The main problem I see with Lady Gaga is that she took all this time to reinvent herself for ARTPOP, but didn't take any time to reinvent her music.
Wait...what did she do to try and "reinvent herself"? Did it happen when I went to Valley Fair in Minneapolis because I admit I wasn't watching the news that day.
To be completely fair, Perry writes in collaboration with numerous people (Max Martin, Bonnie McKee, Dr. Luke, etc.) on nearly every track.
The day she goes from an album selling 1.1 million copies in its first week (thank you Amazon 99cents sales) to an album selling around 220k-260k in its first week. That's a MASSIVE fall. The only way to process that is to assume that she's lost some of her audience.
There is literally no way to tell what the BTW sales would have been without the Amazon sale, so there's that.
But to be honest, I'm not worried about charts. And I don't know why people who have admitted that they can't stand her are. It's so bizarre to me. Leave that noise to Interscope. If anything, they dropped the ball by barely marketing it. The important question is: is the music any good? I love it. As a fan who doesn't adore everything she does, I think it's her best work. Sales receipts are not going change that. And if you're disappointed in her album, listen to her older material, and maybe the next one will be more to your liking. It's very simple.

^ That can be said about hundreds of famous, well respected songwriters.
Katy Perry has written dozens of songs by herself. Sadly, only a few of them make the albums. Check out her first album, she is the sole writer on several tracks.
When she was on SNL it sounded like she was supposed to be singing along to a backing track that wasn't playing, because she sounded really quiet and also not very good, or at least not that loud shouty way she souinds on all her songs.
I totally agree. It was very odd sounding. Here she is singing a ballad totally live.

Again, not the strongest singer, but she is capable of singing live.

PLEASE do not try to compare "lady gaga" to Elton John. yes, he wore outrageous costumes in performance but that's where the similarity ends. He often (frequently, regularly, routinely) played and sang in a stripped -down manner that demonstrated his singing & songwriting skills- no gimmicks.
I think that is why he has been able to sustain a career for 40+ years.
This thread has become a Glee episode.

They should do a Lady Gaga episode of Glee! How cool would that be!? T be featured on Glee REALLY establishes you as an artist!
"I don't think anyone is denying that Gaga is very talented and riskier than Katy Perry."
I am! Well, no, I hadn't yet. But I would. I guess I just did.

But you're comparing them as songwriters. Gaga writes by herself, Perry works with a team. If you prefer the songs that Perry sings, that's cool. But to compare them in that respect is...

Katy Perry is riskier than Gaga?...... Okay :)

I really don't want to get into it with you, but every single song on ARTPOP has cowriters. So you are incorrect.

Yes, I have seen that page many times. And I mean, you can get into it with me. I'm not afraid of debate. She writes the melodies and lyrics herself, and she gives her producers credit as part of the songwriting team. It has worked that way since The Fame.

Well then she's surprisingly generous. Usually producers just get credited where they should be credited, as the producers of a track!
If they assist in composing the synth/instrumental tracks, or in arranging the song in any way, then technically, they helped write it. It's an unusual credit, I agree. Updated On: 11/19/13 at 03:10 PM
I think Gaga is very talented. I saw her tour earlier this year and while I didn't think "Born This Way" was her best effort, I think it had a lot of great songs and helped make the tour strong. I think "Artpop" is her best overall work since "The Fame." I think that it's a great overall album and can be listened from start to finish. I like overall more tame look - still avant-garde and unique but very clean and shows more of her actual face. I love the "Applause" video and I am happy we got out of the darker "Born This Way" days with weird eye makeup and prosthetic horns. She's still apparently releasing a jazz album produced by Tony Bennett, which I am very excited for.
In comparison, I found Katy's "Prism" bland. There were standout tracks ("Legendary Lovers," "Walking On Air," "Dark Horse") but overall most of it sounded the same. Her piano-only live performance of "By The Grace Of God" is incredible, but the album version is too manufactured and overproduced, especially for such a personal song. I think she is one of the prettiest women in Hollywood and is talented, but "Prism" had too much hype surrounding it.
Now, within a month, "Britney Jean" will be out. The hype is a little quieter for this one, since "Work Bitch" was not terribly successful, but still well-know and her newer single, the Sia-penned "Perfume" is finding its footing. Two other songs, "Passenger" and "Alien," have leaked and they are pretty good. They show a new side to Britney: one with a stronger vision, stronger material, and better vocals. There is lots of hype surrounding her "Piece of Me" show in Las Vegas, with live vocals and her most difficult dancing in years. As a huge Britney fan (I've seen her live three times) I have high hopes.
Also: Beyonce apparently is releasing "Grown Woman" and "Standing on the Sun" to radio, a method she used with "Single Ladies" and "If I Were A Boy." Both songs are great and I really hope we get new material from her sooner than later in 2014. I'm confused with Rihanna. "Unapologetic" had some of great stuff ("Mother Mary" is possibly her best song so far) but her singles (except for "Stay") have been average. And there's always poor Christina Aguilera. Thank goodness for "The Voice."
The pop music game is always evolving.
Lady Gaga = A circus act with a great voice who is wholly unoriginal.
Still not impressed.
She's predictably outrageous. Clearly it's served her well. But it's nothing new or interesting.

In another era (a couple years ago) talking about another pop person (Madonna), this is where somebody would pop in and say, "She has you all talking about her right now so ha ha she is a genius at marketing so she wins so I win because by pointing this out I am a winner by association!"
It all always comes back to Madonna doesn't it? Like the circle of life.
I think people are also acting like no performer has ever had an unsuccessful album. No, people didn't buy this album in massive amounts, but that doesn't mean Lady Gaga's career is over or that she's lost her audience. She was great on SNL, self-deprecating while managing to produce actual laughs, and she's an entertainer through and through. Perry doesn't really have that; she's certainly blossomed over the years, but one can't help but get the feeling she was thrown on that stage by a group of marketers who figured they could make money from a pretty, unaffected girl, no matter whether she could sing or not (she couldn't, she's gotten slightly better). I haven't bought either album, they don't interest me much, but I haven't given up on Gaga's music--and yes to the person Gaga needs to just do a stripped down album without the bells and whistles.

Correct. And for the love of... the album has been out for a week. haha
And if we really want to talk about these increasingly irrelevant charts, the truth is that Katy and Miley could only outsell Gaga when they are at their peak and she is at her weakest point thus far. I feel like some people on here are putting more thought and analysis into the sales more than Gaga...

Has a second single even been released?
Broadway Legend Joined: 7/22/03
NO singles have been released.
Applause was just a fizz single.
Whatever the next single was was just a fuzz single.
Whatever they're playing now in the clubs is just the club single.
The next single might not even be a single.
I haven't listened to the radio in a while, but "Do What U Want" is the official next single, with a video coming out soon.
^That is my favorite song on the album. I just wish she chose someone other than R. Kelly.
