I get it now!!! That earthquake we felt yesterday in Hollywood was Lewis Carroll rolling over in his grave.
I would love to see Burton drag out old character actors he has worked with before. Catherine O'Hara, Paul Reubens, Jeffrey Jones, Michael Gough,Martin Landeau, Even Michael Keaton.

Yes! Finally! They reunite after a long absence!
Cate Blanchett would be great as the Queen of Hearts. I like the idea someone had earlier of casting all of the character actors he's used in the past.

It seems like Burton stops working with actors once they have a huge scandal hit them (Jeffrey Jones and pedophilia, Paul Reubens and public lewdness/pedophilia, etc.). Do you think if Depp were to be arrested for treason or something, Burton would stop working with him?
Paul Reubens had a cameo in BATMAN RETURNS as the Penguin's father, and was Lock in THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS -- both after the adult theater scandal.
"Why does Tim think everyone wants to see Depp in all his films?"
It doesn't bother me. :) I think they make a great team.
I still say Dianne Wiest for the Queen!
And to follow coincidental pairing, John Lithgow would be great as the caterpillar.
I could also see Ellen DeGenners as the voice of Dodo. Very Dori-ish
Julie Walters would be great as the Dutchess ...or even the Queen of Hearts.
I vote for Robbie Coltrane and John Goodman for Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum
How about Alan Cumming for the White Rabbit?

A score of big names for minor (even if iconic) roles just reeks too much of big-ass mini-series to me then darker and interesting/couriouser movie adaption.
Burton would be best to limit the amount of big names for those minor iconic roles.
The beginning of Svankmeijer's ALICE
Casting News: Another Fairy Tale for Hathaway and Carter

Alice's strange adventure is getting a little more crowded. Two weeks ago, Walt Disney Studios announced, to no one's surprise, that Johnny Depp had signed on to play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's live-action/stop-motion hybrid reimagining of "Alice in Wonderland." Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Anne Hathaway and Burton's wife, Helena Bonham Carter, will also be greeting Alice after she falls down the rabbit hole.
Hathaway, currently enjoying raves for her performance in the indie drama "Rachel Getting Married," will play the White Queen. Unlike other adaptations of Lewis Carroll's classic tale, this version will stick to the original story, with Hathaway's character instructing Alice (Mia Wasikowska of "In Treatment") to catch the creature known as the Bandersnatch. In other "we could have guessed this months ago" news, Carter is on board as the viciously evil Red Queen, who has a compulsive habit of uttering the famous line, "Off with their heads!"
The project is a return home of sorts for Hathaway, as the 25-year-old actress first came to prominence in Disney's "The Princess Diaries." While "Rachel Getting Married" is expanding to theaters across the country, Hathaway's next release is the long-delayed supernatural thriller "Passengers," later this month.
As for Carter, this is her -- wait for it -- sixth collaboration with Burton, following last year's "Sweeney Todd," "Corpse Bride," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Big Fish" and "Planet of the Apes." The Hitlist is a huge fan of Carter, but would love to see her work with another filmmaker once in a while.
"Alice in Wonderland" is expected to begin production soon in anticipation of a 2010 release.

Told ya Carter would be playing that role!!!
Thanks for posting this Zepka102. Saw this earlier and meant to post it myself. This sounds like its going to be a really cool film!
I'm actually really excited for this. I adore Johnny Depp, he's been in so many of Tim Burton's films but I think he's great in all of them.
I'm loving that Anne Hathaway is going to be in this as well!
Johnny Depp was 'chosen?' More like requested.
going to be interesting.

Okay, either this MSN reporter is clueless about the books by Lewis Carroll, or they AREN'T sticking to the original story of "Alice In Wonderland" at all! The Red Queen and White Queen are characters in the SECOND book, "Through the Looking Glass." And the Red Queen doesn't "utter" the famous line, "Off with their heads!" That would be the Queen of Hearts, from the first book. The Red Queen and White Queen are chess pieces, not playing cards. Wrong book, wrong quote.
I know this is a fluff piece announcing casting for a Hollywood movie, but this is MSN, a "reputable" news source... and their basic fact-checking sucks here.
best12 - you beat me to that one - The Red Queen and Queen of Hearts are not at all the same.
I do wonder based on this faulty news if Burton's planning on mashing both books together. I would guess he'll have to if he's including the white queen (who is always going to be Carol Channing to me...)
Steve Coogan should have been the Mad Hatter.
The Disney movie was based on the combined books ("Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass"), known as "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."
But the stories are two separate adventures.
My fellas father has a small role in this film lol

Here's the link to the interactive production art. The tweedles are freaking me out.
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum remind me of Pugsley from the Addams family. This looks interesting and I am looking forward to seeing it when it comes out to see how Burton handles the story.
I hear early when production began that it was going to have songs in it written by Danny Elfman but I am no longer hearing that. Can anyone confirm that? Looks like a lot of pot will be required before going to the movie for this one!
