I've been drooling for the new David Lynch film for months now. Is anyone else having problems waiting to see it? I CANNOT wait.

I've seen it, Cruel. It's playing exclusively at one theatre here in Manhattan. From what I've read, the DVD release is planned for June. I really loved it. But then, I'm a big Lynch fan. I know you are, as well, but if you're not, I wouldn't bother. It's long and very out there; even for Lynch. But if you're a real fan you'll eat it up. And if you don't get the chance to see it in a theatre, not to worry. It's one film that might actually play even better on the small screen.
Saw it at NYFF---incredible film. There was an interesting talkback afterwards with Lynch, Dern and Theroux.

I am NOT a Lynch fan, but since we actually live in the 'Inland Empire,' I'm probably going to have to try and see this. I have a feeling the fast-forward button is going to come in handy

Nothing, Cruel - just not my thing. I'm too linear (I know, how boring )
Although, I have to admit that I did actually like BLUE VELVET.

I saw it, and was very disappointed. It starts well, but it is just plain too damn long. There's a lot of the same type of identity games that characterized MULHOLLAND DRIVE, that a lot of people found fascinating but that just bored the hell out of me. I'm sure there's a lot going on that would make more sense on repeat viewings, but I wasn't taken enough with the film to really want to go too far out of my way to sit through it again anytime soon.
I say this as someone who has been an admirer of Lynch's for more than 20 years, through a lot of ups (BLUE VELVET) and downs (the bizarrely over-rated MULHOLLAND DRIVE).
I did like the rabbits. Check out my blog for my review of the film.

I thought Mulholland Dr. was a lot better than Blue Velvet. Why do you think it's overrated?

MD is awesome, though TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME and WILD AT HEART are personal favorites.
Now cry.
MULHOLLAND DRIVE was a nice film - but so pretentious that I almost vomited.
I skipped INLAND. I'll possibly see the DVD, though Lynch typically leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
He's one of those directors that people praise because he's different.
Different doesn't always equal brilliant - hate to tell you, Cruel.

Mleh. Don't use the word "pretentious" to describe art. It's not koo.
Lynch isn't praised because he's different. He's praised because he's awesome.
If any other name than David Lynch was attached to this endless piece of wankery, it would be booed out of the theater. A mess.
I can be as pretentious as the next guy, but MD's pretentiousness made me almost angry.
If you found Mulholland Drive pretentious, do yourself a favor and stay far away from Inland Empire. It expands on the same theme and even gives a winking nod to MD. I, on the other hand, ate up every second of it's 172 minutes. I'm hoping Lynch will release the 197 minute version on DVD.
Mulholland Drive is pretentious? Please explain.
As far as I am concerned - a person who has seen this movie many times, and analyzed it to death - it's expertly crafted, and makes brilliant use of symbolism, exposition, and narrative.
The movie DOES make sense, believe it or not. I say this not to sound more "intelligent" than you, but to open you to the possibility that there is more to the film than you may think.

Agreed, broadway86. Same with Inland Empire. Although it takes even more time and patience (at least for me) to piece it all together. At the Manhattan theatre where I saw it, if you paid to see it 9 times, the 10th time was free. That's how many times you might have to sit through it to be able to figure it all out. As for me, I'm eagerly awaiting the DVD release to enjoy repeated viewings at my leisure.
By the way, here's an excellent website for anyone interested in an in-depth analysis of Mulholland Dr. There are several, but in my opinion, this one's the best. I'm sure that similar websites exist for Inland Empire. If anyone knows of one, please post.

I usually love movies where you have to watch it a few times to piece everything together; give me a movie where you have to think anyday. I just didn't like MD at all.
Granted, I've only seen it once. And that was 4 or so years ago when I was 13 or 14, and it was late at night. To be fair, I might give it another chance.

13 or 14? Late at night? No wonder you didn't like it!
But, seriously, I would definitely suggest a second viewing. Your opinion might not change, but you never know. I hated it the first time, too.

Anyone want to discuss their interpretation of this film over PM?

God, this was such an incredible film. It keeps playing in my mind over and over. If any of you have the chance to see it, please take advantage of it.
- This is a movie that takes you into another world. Only a few directors can competently do this and David Lynch succeeds only as David Lynch can. He sticks you inside his head for three hours and it's a wonderful place to be.
- Digital video is perfect for Lynch and I'm glad he's using it. DV gives off an extremely dreamy quality that constantly calls attention to itself. It eases you into his world.
- Laura Dern is the greatest actress alive! Okay, Meryl Streep is still alive but Laura Dern is pretty damn close...
- Harry Dean Stanton rules ("I know. I've got a lot of nerve...")
- This is one of the few three-hour films I could watch over and over again
- Love the references to Bergman
- The scenes in Poland are amazing
- Best ending credits sequence ever
DEAR GOD, I LOVED THIS MOVIE!!!!!
Just came across this. Thought it might be of interest to all of you Lynch fans out there. (Especially, Cruel)
Can. Not. Wait.
