You're acting like I want you to be wrong.
You always get so uppity when someone disagrees with you. I was just saying that I don't agree. Chill.
"You always get so uppity when someone disagrees with you. I was just saying that I don't agree. Chill. "
No you didn't--you said I was finding coincidences--which they aren't--a coincidence is a accident--my (however valid) examples are not coincidences.
You don't have to agree, but you shouldn't misinterpret what I said.
Second, you said ANY character from any movie could be characterized as gay, which is an overstatement at best, intended to negate my theory.
And of course you want me to be wrong--that makes you right.
And if all that isn't what you meant, then please let us all know.
I can definitly see Damon's character as being possibly closeted. But that might have just been the actor's "secret" and has nothing to do with the story.
Departed should net Marty the best director oscar, although he should have won it for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. It is not however the best picture of the year......of the ones nominated, Little Miss Sunshine deserves the little gold man, easily.
I was a LMS man all the way too, until I saw Departed--I guess I was really expecting a second-rate film and got a happy surprise.
I don't think his "gayness" has anything to do with the story--just an intersting little side note. Reminded me of TOUCH OF EVIL kinda, when Menzies kills Quinlan....
I just think that with Marty, Pedro, and some others, I try to keep in mind what big old Hollywood fans they are, and often look for homage.
I can definitly see where you are drawing his character being gay from though lil, it would make sense. I loved The Departed, don't get me wrong. I watched it twice in one day when I rented the dvd and have seen it twice since. But to me it was like when Chicago beat The Pianist for best picture. Sure Chicago was good but The Pianist weighed more. Little Miss just had a slight IT factor over Departed, in my eyes, that I just can't explain I guess.
You don't have to try to explain not being into CHICAGO--geez! I hated that one!
I don't know that I'm right about the gay thing, but I didn't just pull it out of my a$$--he he....
And the story of LMS THE MOVIE SUCCESS is just as good as the film itself--same with the "story" of Jennifer Hudson...it goes way back--probably to Harold Russell for BEST YEARS...
Oh I didn't hate Chicago by any means. I just thought as a film, The Pianist was far superior.
I would go Departed over LMS any day. LMS was cute, refreshing and nice and all but I didn't think it was "best pictuure" material at any rate. DEPARTED, maybe. I just don't think this was a strong film year in general.
"I just don't think this was a strong film year in general."
Then you didn't see enough movies this year. There have been better years but this year by far was not the worst.
Id idn't say it was the worst. I just think there have definitely been better film years. Or maybe the Best Picture noms just don't reflect a really fantastic film year.
I think it's about the same, though it's been a LONG time since I was really wowed.
I think there's more to LMS than meets the eye--I think it's very well edited--the way the opening shots are linked through the various forms of addiction was particularly smart--and very well acted. It might not have the huge themes of WWII, international relations, the nature of good and evil, the monarcy and its place in contemporary society, but it is more than just a road movie.
Yes, there were definitely some very deep and human themes to LMS. But I just thought it was a little-above-average.
Watching Departed right, now by the way, lil, and I'm starting to think you're right. Damon's character was just called "prom queen." This is starting to seem more and more like a possibility to me.
Well, I was just making a theory--I am not 100% on that at all, it just seemed like he was the ONLY one they use those names on, but hey, this old lady has been wrong before!
Oh Mark Wahlberg how I love thee.
That will be all : )

i agree with sweetestsiren - i think it definetly deserves a nomination. i mean c'mon, with the crap out there now?
i think its the kind of movie that you have to see more than once bc the first time is kind of like a run by shooting
Just finished watching it ! Though I am not a big Scorcese fan, I have to say that I think it was an incredible film !!! Though I agree with those, who are wondering just why exactly, did Wahlberg get nominated ?
i think Wahlberg was nominated because his performance is almost the exact definition of a great supporting character... he adds so much to the film without the audience ever truly realizing it...
I thought he was funny, but nothing more. No, you don't need to weep and throw yourself off balconys to merit an Oscar nomination, but there are several other people that I would have nominated before Wahlberg. No substance to the performance, just sarcastic dialogue. Not too difficult, if you ask me.
I watched it earlier today, and thought it was great, but didn't like the last fifteen minutes. A lot of it was confusing, and the ending left a lot of things unclear. While that's not a bad thing, I would've liked for it to end with a little more information given.
I think it deserves a shot. Neither this or LMS had a lasting effect to me of being a great movie. I'm going to watch Babel later.
If LMS gets one, you cannot deny one for The Departed
Why is that?
LMS has a message. DEPARTED doesn't. I don't follow your train of thought.
Since when is every Oscar-nominated film required to have a message, though? Some will, and that's great, but possessing a strong message doesn't make a film great or well-made.
I don't htink it's true that The Departed doesn't have a message. It does, and it probably has more than one. It shows everyone that the lines between good and evil are very blurred, and that things are not for the most part what they seem. It also shows that not all people that do bad things do them out of their own will. it's a very human, very psychologically connectable film. I felt very...fluffy after I watched LMS.
I shouldn't use the tem "message," but I do think that the best films of the year should be TIMELY.
THE DEPARTED is just formulaic and standard in every way.
Funny--I thought pretty much the same thing about LMS. I thought that Departed had some at least semi-decent plot twists.
