It says, "I am my own demographic, what does that say about me?" about her.
I'm not a fan nor a hater. Just a casual listener.
And as someone who really doesn't care about sales figures or pointless prognostications regarding Gaga's popularity I very much enjoyed the cd.
To me it was just a fun cd chock full of hooks and some fun music. I don't pay too much attention to her antics other than laughing at her outre fashion get ups, I just like the music.
Hooks are the thing I think the album is sorely missing. Except for a few songs that I really like.
"Which would be fine — which would be awesome, even, in that daffy-bombastic Gaga-ian way — if the music was in place. It’s not. The album is stuffed-to-bursting with “tech”: blaring, banging state-of-the-art nü-disco dance-beats. But where are the tunes? From “Paparazzi” to “Bad Romance” to “The Edge of Glory,” Gaga's songs have thrived on hooks, on the big chorus that seals the deal. The only decent one I hear on ARTPOP is in “Applause,” and it’s definitely lesser Gaga."

Looking for strong hooks, I point you towards "Gypsy", "Sex Dreams", "G.U.Y", "Venus", "Do What U Want", "Aura", and "MANiCURE" in particular. There are others that take a little bit more time, but if you listen to these songs even twice, and still can't figure out the chorus... Updated On: 11/25/13 at 09:28 AM
Wow, I thought every song had a strong and sticky hook.
Maybe I liked it because I wasn't expecting anything other than some innocuous dance music.
Whatevs though, I enjoyed it and I'm glad I bought it.
I agree with you about "Gypsy", "Venus", "G.U.Y" and "Do What U Want". "Gypsy" has actually become one of my favorite Gaga songs. I also like "Mary Jane Holland". After several listens I find the rest of the album a skip. With some of it being downright unlistenable.
5 songs I enjoy off an album ain't bad though. It's just a disappointment to me after loving Born This Way so much.
And I give "Venus" extra credit just for the lyric "garden panty".
I agree, "Gypsy" is my favorite on the album. And there's a few songs I would rank up there with her strongest, "Gypsy" being chief among them. I adore "Mary Jane Holland" as well, the bridge is highly reminiscent of (dare I say it?) Queen.
Really, the only songs I don't care for are "Jewels", "Donatella" and "Fashion!". The latter two have grown on me somewhat, but...

I find this funny, Gaga's "flop" album still is this years top ranking female debut worldwide... Yet it's a flop? Hmm
Well nothing exists in a vacuum.
In context this album's sales figures are disappointing and it's staying power seems iffy.

Finish your thoughts so I can properly respond to them, please, instead of trailing off like this....

A catchy hook does not always make for a great song. Sure, it can get stuck in your head, but you can truly hate it for that very reason. It's Getting Hot in Here is an excellent example of that for me.

I don't think anyone said they couldn't figure out the chorus. I know I can figure out the chorus. That doesn't mean it's memorable after two listens. Or that I'll like it.

I agree with that.

Touché. I misunderstood the original point.

I think its being viewed as a flop because it was hyped so much. At the end of the day, its a decent pop album ( I really enjoy it) with fine sales. However, because so much is doled out upfront (studio costs, video production, wardrobe, press, marketing, performance costs) the record company is bleeding money with Gaga.
Her next album will be very different mind you (aka cheap and thoughtful) and will prob sell a million copies.

If she's smart that's what she'll do.

A clear eyed assessment of where Gaga is at.
^Did you forget the link Namo?
Her next album is an album of duets with Tony Bennett right?

Ha! I totally did. That's so Roxy!!

Yup.
That's what the 'sources' say.
An all duets album with Tony Bennett.
And i bet you it will outsell ARTPOP.
It can't do any worse than ArtPop, a drop of 81 percent in the second week in the states and the album has free fallen down the charts everywhere fast (and most countries failed to make it to number one). Mid week the UK is showing it has fallen out of the top 25.

Of course it could do worse. And might. Despite that, it could still be an excellent album. And if people say "Wow, what a great singer is" other people will say, "Madonna's not a great singer, and she'd be the first to admit that."
People will come back to this album and appreciate its strengths later.
I doubt the artificial flavor of Katy Perry's album of 326 cliches will stay with people 20 years from now.
People like Gaga and Lorde (and, yes, Miley) actually have authentic feelings and ideas that they want to express. It's kind of refreshing.
Agreed 100%. Once people get their own expectations out of the way, the album will be more highly-regarded. Updated On: 1/2/14 at 09:09 AM
