Stockard, I did. All the kids at school were talking about Freddy and if you remember those days he was an instant cultural phenomenon. My next door neighbor (an amazing woman who lived with her 20 something year old daughter) used to babysit me and they rented it right when it came out on video. I was a movie buff even at that age and I BEGGED my parents to let me see it. My Mom says that she didn't see the harm in it (thanks Mom) but my Dad took me aside and put ketchup on his face and said that blood in the movies is just like ketchup, all fake.

I really credit him for my never being scared by horror films and my love for them at such an early age. But I also know that I'm in the minority and that te average 7 year old would "never sleep again" after seeing something like that.

I remember having nightmares after seeing Little Monsters when I was five. I can't even imagine watching Nightmare on Elm Street at seven. I would have been traumatized.

I saw it today. Very predictible and a real waste of time. I'm glad I went to the matinee and only paid $6. I saw the original in the theatre in 1984 and it scared the crap out of me. They just don't make horror movies like they used to.

It didn't do as well as some experts had predicted, but regardless it's a huge opening.

Is that the real house or just one that looks like it?

I didn't hate this remake - that doesn't mean it's ever going to be mentioned in the same breath as the original, of course.

But as just another Freddy movie, I didn't hate it, although I agree it didn't have any build or any real sense of dread.

I think it's the actual house. Elm Street was filmed in LA.

Im with you Jordan! I despised this film. It was so boring and lame. One question I had was if someone who had never seen the original and was unfamiliar with the franchise watched the film would it really be linear and make sense. I got the sense that I was filling in the gaps with what I knew already.

The original was not only a horror film, it was a mystery with a suspenseful narrative. I also had to watch the original to get that trash out of my mind. :)

I know someone who never saw the original, say that they were completely freaked out by this remake. So....no clue!

I saw the original on opening night when I was a teen and it scared the hell out of me. And it remains my all-time favorite horror film. No other film in the franchise came close (I enjoy the second because I had a crush on the kid) and I gave up on them altogether after Freddie was basically turned into a clown and there was nothing unique, scary or fun about the films. After reading reports if this remake, I'll skip it and just buy the original on Blu-Ray.

I was 13 or 14 when a group of us went to watch the original and i was terrified. it was the whole story behind Freddy too. It bothered me. We went to all of the sequels too. 7? I could not imagine it at 7, nor would I let my kid see it at 7, but my nephew used to watch movies like this at a young age.
I want to see it for notstalgia sake but not sure if I will.

Thanks for the review.

I liked the original but loved 3 Dream Warriors! Will not waste my time on this remake. The original was just fine!
None, I mean NONE of the horror remakes I have seen have ever come up to the standards of the originals.

Haven't seen the remake yet, but these are my favorites IN ORDER:

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Dream Warriors
New Nightmare
The Dream Master
Freddy vs. Jason (it's just too fun)
The Dream Child
Freddy's Revenge
Feddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare

I agree with whoever said that TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE was the only remake that came close to the original. The original version was raw but the remake was scarier (IMHO)

I have not seen any of the recent remakes with exception to Zombie's Halloween (had low expectations despite liking his previous films. It was okay but nothing on the original.) and Zack Snyder's Dawn of The Dead (a bit gratuitous and quite different from the original's message imo but decent on its own merit). The only remake of a horror film I can say was better than the original was John Carpenter's The Thing. Worst horror remake for me was Gus van Sant's Psycho. The movie in a nutshell: The scene where Vince Vaughn's Norman checks out Anne Heche's Marion through the peep hole. Yikes.

I heard there was going to be a remake of Suspiria (never saw the original in its entirety but heard nothing but good things about it) and an Americanized version of Let The Right One In that says it will follow the source material more than its Swedish counterpart though is omitting a major feature of the film's protagonist to be more appealing to audiences. So let's forget the classics being remade, even the new ones are not safe. Especially if they **gasp** have subtitles.

The only good I can see from this is if people get inspired to check out the original.

I think someone all ready mentioned this, but I would also like to add "The Crazies" to the list of movies better than the original

I'd be actually be interested to see what a good director could do with SUSPERIA. The movie is so incredibly dated and I know a lot of people consider it to be the greatest horror film ever made but Ive always found it to be boring but with an interesting story. So yeah, I'd go see s remake even if it starred Sarah Michele Gellar.

And as for THE CRAZIES, I loved it but is that really a horror film?

I would say yes since it has the horror movie building frame with Zombies that aren't really zombies. I think if "Night of the the Living Dead" could be considered horror, then this could too.

I agree that it was a brilliant suspense film. I just think it has enough elements to be considered "horror" but it's not straight horror.

David Gordon Green, who somehow directed both George Washington and The Pineapple Express, is attached to supposed Suspiria remake though there are no actors attached- though I did once see Natalie Portman attached to one of the leading roles. I am a bit skeptical though Green seemed to transition from indie drama to comedy pretty well. Last check shooting begins this year- once they find a cast, of course.

Portman seems like a solid lead for this and makes me have hopes it won't be another lifeless remake.
