, if you read this, did Micheal point at you during the "You sir" bit during Epiphany? It looked like it from the mezz!!! How cool!!
Aaaaanyway...it's going on 2:30, and this is far too long. If anyone actually reads it all...gold star for you!
As Davey says at the end of Act One at Inishmore:
Nighty night! (Though, like Davey, my head will not be set for 9am, I can tell you that right now!) Thank god tomorrow, er today, is a holiday!
OH MAN!
I wish i was at Sweeney's last.... *sigh*
Thanks for the report, Nic! Sweeney seemed to be really special; it's really cool that you got to go.
ETA: It was 7 dozen roses.

SEVEN DOZEN!?!?! Obviously, I haven't had a chance to read any of the Sweeney thread on the main board!
Anyway, it really was special...my friend told me she wore some new boots to the show, and I really can't wait to hear, er, see them when she visits again in October. Maybe I'll get my own copy, er, pair.
haha, I was so confused the first time I read that.
I may have to ask you to get me a pair of those boots, too, if they're really nice ones.
A nice pair of boots are really surprisingly hard to come by, so I'll be sure to keep you posted if they're as good as I'm led to believe.
