What a ridiculously unneeded, lazy and boring film this was. I haven't been shy in saying I haven't been too excited for this but I went opening day today because the franchise is my alltime favorite and I did hope for the best going in.

There are just so many problems with this film my mind can't even comprehend where to begin. The only thing I can't find fault with is the cast (minus Haley who did nothing for me as Freddy). There isn't one moment of genuine suspense and not one scare that you can't count down to (3-2-1 JUMP!!), they were so predictable. A lot of scenes elicited laughter from the audience, not because they were funny but because we've seen them before! Nancy is in the tub with her legs spread open. Duh. The claw is coming out but she'll wake up. There were just too many scenes here that we had seen before to make them interesting, let alone scary. Certain character names were changed but that didn't mean they weren't still the same people as in the original, dying in almost the same way.

It's time for these remakes to stop now. Out of all of them, there's only been one that has (to me at least) improved on the original and created a really great film and that was TEXAS CHAINSAW. Every other one has been a joke and torn apart by critics and audiences as well. What are these producers thinking at this point? They know how heavily scrutinized they're going to be by the public for taking an icon (which Freddy is) and re-imagining him. He doesn't need it. Freddy isn't like Michael or Jason, a silent killer who stalks and slices. He's a real character and if you change that too much you change the entire reason people love the films.

I saw the original NIGHTMARE in 1985 when I was 7 and it's been something I watch all the time ever since. I need to watch it again right now and wipe this piece of garbage out of my mind.

* out of **** stars and that's only because I want to do Thomas Dekker.

Oh wow. After seeing those pics I have no interest in him anymore. LOL

I Just found this film to be one of the most boring movies I've sat through in a while. I found myself thinking about what I needed to get done around the house tomorrow and making a shopping list in my head.

The dream sequences in an ELM STREET movie have endless possibilities and they were wasted here with the same settings we'd seen in other films and not an ounce of originality. What was the point of this movie?

I read some spoilers and am wondering what do you think about what they did to Freddy's whole origin ie why the adults killed him? That sounded like a real buzzkill.

I still want to see it and decide for myself. But, I'm almost more excited about The Human Centipede, which I'm seeing next week. Can't wait.

The whole thing with the origin of Freddy just didn't work here. In the series before it's been gone into and discussed but this just took it to another level which made him just "gross". And I know we're talking about a killer here but you want to look forward to seeing Freddy on screen and not just think he's a nasty baby f*cker.

I remember Thomas Decker from the Honey We Shrunk the Kids tv show. Some days I still can't believe that little kid grew up to look like that!

I think the new Freddy looks a little familiar

Altogether now: CG effects are not scary.

"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Borstal, what I found amazing was that the effects in the original were more realistic looking than in this CGI remake! In 1984, Freddy coming through Nancy's wall was terrifying! No it just looked like a cartoon Voldemort.

CG effects are not scary!

Really.

Everyone is bringing their own baggage to this remake b/c Freddy is so iconic.
My perspective has always been that I like Freddy for the humor and of course the concept, but having never seen one of the Nightmares in theaters my emotional connection isn't as significant as others on here.

I went in with super low expectations.

Super low expectations were met. It was an altogether joyless and cliche movie. The CG was horrible but the new backstory/motivation was certainly more depraved. The one impression I got was that it was completely unmemorable.

It didn't have to be scary (it wasn't), gory (it wasn't), or even polished (it was, tech wise). It just had to be entertaining on its own terms.
Sadly, it was (wait for it)...boring.

I give it 2.5 out if 5 yawns.

Thomas Dekker is yummy! He was the main reason I even bothered with the Terminator tv show. He didn't have enough screen time though.

A final thought on remakes - I'm not altogether opposed to
re-imaginings as a rule. As Jordan said TCM and even Friday the 13th were pretty good. And I even liked the controversial Halloween remake (not part 2, that was just apalling).
But they worked b/c the boogey men didn't really have personalities. Those movies just upped the gore and boiled the genre down to pretty people being butchered. Which is exactly what you expect. They weren't classic, but they didn't change the recipe either.

Well, at least this one wasn't as bad as say, The Hitcher or The Amytiville Horror. That's something, right?

GOOD NEWS for TheatreFan4 - It is estimated to gross $35 million, so you'll probably get a sequel (and I bet it will be in 3-D).

"In 1984, Freddy coming through Nancy's wall was terrifying!"

You know they did that simply with a spandex wall? No animation, no nothing. Just a wall made of spandex.

Less $$ = More innovation

I still have my 3D glasses from FREDDY'S DEAD with advertising for HOUSE PARTY on the inside, so if it does happen I'll wear those.

But I'm glad you found it boring as well. A big part of that was due to the fact that there weren't that many killings in this and when they happened they were quick and "joyless" on Freddy's part.

Oh, and *SPOILER* HOW IN THE HELL did that guy at the end survive being sliced by Freddy and than stabbed in the chest by the claw? He was still alive and able to wake Nancy up? I know you're supposed to suspend belief for these movies, but COME ON!

It probably will be 3D. They tried to post-production 3D render this one, Samuel Bayer told them no way. Since chances he won't be back and/or 3D rendering will be in the contract the new director signs then we'll be seeing it in the next film.

Iron Man 2 is opening the following weekend but I think the film could still stay steady because of how big IM2 weekend is expected to be. You also have Robin Hood the following week (though I do not know what the box office expectations are with that film. Russell and Ridley have had clunkers together before.).

Horror film usually drop at least 60% in the second week. This one may have some stronger legs based on the popularity of the franchise which would result in a possible 50% drop, just as TheaterFan4 predicts.

Either way, with a strong opening weekend a sequel is pretty much assured.

Nightmare won't drop like a lead balloon because of Iron Man, but because it's a horror movie. Almost all horror movies have a BIG second week drop off.
